presentation of the 848 2010

it was almost certain that the 1098 would not be able to defend Ducati's new sporty profile for long on its own. A year after presenting the superb Italian Superbike, the Bologna factory shelved the 749 and launched the 848. This perfect copy of the 1098 differs only in the cubic capacity of its twin and some different peripherals. But the face remains the same, and still makes us drool.

with 250 cm3 less cubic capacity, the twin inevitably produces less power than its Superbike big brother. But that doesn't mean it's a 1098 on the cheap, far from it. The 848 benefits from all the experience and technology developed for its predecessor. It boasts 134 hp and a minimum weight of 168 kg.

this is truly remarkable. Consider that Ducati's first liquid-cooled, 4-valve-per-cylinder twin, the 851, was 3 cm3 larger and 32 hp less powerful. And compared to its predecessor, the 749, the 848 is 30% more powerful. A healthy dose of torque, almost 10 mkg, further enhances the big twin's thrust.

although this engine does not correspond to any category homologated for competition (for the time being), it still benefits from the careful attention of the Bologna engine-makers. Closely derived from the 1098 block, it too is fed by elliptical intake ducts, the angle between the valves is the same (their diameter is 39.5 mm at the intake and 32 mm at the exhaust), the cylinder head covers are made of magnesium as on the 1098 R, and the radiator and exhausts use the same technology as on the 1098.

Ducati 848hardcore Ducatists will be in for a shock when they fire up the engine. The clutch won't make a sound: it's now oil-bath technology. Sacrilege! A Ducat sports bike has always had a dry clutch. Well, not any more, especially when it saves 1.6 kg. The brand's hunt for weight savings also extends to its engine crankcases. Die-casting technology saves 3 kg in this area.

the chassis of the 848 is slightly different from that of the 1098. The diameter of the main tubes has been increased from 28 to 34 mm, while their thickness has been reduced from 2 to 1.5 mm. This saves 14% in rigidity and 1.5 kg on the frame. Not bad, eh? Clinging to the ends of the frame are a 43 mm Showa inverted fork, Brembo monobloc radial calipers, 320 mm brake discs (330 mm on the 1098), the superb, chunky swingarm, and lighter Marchesini rims (- 250 gr at the front; - 1 kg at the rear). At 168 kg, the 848 can now compete on the scales with the 600 Japanese supersports bikes. When you think that the 749 weighed 20 kg more, you realize just how much has been achieved in one generation of machines.
2010 - Appearance of an economical Dark version, with black primer instead of paint. The price of this version drops by 500 euros.

March 2021, I'm locked in by confinement. I can't wait to ride my 848 again. Some bikes have remained in the collective memory, like my R90/S, T120, R80G/S
The 1098/1198 and 848 are becoming legendary. Don't delay in buying one before it's too late.

the displacement is 848cm^3?
never seen that =/
frankly, I've always preferred Italians to Japanese, but now they've cracked..
for 14,000e, if you want to race, you might as well buy an R1 and a line with 60hp more, right? okay, there's something to be said for Italian charm and all that... but there you go anyway =/
then it's 3kilos heavier than a 1098r according to this article... it's not logical, even for such a magnificent bike

that's my opinion^^

I just bought it for myself. Too beautiful
I had a 749 before, and the difference is significant
More power, that's for sure. More character. No "hole" at low revs like the 749
Truly a beautiful machine
What's more, in white, it slams too hard!
