presentation of the F 900 R 2023

After eleven years, two evolutions(2012 - 2015) plus a slight update in 2017, the F 800 R has bowed out in favor of a bike eager to move upmarket. Still a mid-size roadster, still BM efficient, but clearly in a different league. Think not of a sequel, but of a new series with the F 900 R.

A revelation, a hunch, the end of a dispensation? The German roadster has abandoned some of its intrinsic solutions, which may have been what gave it its charm and/or identity. The F no longer has its drivetrain on the right, its pot on the left in the raised position, its filler hole next to the passenger seat and its fuel tank under the seat. Originality will have to be exercised in other ways.

The F 900 R also clearly marks its change of generation with a design that is closer to that of the R 1250 R. To reinforce its image, to show its growl, to show its teeth and shoulders. Without overstepping the bounds of Bavarian breeding.
Its muscular back accompanies its enterprising flanks. The lighthouse, rufian in good virtue, has all the makings of a Robocop mask. The overall lines are much more lively, and more apt to make trouble for the stars of the segment.
As for the powertrain, it too has reached a new level, almost a milestone.

BMW F 900 R 2023 - 1BMW F 900 R 2023 - 1

BMW F 900 Rin this category of wolves, several types of powertrain rub shoulders and challenge each other. 4-cylinder, V-twin, 3-cylinder... There was even a single-cylinder model at one time, the 690 Duke. The F 900 R remains faithful to the parallel twin, while forgetting the heart of its ancestor. BMW hasn't optimized the 798 cm3? No, the muscles have changed. The engine-makers borrowed the 850 GS block, added 21 cm3 to each bicep, stabilized the volume at 895 cm3 and extrapolated 105 hp at 8500 rpm. This represents a gain of 15 horsepower since the F 800, and 10 more than the trail bike with its 8.5. The gain in torque is more modest, but nonetheless present, rising from 8.8 to 9.4.

Simply increasing displacement would have been too simple. In Berlin (and Chongquin), we redesigned the cylinder heads, used forged instead of cast pistons, increased the compression ratio to 13.1:1, shifted the crankpins 90° (they weren't on the F 800), redesigned the exhaust and validated the switch to Euro5. The 6-speed gearbox is engaged via a new anti-drible clutch, softening the grip on the lever at the same time.
For young licence holders, a specific version with 95 hp in full will be available for A2s. But it won't be possible to upgrade to 105 horsepower.

With this mill and its updated performance figures, BMW has just overtaken Aprilia's 900 Shiver, and is now taking a closer look at the wattage of the MT-09, Street Triple, Z 900 and GSX-S 750. However, with less power than the hottest bikes, will this be a handicap? You'd think so, but the F 900 R has other strengths.

BMW F 900 Rstarting with its chassis, which it shares in large part with its XR sibling. This F has ditched the aluminum perimeter spars for a steel structure taken from the F 850 GS. A few strokes of the hammer and CAD adapt it to a sportier ride. The engine acts as a load-bearing element, while the 13-liter fuel tank is placed above it, in a new, welded plastic design. According to BM, this saves 60% weight. A good thing, since the roadster has put on weight this year.
At the front, we find a 43 mm inverted fork with 135 mm of travel; no adjustment required. The rear monoshock offers rebound and preload adjustment, as well as 142 mm of travel. These values have been significantly increased since the ex-Rodster 800 (125 mm front/rear), providing improved suspension clearance and the promise of even greater comfort. Comfort and sport go hand in hand: the riding position is tilted further forward, with handlebars moved forward 15 mm and footpegs moved back 5 mm as well as raised 15 mm.
The F 900 R doesn't just look more dynamic. Its body is also more dynamic.

The new generation also means updated electronics. Remember: the 800 came with ABS and two riding modes as standard. ESA, ASC traction control and a third drive mode were optional.
The 900 takes things up a notch. The 6.5-inch color TFT screen immediately puts you in the mood. The graphics are classy, it's thumb-controlled with the Multi Controller ring, and you can connect it to your smartphone. This makes it possible to set up interactivities ranging from the most practical (simplified GPS application, route planning and recording, etc.) to the most entertaining (music playback or making phone calls).

Then there are up to 4 driving modes - Rain and Road as standard, Dynamic and Dynamic Pro as options*. ASC, which can be deactivated, is now standard. It transforms into DTC traction control when the Driving Modes Pro option is selected. A temptation seriously put forward as it also gives access to MSR engine braking management, DBC dynamic brake control and ABS Pro. The Active package also includes an Up&Down shifter and an IMU inertial unit.
I'll give you the details of the Riding Modes at the end. In the meantime, let's stick to the options, with cornering lights, fiber-optic daytime running lights, keyless ignition, ESA Dynamic semi-active rear damping, emergency call, cruise control... In short, a robbery of the wallet.

BMW F 900 Ryou may have an army of chips supervising your driving, but it's still the right-hand handle that engages the brakes. Next to it, the sporty brake fluid reservoir has been replaced by a more road-going element. Then it's on to power metering, hoses and two radially-mounted Brembo calipers, each pushing 4 pistons onto 320 mm discs. The rear is much more timid, with a 265 mm diameter surrounded by a single piston. The dynamic brake light is there to warn you when you're braking.... Yes, like all brake lights! But this one flashes according to braking intensity.

Big efforts on the engine side, totally revised frame, increased equipment, much more seasoned design - the BMW F 900 R does better everywhere except on one point: weight. From 202 kilos to 211. Now, we're not talking about the anvil here, and the F 800 R series has always shown great balance and remarkable versatility. But.... is still 20 kilos more than an MT-09. And 1 less than a Z 900.
The F 900 R gives itself the means to seduce customers in a very combative segment. Laughter is out, but pride is in.

driving modes in action:

- In "Rain" mode, the throttle intake is smooth and the ABS Pro and DTC (Dynamic Traction Control) systems take account of road conditions in their adjustment characteristics, when the road is wet and therefore more slippery. The new MSR engine braking torque control provides maximum assistance.

- The "Road" mode offers optimum throttle admission, and the ABS Pro and DTC systems deliver optimum performance on all roads. Here, too, the MSR is in maximum position.

BMW F 900 R- In "Dynamic mode", the sporty side of the F 900 R is felt with greater intensity. The engine is tuned for optimum throttle response, and the DTC and ABS Pro systems are adapted to high coefficients of friction on the road, with take-off detection for the front and rear wheels coming into play only later. Intervention of the MSR engine braking torque control is also reduced. The default setting for Dynamic ESA - where available - is the "Dynamic" shock absorber setting.

- The "Dynamic Pro" mode offers the very sporty rider every opportunity to adapt the machine optimally to his own wishes and needs. Three throttle characteristics, three ABS settings and four DTC settings are available. This means that the level of intervention of the control systems can be tailored to suit a very sporty riding style, even down to deactivating the take-off assistants and intervening very late in the day with all the control systems.

It's really an excellent bike, super fun to ride, with one flaw: a wooden board would be more comfortable than this seat. But otherwise, this bike is really pleasant to ride, with a Chinese engine but versatile, even on big sessions, but for me, who's 1.85m tall and likes to take the bike out for 7-8h days of riding, it's really not cut out for that. Honestly, 2-3h rides max, and then it's really impressive. The Mivv half line gives a nice sound (I bought it that way, but the original line was fine too). Rating : 4/5

I fell for this F900R (sport edition 95 Chevaux, 2024) after having hesitated for a long time with an MT09 SP (a bike I also know quite well).
Why the F900R: More versatile, better quality, rarer too (and prettier, especially this livery, but that's subjective). The big drawback, but it's often the case with BM, is the fact that you have to take a full option to really realize that they know how to make motorcycles, and that helps with resale just in case. Even in 95 hp (Sport edition obliges), it pushes, it's efficient, it gives you the feeling of having taken riding lessons. The bike is ultra-precise, and far more playful than the tests suggest (as soon as you switch to Dynamic Pro...as an option, of course...).

Comfortable, the position of the feet is a little strange at first... not unpleasant but... to be tested... but once again to compare it to an MT, despite my 1m90 I don't have any back pain on long trips, and a little that impression of being "in" the bike, like on a KAWA.

The riding aids are really top-notch, in fact a little too much so, because you can quickly speed without looking out, especially with the shifter, and without getting your ass kicked, since the thrust is linear. Some testers have mentioned the slightly "vacuum cleaner/fade" noise of the original pot, which is something to be tested before having the line changed (which is what I wanted to do when I ordered the bike). The seller started one up, and it's...far from being the disaster I'd been told it would be. The bike snores well, and we're still within the neighborhood's noise limits.
As usual, test before you buy, and compare prices (13500 for this full-option edition)

I didn't know this bike, I'm coming from a kawa Vulcan s. I want to change, and by chance, I came across this one (I didn't think a BMW would fit in my price range: used full option, 10,000 kilometers at 6500€ or 7500€ from a pro.) I gave it a try... coming from the Vulcan and liking to drive quite quietly, I fell on my ass, I thought I'd get my arms ripped off at the first throttle, and no, the acceleration is supple, frank without being brutal if you pull hard, a pleasure. I think I'll let myself be tempted at this price. Rating : 5/5

Very happy, I've had it for 6 months and for me it's an excellent bike, this one doesn't make me feel lazy to ride it, I have to say that I come from a GS850F and the change is brutal for the better, this one is much more maneuverable as I'm allergic to the ground. Rating : 5/5
J’adore!
French Alex Model 2020
Having had this bike (grey/red, 105hp) for nearly 1 year now, I can say that I love it. The engine is perfect for me, it's really good for cruising, riding quietly, but also very good when you want to ride very sporty, very good availability at all revs, it picks up really well and pulls with great vigor and gives very good sensations. I don't understand why it has received so many mixed reviews from journalists and other Sunday testers, really, don't trust other people's opinions... To each his own! The cycle part is incredible, even in duo! The only weak point in my eyes is the saddle, which quickly gives you a pain in the ass. In terms of fuel consumption, depending on the mood of the day, it pumps between 4.2l and 4.8l per 100kms, which already gives a good range. What's more, I think it's really beautiful. In short, I'm the happy owner of this bike! Rating : 5/5
French Chris63 Model 2021
I own the 2020 version in Hockenheim colors (gray and red) with engine block and backsplash. Overall, I find it a success. Aesthetically, for me, there's no comparison with the competition (especially the MT09). This bike is a real eye-catcher. The 105hp engine is really efficient. Some journalists find it too linear. As far as I'm concerned, it's an engine that's easy to ride and capable of cruising on small roads, and that can take over at 2,000rpm without any problem. But it's just as powerful as soon as you get above 5-6,000rpm, and it really kicks ass. In cruising mode, my fuel consumption is 4-4.2 l. As for the rest, it's top-notch: chassis, suspension, TFT screen with 4 modes, heated grips, keyless... Rating : 5/5

very good, safe bike. a little tricky when manoeuvring, but a delight on mountain roads Rating : 5/5
French Pepe Model 2020
Coming from a Husqvarna 701 SM, having had a few Z 750r, MT09, Z 650 roadsters..
I bought a F900R A2 which is unbridled.
After a little less than 2,000 km, I really like this bike, comparing it to the MT09, I find it more complete.
Clearly, this F900R is good everywhere, but not excellent.
The engine is linear, but in the end, that's all to the good: you can feel that there's some grunt in there, without getting scared, and it works at all levels, especially in the mid-range, around 6,000 rpm
The brakes (Brembo for that matter) work very well, but a little too intrusive for me, especially at the rear.
The chassis, on the other hand, is a delight, once you've got your footing, you stay there, and the change of angle (despite its weight) from one bend to the next comes naturally, and the bike reacts pretty quickly.
For me, the minor drawbacks are
The 13L fuel tank is a little tight, and I'm closer to 6.5L than 5.5L per 100kms, especially in dynamic mode. In rain Yes, we're below 6L
2nd drawback: at low speeds, with its weight (and I also think that the steering damper doesn't make my job any easier), getting around town isn't easy.
In conclusion, I don't think this bike is made for the big city at the perif, or even for everyday city riding, but rather for leisurely strolls, or for mingling with friends in the mountains or countryside.
Ideal for a beginner or intermediate rider.
On the other hand, if you're looking for a bike that's got guts, aggression and character, it's not the best choice.

Be careful, on a low chassis, ESA is no longer possible... I was very disappointed to discover this when I received the bike at the dealership... Rating : 4/5

Keep an eye on the coolant reservoir - the cap seal can cause coolant splashes... I've had this happen to me on a 2023...this bike is very safe, with no vibrations, and you feel very comfortable. I recommend it for young licence holders, but for the others, the small flaw of this bike seems to me to be its character, the twin cylinder lacks imagination, which is a bit of a shame because the chassis is perfect... But it's still a very good bike. Rating : 5/5
French Chris Model 2021
Even lowered from the factory, I'm on my toes, which bothers me. When you start off, you have to wait until you're at 20km/h for the steering to be controlled. After that, it's all good fun: easy to handle, easy to get around on, great braking, a good compromise for having fun. I'm sorry that the fuel tank is small, even though the fuel consumption is around 5l/5.5. It's a pity I can't lower it any further, but now bikes are higher than they used to be! Rating : 4/5

If you're 1m60 tall, you won't have flat feet, but neither do I, as long as your 2feet touch and hold the bike well enough, it's not a problem...but ask for a low chassis! Rating : 4/5

Tested in the A2 version, I found it sluggish and disappointing engine-wise. A bridled Yamaha MT-07 is far more lively and fun!

In my opinion, this BM is a botched bridle

Otherwise, it's a beautiful bike and I suppose that unbridled in 105 HP it must be pretty good.

I have an A2 license. BMW offers a motorcycle with a sporty design, a rewarding performance, very safe equipment with its different riding modes, a flawless chassis, the best and most beautiful TFT screen on the market
after a 2019 500 CRB R, and a 2019 SV 650 X, the F900R is the bike that gives me the most feeling and safety
you should still consider some options :)

Very versatile for a roadster, as it's quite comfortable (especially with pilot-operated suspension), can be ridden as a duo (the F800R was still a little better in this respect), has a top-notch chassis (with very good braking), is quite torquey and powerful, handles very well, has a nice design and a very nice screen. The 2 downsides: a 13-liter fuel tank that's a little tight, and heavier than the 800 (mainly due to a new steel frame). Rating : 4/5

French jackdam Model 2020
super bike for its reliability, its design is now on a par with the competition in its category, its attack response is top-notch, powerful and flexible.....The only negative point is that it's not yet available in 1200 and weighs 20kg too much. All options are included in packages, but the standard equipment is more than sufficient!

Just for the record, BMW is not a reliable brand, quite the contrary
There are stats on the net, and as usual the Japanese brands are at the top of the table while BM is squarely at the bottom, even behind Ducat and Triumph that's to say.
