presentation of the 1200 Monster R 2016

the Monster has gone completely wild. Already copious in power and technique in its 1200 S opus, here it is totally supercharged in this R version. Pushed to the very limits of mechanical madness, the roadster from Bologna rediscovers the fundamentals and bestiality of the sultry S4, S4R and S4Rs. Extreme! The new Monster 1200 R couldn't be better defined.

it stands out from its siblings with its more angular exhaust, sportier rear body like a single-seater Superbike, top-of-the-range peripherals and engine. Here, the 11° Testastretta twin has eaten the lion. Ducati boosts its power to 160 hp. Enormous. The highest dose of watts ever grafted onto a Bologna roadster. To achieve this, the diameter of the throttle bodies has been enlarged to 56 mm, the compression ratio has been increased to 13:1 and the exhaust system now thunders through 58 mm of pipe. The Monster can now look down its nose at the S 1000 R and spit its venom on most of the hyperfighter segment.

fiery. Yes, and not only that. Lively too. The factory has raised the chassis by 15 mm front and rear, and the saddle to 830 m, for even more inclination in the corners and to torture the tires. Entrusted to Pirelli Diablo Supercorsa SP tires, the casings promise to be very sporty. It's a full 200 at the rear, which has to withstand some nasty angles and 13.4 mkg of torque. Damping is provided by high-quality, top-quality components. The all-black Öhlins fork (gold on the Monster S) is 48 mm wide. The rear shock absorber and steering damper are also Öhlins. Of course, the suspension is fully adjustable.

the weight is reduced to 180 kgs, 2 less than the Monster S. A few carbon parts, Marchesini forged rims and special footrests explain this reduction. And for braking, nothing less than the system used on the 1299 Panigale, the latest hyperport from Bologna. These are Brembo M50 evo calipers with 330 mm tracks; for the rear, the 2-piston caliper makes do with a 245 mm disc.

ducati either, electronics thou shalt receive. And excellent ones at that. The Monster 1200 R features Bosch 9MP 3-stage sport ABS, three riding modes (Sport - Touring - Urban), traction control with 8 sensitivity profiles and a TFT instrument panel.

with the Monster 1200 R, Ducati gives the roadster back the powerful, fiery taste of the Monster of yesteryear, before the era of the 1098 Streetfighter. In the meantime, power has taken a big step forward, and the sporting spirit rubs shoulders with a premium, muscular identity. The same robustness can be expected in terms of price.

French Yvan Model 2019
I'm lucky enough to own this bike and every ride is a real pleasure. I live in a mountainous country, and our national roads are a perfect match. This bike loves wide open spaces. It sends, it brakes, it's on a rail, it's perfectly suspended. In the fast corners, you take the angle a bit like Jorge Martin! Confidence is total. The equipment is top-notch. In sport mode, it's a factory of sensations. This bike gives me as much pleasure as making love to a crazy woman. It's just sublime... Rating : 5/5

French Pablio Model 2018
What a joy, equipped with Thermignoni pots and the original large exhaust pipes, it's just the right level of noise
It pushes hard, it brakes hard and it's super easy to handle, while the roadholding is fantastic!
Just a little adjustment on the rear shock to stiffen the suspension.

French saintpa16 Model 2019
I own a standard 1200 Monster from June 2019, with a 148hp "race" engine, and I have no regrets about this machine, which has now covered almost 10,000 km in 1 year. It's nothing but happiness, and yet in 37 motorcycles, whether Japanese, Italian or English, it has everything you need to have fun on our roads, hyper sport being complicated to exploit these days, this will remain one of my favorite .....quoique after having tried the SF S4V ...this last one will be the talk of the town Rating : 5/5
Puissance et couple
Hello Motoplanete!
When I read the technical data sheets, I notice differences in torque and power between 2016 and 2018. Ditto on the Ducati website.
All the press articles dating from 2016 announce 160hp and 13.4 mkg of torque. But on your 2018 sheet and at the manufacturer: 157hp and 12.7 mkg.
I can't find any answer about this change on the net. Thank you in advance for your clarification!

The question is pertinent, as quite a few people are wondering about the modified power figures on certain Ducatis.
At the end of 2017, Ducati modified its power measurement process for the homologation of its models. So, technically, the power generated by its engines doesn't change, but the values are appreciated differently.

A bit like changing glasses to see the same thing...
