presentation of the Z 500 2026

It took 20 years.... 20 years for the 500 to return to the basic roadster segment. From the days when youngsters started out with a Honda CB 500, a Suzuki 500 GSE or a Kawasaki 500 ER-5. The movement began with timid 250s and 300s, then, as time went by, this fringe category grew and grew, until the machines were no longer curiosities. With the new Kawasaki Z 500, the wind is starting to move the shoes.

It doesn't have the CV of a 1000... Yet it seems almost as irascible. Since the arrival of the Z 300, Kawa has taken great care over the appearance of its "small-medium-sized bikes". The latest arrival is anything but a polite, good-natured companion; its nervousness is immediately apparent on its face. The Sugomi style that has animated the Zs since the 800 has shifted to a Mortal Kombat-style masked look for this Z 500. His eyes are shifty, his nose is snarling and his shoulders smell sharp. For a first impression, its impact is direct. The perfect opposite of a Triumph 400 Speed, all sweetness and cuddly forms.

Examination of the engine brings us back down to earth. The twin intends to offer more reasonable performance than the crazy look on the front of the bike. But in every way superior to the Z 400. The twin is 52 cm3 larger, thanks to an increase in piston stroke. The compression ratio has been lowered, the air intake revised, the connecting rods, pistons and vilo new, the clutch overhauled and the balance shaft optimized.
The result is not in the power but all around it: the Z 500 spits out the same 45 horsepower as the 400. On the other hand, watts are available much earlier throughout the rev range, with a maximum reached 1000 rpm lower, i.e. 9000 rpm. This increase in displacement has also greatly benefited torque, with fuller mid-range revs and a half-mkg gain. The 4.3 mkg are reached at 6,000 rpm, 2,000 rpm ahead of the 400. The Z500 promises much more pronounced acceleration and throttle response.

Kawasaki Z 500 This block is still a structural element of the chassis, with the tubular steel frame resting on it. These are the same components as on the 400, with a preload-adjustable monoshock, 41 mm forks, 17-inch wheels and one brake disc per wheel. The changes are identified in the discs, which are no longer Galfer-shaped, and the suspension settings have been recalibrated to take account of the engine's new strength.

The manufacturer also took the opportunity to revise the seat, redesign the front mudguard and mirror support rods, and completely rethink the instrumentation. The Z 500 gets a much more stylish speedometer. All digital and LCD, it gives priority to the engine rpm bar graph, speed and gear engaged. The other essentials remain within easy reach, with trip, time and fuel wisely placed.

Aware of the smartphone craze, the half-liter Z is equipped with Bluetooth to pair up the mess and activate cronyism between the bike and the Rideology app. This allows the rider to be alerted to calls or messages, and to consult bike info, riding logs and maintenance info. Kawa goes one step further with the SE version, installing a 4.3-inch TFT screen.

The new Z 500 doesn't overhaul the fundamentals of its predecessor, but with its 451 cm3 mug, it really does look like the 400 that's had a course in fight club. It remains natively accessible to A2s, but will it succeed in stepping out of the shadow of a Z 650? Kawa is making an effort on price to "broaden" the public's view.

French LoLo Model 2024
Excellent A2 bike, maybe the best, the handling of a 125 in a hyper-balanced chassi consumes very little fuel and when you open up in a curve, few big bikes can keep up. Suitable for everyone, I'm 1.85 m tall, and friends who are 1.60 m tall are fine with it, whether they're just starting out or want to get the hang of competition and get a bit of a kick out of it. I'm taking part in the French road rally championships with it in particular. It's so easy... Honestly, go for it. Rating : 4/5
