presentation of the 690 Duke R 2016
The KTM 690 Duke isn't just a roadster. It also boasts the most powerful single-cylinder engine on the market. A fact that is transcended on the R model. Just think: 75 horsepower from a single piston housed in 690 cm3. Here, KTM brings out the best in this architecture. Its new ribs, the installation of an additional balance beam, the technical improvements made to this generation of Duke, the impressive engine speed (9,000 rpm) and its consistent, sporty character are enough to make mono enthusiasts fall in love. Also, with the Akrapovic exhaust fitted as standard, the sound and blast go hand in hand with the engine's gniak.
the 690 Duke is lived in part by this punchy mill, and totally by its singular existence. The Mattighofen-based company has reserved the fullest expression of its potential for the R. 2 hp more powerful than the standard model, it also benefits from a much-improved chassis and electronics.
On the suspension front, things have gone up a notch. The upside-down forks and WP shock absorbers are of higher quality, fully adjustable and with greater travel. Compared to the basic Duke, there's 15 mm more travel on either side, allowing the components to slide 150 mm. The seat is higher, but not by the same amount. The whole riding position is different on the R. KTM wanted the Race on board. A different handlebar, footrests higher and further back, and a seat height of 865 mm (30 mm higher than the Duke) set a more pronounced tone for attack.

The mono's mood can be adapted to the rider's desires in three different ways. While only one riding mode is available on the 690 Duke, there are three on the R. In Rain, Street or Sport, the electronics adjust the bike's spiritedness and traction control. But that's not all. There's also an engine management system that acts as an anti-drible (MSR), and a Supermoto ABS that is set aside for the rear wheel. So you can happily plant the brakes while allowing the stern to slide. Finally, this ABS takes into account the angle of the bike to modulate its action.
On board, the TFT screen on this generation of Duke looks good, almost precious for a machine designed to set the tempo with a rev counter and some wacky corner entries.
significantly more expensive than the standard Duke, the 690 R is also much better equipped and far more efficient. This makes it even more exclusive, yet even more striking. KTM perpetuates, enhances and nurtures a philosophy for this roadster that is both punchy and quirky, playful and unique, hectic and sporty. Top mono for a machine that's never been like any other.
