presentation of the CRF 1000 L AFRICA TWIN Adventure Sports 2019

"- Didn't you say right?!?
- Not sure. But that's okay. It's rolling, isn't it?!!!?
- But no, bazar... It's rolling for you, but for my crossover. I don't have an Africa Twin, you freak...
- Hey oh, calm down !!! It's okay, let's go back. Even my Africa can't keep up anyway."
When a tall figure appears, rumbling with twin-cylinder power and no hesitation of adventure. The crew heads off to where their companions are heading back.
"- Look!!! What's that nutcase? And it looks like he's got the same bike as you.
- No, you've got it all wrong. He's got an Africa Twin Adventure Sports."

And that's how Jean and Robb came across Honda's TT heyday. While the brand has skilfully revived the spirit of the big off-road trail with its CRF 1000, and retained its maxi-trail clientele thanks to the presence of the Crosstourer, it lacked a little something to take it across the border. Where other kinds of adventurers dare to terrify the rocks. Their names are BMW R 1200 GS Adventure and KTM 1290 Adventure R, or even Ducati 1200 Multistrada Enduro Pro or Triumph 1200 Tiger Explorer XC. And now there's the more adventurous Adventure Sports version of the 1000 Africa Twin.

Its snout leaves no room for doubt, with its protective hoop in place of a jaw. It's not afraid to take a bite out of a bowl, and neither are the more or less treacherous asperities of lands forgotten by Caterpillars. The manufacturer has optimized it in this direction, with a number of welcome features. These include a much more enveloping engine cowling, an 80 mm higher bubble, a wider fairing and a rally-raid feel for the rider. The riding position has also evolved, with a flatter, 3 cm higher seat, wider footrests mounted on reinforced supports, higher handlebars and repositioned instrumentation. The Adventure knows that its rider will need to ride upright, and it's designed to make the task easier. For far and long. The fuel tank has been enlarged by 5.4 liters. Honda claims a range in excess of 500 kms.
But there will also be difficult, technical terrain, to the taste of Indiana Jones. This Africa Twin + isn't afraid to put its rims to the test. No changes to the spoked wheels - it's the suspension that's up for grabs. At 252 mm, the upside-down fork slides an extra 22 mm. The rear shock offers 20 mm more travel, for a total of 240 mm. The Adventure Sports thus gains 20 mm of ground clearance, for a total of 270 mm.

No need for extra power to go beyond the horizon. The twin, however, has been given a great deal of care and attention to make it even more enjoyable to ride. A better intake, a revised exhaust system and lightened balancers provide more mid-range response. Power from the 998 cm3 remains fixed at 95 hp and 10 mkg.
The arrival of Driving Modes will be much more noticeable. The transfer of technology from the racing side to the TT side for the winged firm. We already had 3-level traction control on the Africa Twin; now it's up to 7. Now we can play with mood on the engine side. There are 4 modes to choose from:
- Tour" mode features the most measured power (Power 1), an intermediate level of engine braking (2) and a high level of HSTC intervention (6).
- The "Urban" mode features intermediate power and engine braking (2), and a high level of HSTC traction control (6).
- Finally, the "Gravel" mode offers maximum power, low engine braking (1) and high traction control (6).
- A fourth mode - "User" - allows the rider to select and save his or her own settings for power, engine braking and traction control.

Honda has managed to keep the weight increase to a minimum. Among other things, this is thanks to a 2300-gram lighter Lithium-Ion battery. The Adventure Sports is 10 kilos heavier than the Africa Twin. Reasonable, especially as this is not where the weight will be felt. That's once you've packed your suitcases, tent, shovel, sleeping bag and all the other gear you'll need for your expedition.
An Africa Twin can be driven with two types of transmission. Classic, with a manual gearbox. Or robotized, with a DCT gearbox. You can vary the tempo by selecting gears at will and on the fly. Or automatic, with a choice of programs. A convenient D that manages everything for the rider. A more dynamic S with 3 levels of reactivity: S1 - S2 - S3. And a specific mode for Africans, the G. More suited to track and greasy terrain, it optimizes traction and limits slippage during gear changes.

Time to set off. Cold? Heated grips are standard, as is the 12V socket for plugging in... GPS? Phone? The real ones will use a map and compass. Gags from another era, perhaps. The 1000 Africa Twin Adventure Sports won't take sides. As long as the road is anything but smooth and short.

Maintenance

3/26/21
Manufacturer recall in the following countries: France, Portugal, Poland, Slovenia.

Excessive grease was applied to the O-ring of the reservoir piston in the ABS (Anti-lock Braking System) modulator. As a result, foreign matter may adhere to the grease and become pinched in the check valve during braking, causing input pressure leak and increasing the braking distance.

The gearbox pulls too long on the first gear and too much on the 2 gears. A first gear that pulls too long on trail sais very unpleasant. Rating : 1/5
Polyvalente
French Lolo Model 2018
Since 1983 I've only had Hondas, and this one is the most versatile. It's a real pleasure to ride, whether on the road or in the TT. There's torque at low revs from 2200rpm. Very low fuel consumption, 4.5 l/100. In three years, despite the confinement, I've covered 45,000 km. The DCT is a pure joy, I use it mainly in manual mode, what speed and flexibility in gear changes. Great range 500 kms, my record is 603 kms. Rating : 5/5
French john Model 2018
I used to ride a varadero 1000 ,today I own a 2018 Africa Twin Adventure sport in DCT gearbox.Superb bike ,the DCT is fabulous (D mode useless for me) on the other hand in sport mode 3 and Tourer a real pleasure.I highly recommend this bike as an antidepressant. John Rating : 5/5
Une tuerie
Biker for 40 years.
1 and a half years and 16,000 km on road and off with this AT adventure, and apart from the original tires, nothing but happiness. You have to be tall to feel comfortable at a standstill, otherwise it's a model of manoeuvrability at all times and in town despite its imposing volume. For me, the meca gearbox, but for those who only drive on the road, the auto gearbox is impressive. It's probably the best compromise between road and TT, since bm is heavier and less tt, while Ktm is less comfortable on long trips and not necessarily more agile in tt.
To each his own. For me, it's a "coup de cÅ"ur".

Polyvalence au top
French Model 2019
After having had 2 2-cylinder and 6-cylinder roadsters from the propeller brand, full of quality but with a major flaw in my eyes, the obvious lack of reliability, back to first love in July 2018, with this AT ADV sport in mech gearbox. I'd forgotten what a silent gearbox was! Also to its credit, a bluffing suspension, including off-road, worthy of that of a 2CV, and ample protection, including on freeways, which is a pleasant surprise.
3760 kms covered by 2 in 10 days last July, impeccable.
2 chain tensions in 10,000 kms. center stand option recommended, you won't regret it when it's time to grease the chain. Quite simply, a riding machine that won't break the bank...once you've bought it!
Have a good ride!

un régal, vive le DCT!
French Model 2019
After 41 years of riding, I've found THE one!
Extremely comfortable, powerful, not very heavy, EASY. The DCT is extraordinary: you can do what you want: lazy in DRIVE mode, excited in SPORT mode, the rider with the selector in his left hand! But why only at HONDA???? FUNCEZ!!!
Rating : 5/5
French Model 2019
I had a BMW 1200 GS and I was tempted by the africa twin for its DCT gearbox.this bike is a real delight.more agile and more playful than the BMW it also seems more powerful although it ONLY makes 95 hp.the DCT gearbox is a real treat.....Bref no regrets It's love at first sight! Rating : 5/5
A beautiful variation, it touches perfection. It's a pity you can't choose tubbless rims when you buy them, as they're much more practical and safer for everyday use.
It provides the solutions that long-distance tourers have been waiting for.
It's a great bike to ride, without overkill or unnecessary and expensive gimmicks.
It gets to the heart of the matter.

Selle
French Yviu2b Model 2018
Hello. I wanted to sell my Africa Twin DCT (2016) for this one but my small size (1.70) makes me think twice. Even if there could be a low seat, it should be original for us little men (at our request of course) and not charged as an option. Likewise, the center stand remains optional (grr). I'm still thinking about it (I've got time for February 2018). Bonne route à tous.

To answer Yviu. As far as I'm concerned, I made the choice to sell my 2017 AT for a .... CB 500 X! And you can be sure that I don't regret this choice at all: 40 kg less, less height and finally more torque where it's useful. As for the price, I don't need to tell you how much I've saved. In short, it's up to you! Rating : 4/5
