presentation of the Panigale R 2017
while the 1299 Panigale gains cubes and watts, the R version continues to defend its colors in the Superbike championship. That's its mission! But due to regulations, going above 1.2-liter displacement is out of the question. Oh, so the civilian version can puff up its chest, spit out more horsepower and shamelessly kick ass, while the Panigale R has to limit its bodybuilding ambitions. That's not very fair...
Don't worry: in addition to its high-flying equipment, the Panigale R also gets a little testosterone treatment. The finely revised silhouette, with the same styling attributes as the 1299, remains the fine exercise praised by ducatists and other enthusiasts. Within the aluminum hull frame, the engine-makers have found some horsepower without touching the displacement. Since 2016, the top Panigale has been sending out no less than 205 horsepower.
a gain of 10 horses! Not bad, when the standard sibling benefited from an extra 86 cm3 to glean the same benefit. But not the same temperament. The Panigale R has to go further, higher and harder to find the extra torque and the big guns. The Superquadro remains true to its pedigree: a true racing engine. With a little more titanium (for the exhaust valves), a little more tungsten, a crankshaft balanced just right, a compression ratio boosted to 13.2:1 and aggressive camshafts on tap, the pistarde promises big thrills.
as usual, Öhlins suspension is included. While the 1299 Panigale S features electronically-adjustable components, the Panigale R retains a more classic approach, with manually-adjustable full suspension. Hence the charm of fine-tuning the suspension between sessions, with a set of tools waiting on the stand's toolbox, and a definite weight saving. Servomotors + wiring + suspension control unit, that's a lot of weight.
Developments also include a dry-running system for the machine. A new Lithium-Ion battery and a series of lightened parts save 6 kilos. The Panigale R now comes down to 162 units dry, and 184 wet. Lighter and more powerful than a Desmosedici RR... The wheelbase has been increased by 5 mm for greater stability at high speed.

And it knows how to treat itself: Marchesini forged aluminum wheels, full Akrapovic titanium line, Brembo M50 monobloc calipers, automatic tire size calibration and final drive ratio, DDA + data acquisition with GPS and tilt angle display, swingarm pivot point adjustable to 4 positions, Bosch 9.1 MP with rear-wheel lift control, 8-step DTC traction control, shifter for upshifting and downshifting without clutching, UMI inertial unit for continuous measurement of angle and pitch to improve the performance of electronic assistants.performance, DWC anti-wheeling, RFM engine brake adjustment, driving modes, handlebar controls for DTC, DWC or RFM, TFT instrument panel... Don't waste any more! A space shuttle, this Panigale R.
although the Panigale R is equipped with a number of carbon parts, we still regret the disappearance of the full carbon fairing. Especially given the price tag. From the 996 R to the 1198 R, Ducati's best Superbikes have always graced their owners with this more noble cladding. A superb view of the tank, partially uncovered by paint to admire the brushed aluminum, instantly revives the glamour and racing side.
The Panigale R evolves in the pure sense of sportiness that its function demands. A bridge between passion and competition, the most extreme Ducati in the catalog expects only two things from its rider: a big heart and a big cheque.
