presentation of the 848 evo 2013

the 848 continues its career in 2013. The superb silhouette initiated by the 1098 continues to enrich the Ducati catalog, offering a sports bike that is both bewitching and more accessible than the Panigale.

Since the 916 - 748 duo, Ducati has always offered the dream of a big model with Superbike accents, and a smaller, more accessible sibling with the same fantasy clothes, minus the trunk. With the 848, we've gone one step further: as usual, it's got a magnificent hypersport look, and in the twin, there's plenty of cavalry available - all for the price of a Japanese hypersport.

this desire to get SBK into the hands of more bikers logically led the Italian manufacturer to offer even more. That's the mission of this 848 evo, which hides its cheek well while proving to be devilishly provocative. Fans can rest assured: the beautiful design remains! The pots under the saddle, the impressive single-arm and the timeless trellis frame are all in concert. Just as beautiful, just as racy, you'll have to take a close look at the 'evo' decal to recognize it. Or delve into the bowels of the beast. Let's see... Ah well: Ducati has once again plucked parts and solutions from the competition department to add watts to the 848. From 136, power climbs to 140 hp. The Testastretta Evoluzione twin now boasts the same potency as the late 999 from 2005, for a weight of 168 kg (18 less than the ex-hypersport). A little extra torque and the boiler can slam the 10 mkg mark. The solution? Straight from MotoGP: new elliptical-shaped intake ducts provide a 30% more efficient airflow cross-section, equivalent to 60 mm. As a result, the twin-cylinder breathes vigorously, and the combustion chambers compress the gases much more forcefully. Compression ratio reaches 13.2 to 1. Valve lift increases from 11.5 to 13 mm. Further on, 2 lambda sensors and catalytic converters are fitted. More powerful, the 848 is also cleaner, passing the draconian Euro3 regime.
As if to blend in better with the new 'Dark Stealth' color scheme, the engine maps are painted black (remember that those on the 848 were the first to be vacural process - for greater rigidity, uniform wall thickness and weight savings).
Bonus: the twin develops more watts, and requires less maintenance. The service interval has been extended to 12,000 km.

as a small 1098, the 848 had retained much of its predecessor's chassis. The 848 evo has even fewer scruples. It appropriates the trellis frame with its 1.5 mm-thick 34 mm tubes, its oafish single-arm, the 43 mm inverted fork, and its first name evo means that it also steals the monoblock brakes and a steering damper. With 320 mm Brembo discs and monobloc radial calipers, the diva will further improve its feel. To save a little weight (catalytic converters weigh a lot), the front cradle is now made of magnesium.
As a MotoGP and SBK fan, you won't be disappointed by the on-board electronics. The all-digital instrument panel may not be easy to read when you want to know engine speed, but it gives you everything you need to know at the touch of a button: rpm, speed, lap time, ambient temperature, battery voltage, water temperature, maintenance indicator, double trip + reserve countdown, and DDA control panel where applicable. DDA? Oh yes, I forgot. The data acquisition system is available as an option on the 848 evo.

with these improvements, it smells even more of the track and of competition - an ersatz when you consider that its displacement rules it out of any championship (too much displacement for supersport, and not enough against the big 1000s). But you've got to admit, when you consider its looks, and the fact that it comes with 140 wheels, it's a hell of a lot of fun.
