presentation of the ZXR 400 R 1995

it could look like a bluff or a daring gamble, but there it is: a Kawasaki ZXR... 400 cm3. A displacement that's very much out of fashion in France. So why did Kawa France decide to import it to France? Quite simply, for the pleasure of the sport.

because of their hollow character and cruel lack of watts, 4-cylinder 400s have never had much success in our country. On the other hand, this displacement is very popular in Japan. There, renowned sports bikes with a low cubic capacity delight young Nipponese: GSX-R 400, FZR 400... (Editor's note: if you look back over a longer period, you'll find 400 cm3 models such as the Bandit, CBR, Monster, VFR, SVS...).
The ZXR was conceived as a passion machine, with no real notion of profitability or commercial success. In fact, at almost 5 bricks, there's plenty to think about. That's the price of a good 750, but it may not bring you the same level of satisfaction; or rather, not in the same way.

the pleasure is first and foremost visual. The Kawa is a beautiful, very sporty machine, reminiscent of the Stinger or the ZXR 7 endurance bike. Aggressive, racy and flatteringly proportioned, the bike is easily mistaken for a top-of-the-range model. And since there's never any reference to displacement (except on the registration document), it's almost impossible to guess that this is a "small" ZXR. A perfect illusion in the paddock. But don't be fooled into thinking that this is a machine that looks the part but doesn't act the part. No, it's a real sports bike, and one that can dry up more than one on the track. The chassis is beautifully designed, with an aluminum perimeter frame, 41 mm inverted fork, aluminum swingarm very similar to that of the Stinger, 300 mm brake discs and wide rims fitted with radial tires - 120/17 at the front and 160/17 at the rear.
KAWASAKI ZXR 400 RNor is the engine block a plastic toy. It's a beautiful, compact engine, with 4 valves per cylinder and super-square internal dimensions. Fed by 32 mm carburetors, it is rated at 65 bhp and 14,500 rpm. In terms of performance, we're well over 160 hp/L. Now you're beginning to see where she's going with this.

Kawasaki ZXR 400 R 1995 - 1Kawasaki ZXR 400 R 1995 - 1

unlike bigger bikes, which impose a muscular ride due to their high power output, the 400 allows a cleaner ride, in search of beautiful trajectories to take full advantage of cornering speed. The pleasure of drawing a beautiful curve, then accelerating early in the turn to come out fast and true.

an exhilarating little bombshell to ride, it's nice and brave of Kawasaki to offer us this ZXR 400. Beautiful, sporty and generous, this little green sports bike is made for those who love trajectories. Yes, OK, it's not cheap, but this kind of bike isn't considered by its price, but by its qualities above all.

Just as you said: easy, precise, sporty, super-long gears and lots of revs, but above all the noise with a line. What a sound! Rating : 5/5

For me, the best Kawa. Better front end than any Stinger or Tomcat I've ever owned. It reminds me of the S2 350 I also owned, but especially of the 1974 H2 750. It was unbeatable on mountain roads. It was very beautiful. Handling, braking, low weight and a great engine would still make it a super sports bike today
With the Kawa 2-stroke, it's the one I regret today.

A 100% sportbike that's easy to get used to, but unleashes its fury above 9000 rpm and becomes a racing beast
It doesn't pick up anything, as you'd expect from a Kawasaki, and behaves like a 2-stroke
Like its big sister, the 750 Stinger, it's as beautiful as you could wish for, and requires flawless maintenance. I'm the proud owner of a 1994 model, and I'm not about to part with it: it's a superb sports bike

Une petite ZXR d'enfer.
French DJP.WOLF Model 1994
I'm the proud owner of a 1994 400 ZXR. Although not very popular in France in the '90s, this copy of the 750 Stinger has all the assets of its larger sibling, plus a few kilos less, inverted fork, and a hefty price tag, but it was well worth it. It's easy to ride, behaves like a 2-stroke, doesn't pick up at all but goes wild from 9,000 rpm, and looks like a sports bike. I would have preferred an H2 or H1 SP model, but I'm not going to get depressed about it. Best wishes to all. Rating : 5/5

i'm the proud owner of a ZRX 400 dated 12/08/92, vintage 93, which had 6000 kms left on it at the end of the running-in period and was now in good condition !!!! well OK super maintenance but 78000 kms and original distri chain, 1 clutch, pads dead as the tires (tx 15 michelin and tx 25 at the rear for connoisseurs) in short silencer MIG carbon exaust concept, kit dynojet stage 1 the 2 and 3 do not blend :( KN air filter and that's it, speedo blocked at 250 voui voui!! now I have a 13/45 transmission in place of the original 15/45 but I don't dare pull as hard as in my youth when certain square cans didn't exist on our roadsides ;)and I'm getting old at 35
voila it must be maintained as an exceptional motorcycle designed to promote the 400 of the time, French trophy from 88 to 94 or so with 400 FZR YAM and 400 VFR honda (single arm and everything and everything! mini RC 30 or 45 when not even ;)but the KAWA best engine race results attest
for those who want more information on the little jewel that sleeps in their garage let me know

I've been riding a '93 zxr400 for 5 years now.i bought it in 2000 and had only ridden it on tracks.after a complete engine rebuild (1700€) it's been running smoothly for almost 20000Kms.so fragile i don't think for any biker who respects his bike!!!

Seriously fred, I should have read your mess before buying my becane, it would have saved me spending millions of dollars... In fact, after a small box,(spactacular anyway) I have just reassembled the bike with a maximum of original parts... the problem is that the parts are no longer manufactured or are overpriced.....ex....2 crappy radiator mounting brackets = 350 €....or a speedometer block = 1050 €....seriously, it's a little bomb....designed for beginner riders and for those who want to have fun on the track, but you've got to have dollars or you'll cry.......morality......I'm mazoooo....but this bike is my 1st and only in my heart. in reply to killmaniac who doubts the top speed of my 1996 Zxr 400
the speed I'm indicating (235km/h) is the top speed I've reached "on the odometer".it's obviously not a real speed.I think everyone on the web will have understood that.but killmaniac didn't seem to have grasped the nuance...how sad for him!
unless he didn't notice that his 400 Zxr had 6 speeds and not 5
come on, no hard feelings...

i've got one sleeping in my cubicle (1996 model, 14,000 kms old).it's very hard to find a used one.most of these bikes are very tired, if not completely rinsed out! plus, it's not cheap because it's so rare.it requires very expensive maintenance, and spare parts are unaffordable.valve clearances must be checked every 10,000 kms (because of the high revs).with this machine, over-revs and other "breakers" are strictly FORBIDDEN!
otherwise you're guaranteed engine failure (valve and cylinder head salad well known to Kawa dealers, who have sold Zxr 400s to morons who have no respect for the fragile mechanics of this bike)
apart from that, it's a breathtaking machine that works like a charm as long as you respect and pamper it. mine's original, and it does 235 kph (on the track!) without a problem. so if you're careful (respect the engine's warm-up time, don't over-rev and shift your gears with respect for the gearbox) and you've got a substantial maintenance budget, this rare machine is for you!on the other hand, if you're broke, not a handyman for a penny, and you're a motorcycle "smasher", GO AROUND! otherwise you're heading for ruin! buy an unbreakable bike instead (like the Honda cb 500).the Zxr 400 really is a bike for enthusiasts, for enthusiasts (and perhaps even the ideal sports bike for a woman, because of its low seat height).bonne route à tous!

i'm about to buy one to ride on the bordeaux merignac circuit and i must admit i can't wait to get it. it's said to be a great machine for riding on the track and that it pushes relatively hard for a 400. the footrests are going to be hot!!!! Rating : 5/5
