presentation of the XL 650 V TRANSALP 2001

the 600 Transalp has enjoyed 15 years of successful versatility. Honda has ensured its longevity by modifying it extensively, culminating in the model presented here. The most obvious aspect is the new fairing, more generous and sexier, providing better protection and giving the Honda trail bike an imposing stature. Less visible but more interesting is the new, stiffer chassis, combined with refocusing of the masses to improve handling. The engine swells to almost 650 cm3, hence its name. More displacement, but no real change of face for this mill: it's a workhorse, adaptable to any task, but lacking in thrills. The twin-cylinder engine is smooth and efficient, but shines more for its discretion than its joie de vivre.

we HONDA XL 650 V TRANSALPwould have liked more emotion, especially for a twin. In everyday use, the Transalp offers its rider everything you'd expect from a versatile and engaging machine. Natural and easy to ride, agile and reassuring, the Honda is welcoming and at ease in many situations. Passengers also benefit from a good seat and well-placed footrests. Whether you're cruising around town without a care in the world, or playing GT without batting an eyelid, this bike is a real pleasure to ride. The instrument panel is complete, the braking satisfying and the handling obvious. All the Transalp needs is real enthusiasm to complete the picture. With over 15 years on the market, there's no need to justify the Transalp's reputation.

I'm 62 years old, the smallest bike I've ever owned was a 250 kawa for the cup in the 80s, the biggest a 1200 LT between the two, many others and now a 2002 Transalp and every day I wonder why I didn't have this bike sooner, it's a delight, incomparably easy to handle for me, safe, economical, a real treat. Is it possible to restrict it for A2 and at what cost? Rating : 4/5
The bike came out before A2 license regulations, so it's pretty hard to say. You'd have to check with an authorized Honda dealer. He'd be able to give you the right answer. I think you could find a flange for A1 (34hp), but not sure about 48hp. Check anyway... Rating : 5/5

Polyvalence
Apart from a questionable accessibility for maintenance, a slight fuzziness in the front fork and a real lack of engine character. It's an excellent bike, adaptable to any situation. Whether you're riding alone or with a partner, it's easy to get going. It's very forgiving, easy to ride in town and in slow traffic. On the freeway, it's well protected, holds its course and can go far at 110 km/h. I've got a 2002 travel pack in the garage, and it doesn't make me dream as much as my old harleys and bm, but it does just as well (certainly not as fast) for well under a quarter of the price. Honda Transalp 650
French toretto2208 Model 2005
After more than twenty years of motorcycling, having had Honda cb, Dominator, Suzuki GS, DR 650 when I was younger, I then moved on to the VN 800 chopper, intruder, etc... and then to the Bandit 1250-style tourers, which I didn't enjoy at all, despite their monstrous torque. I've had no fewer than twenty bikes, and as I like change, I didn't know what to take back. Then I came across an ad for a 2005 Transalp 650. Well, I bought it, as if to say, but at 44 I really don't regret having gone back to a 650cc motorcycle. I've rediscovered the pleasure of my youth riding this Honda. What's more, it goes everywhere, and I do all the maintenance myself, because it's so easy to tinker with. Fuel consumption is a very reasonable 6L/100km. What's more, the parts aren't expensive at all and don't wear out quickly with normal use. This bike can be ridden anywhere, and despite its 56 hp, picks up very well. It's a joy to ride in complete safety, and I've even had the opportunity to push it to a low 180 rpm at 8500 rpm, but that's not the point, as the engine doesn't like it. What's more, at 1.95 m tall, I'm upright on the handlebars and my back hurts much less than with other bikes. And if I get a second one, it'll be the Transalp 700 or the Varadero 1000. But always keeping my 11-year-old Transalp. After all, at 20,000 km she'll still be with me for a long time to come... Rating : 5/5

This is my third 650, I've had a 2001, a 2004, and here's the 2006.... It's a bike that's never let me down, I do the routine maintenance myself.... It's a really good bike, whether you're going to work every day in all weathers, or going on vacation loaded like a mule....and above all, it's a very comfortable bike that's a godsend for those with back problems....(upright riding position and wide saddle combined with a more-than-correct suspension system)....For the record, I also own a '94 600 model that has now clocked up 18,000 kms.... and runs perfectly... Hello biker friends. I used to ride a VFR750 in Toulouse, then in 1990 I switched to the Transalp 600, equipped with three 45-liter Monokeys, a tank bag and two 10-liter water cans, fixed to the side panels. The tent was attached to the left-hand body. Plus the two of us, 50 and 72 kg, it couldn't fly...! The only problem was braking, so we had to plan ahead.77,000 kms, Spain x 2, Greece x 2, from Paris), Morocco, Portugal, England before continuing more peacefully to drive a friend in Corrèze.6,000 kms or so each vacation. what happiness and just a carburetor adjustment at 25,000 kms. The 650 version is the same, and the braking is much safer. all the more so as, having been discouraged by our leaders, we've been living in Portugal for the last three years. Transalp 650 model 2006 for 4 years and still riding with two people, this bike is superbly maneuverable and comfortable. Ideal for all types of riding. Reliable, discreet and pleasant engine noise. Good acceleration and excellent roadholding.
You can go from freeway to small village without any problem. Whether it's asphalt or a bumpy dirt road, it's a smooth ride. Very good, balanced braking. A delight on paths and winding mountain roads.
In short, a beautiful bike, designed and engineered for all road situations.

In response to the leaks on the upper engine: I had the same problem. It came from the intake pipes. All you have to do is tighten them. If you're on full throttle, you need to dismantle the clamping rings and remove the little "stoppers", which will allow you to tighten them more. In my case, it solved the leak.

The previous one was from 1997, had 62,000 km, and I entrusted it to good hands - immediately replaced by the next one from 2000, it's approaching 50,000km and I love it... again and again... it's a "tractor" for some, never out of tune, it's a "watch" for me! In fact, she's only afraid of bad treatment and bad pilots. Serviceable and easy to work with, this "mount" can travel the world if your "brain" respects it...

i own a transalp 650 from 2005, I've done more than 9000km this year, it's very versatile and I'm happy with it, it's been a year since I bought it second hand, it had just 15000km on it.however I find that the quality of the shock absorber is average, it's very dry when you're doing a long trip.after 150 to 200 miles, every bump in the road is felt keenly in the lower back. otherwise it's fine for going to work
The saddle isn't very comfortable either on long trips, which is a shame. On the other hand, it's economical: 4.8l/100 on small country roads and 6l/100 on freeways. I'd still like to improve its comfort, especially on long trips, because I'd like to keep this bike, which is very endearing, and it's my first big cube after my driving licence
If you have any ideas, please let me know.

After having ridden bandits,CBR,1200 GSX,750 GSXF,I opted for the 650 transalp,I didn't know this bike but having a job that requires a driver's license I have to preserve it and moreover I'm 1.90m I looked like a toad on these bikes, long hesitant because I was afraid of getting bored I placed an ad to sell or trade my 750 GSXF 2000 with 46500 Kms and so I exchanged for a 650 transalp 2005 with 37000 Kms gray with high bubble, the transaction took place 140 kms from my home, and on D-day I set off with lots of questions on my mind and the fear of returning with a calf, but I came back on the freeway and on this rainy day I held the course at a respectable speed (between 140 and 170 kms/h). the upright position and handling reassured me, and I must admit I was bluffed i'm very satisfied with this bike, it doesn't run too badly even if it's not a thunderbolt. I found it playful and the twin cylinder, which I didn't know about, fully satisfied me. What's more, I'm saving 90 euros on insurance, which isn't negligible,i hope this review has given you some answers to your questions, and if I'd wanted to keep riding a little harder, I'd have kept my other bikes, but I don't regret it - enjoy the ride! So can you give me your opinion? Rating : 5/5
French wolfberser Model 2004
Well, I'm going to give you a brief summary, I bought a 2001 model (22000 kms), after having had two previous vintages (94), excellent bike in terms of reliability, never had the slightest mechanical problem, which I do myself (really not complicated for a classic overhaul and above all not expensive)

Fuel consumption stabilized on autobeurk 5.3L/100 urban 6.2 l/100 6.5l/100 if I type in...

As for comfort, simply perfect, even over long distances, just like the SDS..

Two off-road rides, including the stella (trail ride every July between italy and france) I rode anakees, which are easy to ride as long as the ground isn't greasy, and even better with mitas E9...

You can load it like a mule, no problem

This bike is the Swiss Army knife of motorcycling..

For those who want a bike, don't worry....foncez....

After owning a dozen motorcycles, including 3 XLS, and a 250 XL in the 70s, I stopped riding 2-wheelers for 20 years. Then, with all the fiddling (2 to 3 hours on the ring road for 20 km), I got fed up and bought a black 2004 Transalp with 20,000 km on the clock. I've rediscovered all the sensations of a real trail bike, plus comfort and good looks. It's a great machine, inexpensive, fuel-efficient, comfortable (with the Ermax bubble) and with a bewitching sound. Its power is sufficient. What's more, it's incomparable in traffic jams, starts up fast, leaves those "scooters" in its wake, and knows how to be discreet too. What's more, other riders will spot you straight away. What more could you ask for? Rating : 5/5

After a break of a few years..
I've just tried out a '90 600 transalp in the conscession. It's true that it's not a "thunderbolt" like the GSXR and ZZRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR that I see accelerating in a straight line on dry pavement to impress the gallery
Tease the little 600 around 6,000 revs for 1/4 hour, you'll have plenty of power, a few scares or no more license
Don't mess around with GSXs... they're used at 40% of their power, or you'll have a blast within the hour (it's just showing off in front of cafés, that's all)
On bumpy country roads, wet and full of leaves, with sand and dirt flows... coming out of curves, which you won't necessarily have anticipated, you'll go as fast with a transalp as with a fighter jet on which you'll be clutching your buttocks, because at the first throttle you'll taste the asphalt and it'll hurt. (I've already given, I want more, I'm not masochistic)
Without sounding like an old fart, I've been riding motorcycles since 1971, and I've seen a bit of every evolution from the BSA 650 (first bike) to the Japanese, BMW and the rest, and I find this transalp very versatile, docile and easy to ride
However, I haven't tried it as a duo
Can anyone tell me about the conditions with a passenger (not so young anymore...)? I'm going to get pissed off... Comfort, acceleration, roadholding... under load
I ask the young to inform the old, (55 years) thank you, I will take the handlebars

I'm on my 4th transalp, I've had the previous vintages (91,94,97), all sold with high mileage and no mechanical problems whatsoever. The 650 is more comfortable, as versatile and economical as ever
And it's still a trail bike with 21 and 18 long-travel wheels

To go to work or to Algeria loaded like a mule...no problémo

On the other hand, on mountain roads, it's simply brilliant

I hope the 700 model will be just as good...

i own a transalp 650 from 2000, bought second-hand in 2002 (22000km), and to date I've done just over 50000km with it (it has 72000km on the odometer)
It's an unbeatable bike that goes everywhere without batting an eyelid (on vacation, loaded up like a mule, in the mountains, on the freeway, in town, and even a bit of the road when going quietly...)
Of course, I wouldn't regret it, but a buddy of mine bought a V-strom 650, and I tried it out, and seriously, there's no comparison. At the same price, I wouldn't hesitate for a second if I had to do it all over again. The V-strom is just as comfortable and easy to handle as the transalp, but the feeling is incomparable! in short, the v-strom is a transalp with an engine, plain and simple!

This is my 5th Transalp... but my first 650, which I find less traily and more roadworthy than the 600, but also more comfortable for the passenger. My only complaints, which apply to big people like Bibi, are that the handles are too thin for my little big handcuffs, and that the wind resistance prevents me from riding the 130 over long distances (although I did test a good 150 over 200 km on very wet ground, with a lot of water and wind: no problem). I also agree with the previous comments: 15-20 hp are missing... Otherwise, it climbs Paris sidewalks well, and is slim enough to squeeze through the ring road. Reasonable cost in insurance, fuel/ to the big trails. In short, I'll probably get a 6th... Rating : 5/5

I agree with everything that's been said and its opposite. I wanted to buy the new transalp 2005 in Switzerland, but those dear Swiss importers claimed that the evolution of the transalp wasn't significant enough, which isn't totally untrue, but the problem is that they (the importers) let you buy it anyway at full price. As a result, rather than buying a 2004 Honda transalp in 2005, people (myself included) looked for Suzuki V-strom, BMW 650GS, Italian Belles and others in the same category. For me, it was sad because: yes, it lacks 10 to 15 more horses, yes, it lacks ABS, yes, Honda is stingy, but it's a hell of a versatile bike. At the end of the story (a long one, I agree), I told myself that if I found the OCCASE of the millennium, I'd buy a Transalp, and bingo, I found a 2004 with all options and few kilometers for almost half the price. BUT, I would have gladly bought it new!!!.....

i've had a 650 for 3 months and I've done 4000 km with it. Honestly, it's a very nice bike, because I have no worries about its reliability, comfort or handling. With a high Ermax bubble, you can ride relaxed up to 130 km/h, even with your passenger, who also appreciates that it's not too hard and that it's comfortable. An excellent "little bike", you shouldn't expect high performance. Fuel consumption is now a consideration: an average of 5.5 l/100 km at 110/120 km/h. Still, that's not an insignificant argument. The 7.6 l at 130 km/h in the performance section, I don't really believe. Rating : 5/5

i've just been offered this super becane it's been more than ten years since i stopped motorcycling
i've always had trails 600dr then 750dr but with the 650 transalp I'm really happy she's great in town on the road and frankly on the trails for the moment she's a hell of a bike I'm not disappointed to give up the mono now it remains to be seen on sandy tracks

I've had a 2003 transalp for 2 months now, and I'm completely satisfied with it. It's comfortable and supple for two-up riding (the passenger's opinion was decisive during tests with these rivals), and it's still fun to ride when you want to kick the handle..
The only regrets are that the bubble is ridiculous in windy conditions at 130 km/h and above, and that the original tires don't allow you to stray too far from the marked trails
Otherwise, it's simply irreproachable and aesthetically appealing. Thank you, Dad, for this magnificent gift

I've had the 2005 version for 2 months now and I'm very happy with it. It's got a good head, a sporty but serious look, incredible flexibility (it outperforms a mono), everyone knows it and it attracts sympathy. The little thing that disappoints (but I forgive her) is her stinginess in terms of sensations. Rating : 5/5

I've had a TRANSALP 650 XLV for 2 months now and I'm very happy with it: great braking, great roadholding (I put Bridgestones on it), good, fairly smooth acceleration. To get to work I do about 100km/day and I'm in great shape (no more broken back). On the track (we have quite a few serious ones in Corsica), it defends itself very well despite my small size
In short, it's an excellent all-rounder for my taste...

I've had a transalp since August 04
Nothing to say except that it's allowed me to discover some splendid corners. In fact, if you really want to, you can make it do some pretty spectacular feats on small roads
Just beware of the original bridg trail wing tires. Not the best for a rally!

Well, manight's dad is right. I've been riding mine since 1993 - low maintenance, reliable and great noise. In town and in the mountains, it's always there. It's a shame it's not available in 750. And for those who consider it expensive new or used, I'll tell them that the quality of alloys comes at a price and that if I switch to the Varadéro 1000 I'm not sure I'll want to sell it. Hey, TAN, you're all over the motorcycle sites
It's true that the TRANSALP is imposing and "classy"
But the price is also classy. In fact, it's too expensive, and even very overpriced second-hand in my region
It's my dad's bike, and as MANIGHT says, it's true, it's ridden by a lot of "old-timers" with old driving licenses
I think that the new FLE 500 will make it more affordable
sincerely

Hi everyone, I have the 2003 model and it's not bad but I'm disappointed by the 2005, the black rims aren't pretty and it's still missing 10-15 more hairs, it's a shame
Bonne route a tous

After years of motorcycling, between Suzuki 650 SV, Kawa 500 GPZ, Triumph 955 RS, Bandit 1200 S, Honda CBR 1000, I've had enough of broken backs, vertebrae that need to be replaced regularly, and the game of hide-and-seek with speed cameras

For the price of a scooter, I found myself a used Transalp less than 30 months old. I'd never ridden this type of machine before

I was surprised to get the hang of it: the engine revs smoothly, the exhaust lets out a nice low wail, it's serious stuff. You're high up, which is great for weaving in and out of traffic. Pick-up is smooth. Starts are brisk enough to drop anything with four wheels when the light turns green

On fast lanes, the ring road and freeways, the machine is far from ridiculous. There's plenty of room for speed and acceleration for those who aren't looking for a high-speed offense. The kilometers fly by in a comfort worthy of a grand tourer. The fact remains, however, that the side wind resistance and bubble protection are sometimes a stark reminder that you're not on a BM

Handling is brilliant: you can comfortably negotiate kerbs, roadworks and speed bumps without slowing down. We can already imagine ourselves on the forest roads of southern France or Corsica

In short, under a very classy dress (mine's metal gray) that lets me go to work in a suit, a machine that doesn't shy away from long roads and cross-country trails for weekends or vacations

The ideal bike? If not, it's not far off.

I've had 5 transalps in 10 years (3 600 and 2 650.) I'm going to sell my last 650 (May 03, 22600km). I was looking forward to this new transalp 2005. I'm very disappointed because Honda's timidity is still a reality. In fact, at a time when Suz is selling more and more 650 V.STROMs, Honda is content with a very superficial tinkering and doesn't change a thing in the engine, which could easily gain the qq of horsepower it lacks / the suz. So I don't know what to get for this year... All Honda is going to gain is to kindly give customers to the competition; maybe they have too many customers... I'm in the Massif Central, the land of trails, and quite a few of my friends have already abandoned Honda for Suz and its V.STROM. What's more, even new drivers are switching to Suz. A bon entendeur salut... A transalpine rider very disappointed by Honda Rating : 5/5
i agree with Streetman about the price of the transalp. Far too expensive... even second-hand... the price of fame, some would say... I also find it a bit wide (the tank on my KLE is much narrower and I find it more pleasant.... at the expense of range). I'd have liked to see a variation of this bike, a bit in the style of the 650FX (stripped-down design to the extreme) that would have made a very simple, very reliable bike. Rating : 5/5

great bike, but a little expensive for this good old v twin largely amortized... yes, provided to forget any notion of fun, pleasure related to the engine... one moves in transalp, serenely, but one does not make motor bike... I know it I bought one since 15 days and I am bored to death... Rating : 5/5
