presentation of the 900 ZX-9R 2003

it's hard to tell the 2002 9R from the 2001 model. The new model is discreet about its plastics. New front mudguard and redesigned rear shell, reinforced swingarm - basta! We've covered all the visible differences. Under the fairing, however, the greens have been hard at work. The main focus has been on stiffening the chassis. The stronger swingarm is anchored 2 mm further forward to a new aluminum frame. The engine also contributes to rigidity. The cylinder head benefits from an additional fixing point, and the rear ones have got rid of the silentblocs. Less attention has been paid to the engine, which nonetheless inherits a new carburetor rail (yes, the ZX-9R still resists the charms of fuel injection), a new crankshaft and a redesigned cylinder head. On the track, the 9R lacked ground clearance, and the alternator housing paid the price when used in racing conditions. To remedy this, the alternator rotor is smaller, which reduces the size of the housing. With all this, you'd think that Kawa was gearing its big sports bike towards greater radicalism... Not so. The Ninja is more efficient, but remains the most user-friendly sportbike on the big-bike market. With its protective fairing, almost comfortable riding position and buttock-friendly seat (not a slice of bread), it's on the other side of the extreme offered by a 996 or R1. Even the suspensions are relatively accommodating, without being overpowering on the track. This is a great quality, as most owners of big sports bikes wear out their rubber mainly on open roads.

but how does this new 900 perform on the asphalt of the master racetrack? Surprisingly, Kawa's efforts have paid off: the machine is more incisive, and positions itself more easily and precisely. Wider fork crowns and a (slightly) higher rear end give it greater dynamics. The ZX-9R's inertia is slightly greater than that of its rivals, allowing it to be swiftly swung from one corner to another. Frame reinforcements add real rigidity, as well as unwanted kilos. Today, the Ninja weighs 186 kg dry. You can feel it. Somewhat time-hunting, but not braking. The discs, gripped by 4-piston calipers (previously 6), have been enlarged by 10 mm. As progressive and powerful as ever, it remains one of the best, despite having (somewhat) less bite than the current generation. The new carburetors favor efficiency over feel. The more linear power curve and earlier onset of torque make for a more efficient ride, at least on the clock, as adrenalin doesn't rush through the veins. The excitement loses what the numbers gain. Drivers will concentrate more on the machine's behavior. They won't be disappointed by the Kawa. The new swingarm and suspension settings further improve handling. With harder springs, the fork works more progressively, mastering mass transfers brilliantly. A steering damper won't be essential, as the lively, efficient front end doesn't seem prone to untimely steering inputs. Not flashy, efficient but not radical, the new ZX-9R continues the tradition of non-exclusive sports bikes, only better. It takes a step back from the hardcore R1 and GSX-R 1000, at least on the racetrack. Its versatility, comfort, protection and rock-bottom price are serious assets to be taken into account when making a comparison

Spanish Model 2003
I bought it new in 2003 and it's still with me in 2025, the best bike I've ever had by far, the chassis efficient and noble, the lowers of this bike I've yet to see in any current model, comfortable, efficient and very very fast, I use it both on the street and on circuit and I wouldn't change it for anything in the world, and that I had the ZX10R 2008/10 circuit, but the angle grip of the ZX9R no way the ZX10R has it.in short, the best Kawasaki bike in its history in terms of quality, 86,700 km and not a single breakdown EVER. French Phil34 Model 2002
The first bought almost new in 2000, the second
bought 17 years later after a long break from motorcycling. Only this model came to mind. Since then, it's been hard to change my bike, even though it's getting old.

French Ninja Master Model 2002
At last, a motorcycle created BY NINJAS FOR NINJAS!!!!
Don't listen to the c....ries of the so-called "specialized" press !!!!
It's the best bike ever, period !!!
In its full version, I'll ruin any R1 on road or track... On the other hand, it's not a bike for just anyone... Beginners, freaks and sensitive souls please refrain...

Hi everyone. I live in HK and bought this bike, of course in full version here. I've never had a Kawa before and really wanted one, and seriously, this Ninja is pure happiness. I'm thinking of installing a 15-43. D\'après les avis plus bas ça donne bien... Rating : 5/5

A pretty, comfortable sports bike that's astonishing, with a chassis and engine that are a joy for a normal biker like me. I still have fond memories of my short test ride. Both very sporty and versatile, it makes you think... Rating : 5/5

Hi guys,
After having had Gsxr1300 (Haya), ZX12R, ZX9r from 2001, daytona955i centenary and others. I came back to the famous ZX9R and to be sure, I took the 2002 model. Well, it's been a long time since I've had so much fun, already we're talking CARBU, guaranteed sensations, no useless gadgets, just what's needed. My daily driving position (driver and passenger) is very pleasant (I do around 90-100kms/day), and I take it out whenever the weather's nice
For those who find it lacking in the aforementioned peachiness, just switch to 15-43 instead of the original 16-41 and you'll be telling me all about it
More than enough for us pilots! In my opinion, anything more is just for show ....
Rating : 5/5
A motorcycle like no other! A rational motorcycle full of compromise. Powerful enough (even at 106hp) and nimble enough to have fun, reliable and devoid of all kinds of electronic gadgets. The size of a real old-fashioned sports bike: when you get on it, you feel like you're sitting on an impressive monster, not a cell phone... In short, this is a sensational motorcycle (one that arouses the senses and emotions), designed for the pleasure of riding Rating : 5/5
French Ludo Model 2002
I ride a 2002 600 fazer....and I've just tried out this bike (a friend's), which is truly magnificent in every way! I find it almost as maneuverable as mine (except for the turning radius...but easily forgivable for a sportbike), the engine is very pleasant and responds to the slightest request, the chassis is really very good....and above all an unsuspected comfort for a sportbike (which puts in this category, the Gex and other R1s at a loss on the road)! I've made up my mind that my next bike will be the ZX-9R! Rating : 5/5
French Patoche Model 2002
Overall, a well-rounded motorcycle. Comfortable and welcoming, especially for a tall guy like me (1m86). Not too exclusive, pleasant on long trips
Very versatile. The only minor disappointment is the engine's character, which I'd describe as a little "calfish" (even at full throttle) compared to my CBR900 (though 10 hp less). It gets nice from 7000 rpm. There's not much torque down low, and the cavalry takes a long time to build up. The carburetion is too poor from the outset. Installing a +10 pts nozzle with K&N and a 16-tooth primary pinion (instead of 17) significantly improves the situation.

The aesthetics, the engine, the personality, the protection, the comfort, everything appeals to me on this bike and as FRED says, it's a great, realistic bike that's "usable" for most bikers.Bonne route à tous Rating : 5/5
French fred Model 2002
A great, realistic bike! A +-comfortable fighter jet capable of jettisoning many a radical hypersport that's inoperable on open roads. In any case, three-quarters of hypersport nerds don't know how to use it. So an experienced biker will be able to drop a lot of clunkers with a supposedly inferior bike! Before you can exploit 140bhp on a twisty road, you've got to have it right! An exciting bike that can be ridden every day. For performance addicts, remove one tooth from your sprocket and add three teeth to the rear sprocket... Then we'll see where the r1 and other gex bikes are.... Rating : 5/5
