presentation of the 790 Adventure 2019

KTM has established solid positions in the large trail segment. Its 1290 Adventure models are the most muscular in the category. Their reputation is well established. Now it's time to go on the offensive in mid-size territory, as the 790 Duke has done in the roadster segment. The 790 Adventure is the latest addition to the adventurous family.

katoche has obviously decided to approach the terrain with a different face. Some cultivate the trail look, others are inspired by rally-raids... The Austrian company wanted to set itself apart, with a look that combines an equine and a grasshopper. The upper profile is slender, the head eccentric, the belly bloated; audacity plays with mischief for a motorcycle with high expectations. For it wants nothing less than to take its crew on the daily grind, the roads, the paths, the weekdays and weekends, in the belief that adventure awaits at every bend between home and work. Or behind every stone hidden by an avenue. In short, Adventure for everyone, everywhere. With the welcome accessibility of an engine perched between power and reasonableness.

the 1290's 160 horsepower may make you salivate, but its size means it's aimed at a more discerning clientele. The 1090 is already more accessible, but still imposing. This is where the 790 plays one of its trump cards, with a size and engine that will appeal to all those who want to put their foot in the stirrup.
This 799 cm3 LC8e first made its mark on the Duke. Moving to the rhythm of two parallel connecting rods, it has left a few nags in the checkroom in order to deliver more torque on the trail bike - 9 mkg max when the roadster offers 8.8. It's not much, but we'll remember the swelling of the curve, which makes the powertrain more available. In terms of power, the rider can count on 95 hp, a figure perfectly in line with the sector and the competition. Bonus: it's A2 license-eligible.

KTM 790 Adventure 2019 - 1KTM 790 Adventure 2019 - 1

KTM 790 Adventure 2019don't think of the Adventure as just another trail bike. KTM is a specialist in machines designed for infinite horizons. This translates into tricks and solutions drawn from the manufacturer's vast experience. Take the air filter: on most bikes (except cross-country and enduro bikes), you have to empty the tank and then open the airbox. On the 790 Adventure, the housing is tucked away under the saddle for easy access and replacement.
Another feature is the fuel tank. We were surprised to see the dual fuel tank leaning against the bike's belly. This is actually the lower part of the tank. By storing fuel so low, the designers have lowered the center of gravity and brought multiple advantages. More agility, more knee room, easier standing up for off-road riding. The manufacturer claims a range of around 450 km, thanks to the 20-liter fuel tank. Enough to cross New Caledonia in one go.

the 790 Adv makes a point of putting its rider in the best possible conditions. This is achieved not only through the optimum organization of seating space (tank design, height-adjustable saddle at 830 or 850 mm), but also through a series of useful features: handlebars with six 30 mm adjustment positions, notched footrests with removable rubber inserts, a pair of handguards and a high bubble. On the R version, the bubble is considerably smaller, to provide a clear field of vision. Just in case, bindings are compatible if you have a preference.

most of today's trails don't believe in undergrowth escapades or body-built surprises. Their 19-inch front wheel betrays this compromise between road and dirt. Not so with the 790 Adventure, which opens with a 21-inch wheel. The step is closed with an 18-inch wheel. Let's check the circles... There's no mistaking it: spoked rims and treaded Avon Trailrider tires mean that this machine's shoes will allow it more extra-vehicular outings than the competition. In just the right proportions; to go further, more off-road, the R version features studded tires and long suspension travel.

KTM 790 Adventure 2019greater than that of our Adventure here, which is already well equipped with 200 mm of travel front and rear. With 23 cm of ground clearance, it's not on the first stone that it's going to dodge the hoof. As WP cannot be dissociated from Austrian machines, it supplies the 43 mm inverted fork and shock absorber, one without adjustment and the other with preload adjustment. The 1509 mm wheelbase should enhance stability. But if the ride gets nervous, a steering damper will help calm front-end reactions. All this is held together by a tubular trellis frame, with the engine as a load-bearing element. Braking is assured by 4-piston calipers mated to two 320 mm discs, with ABS monitoring.

but not just any ABS. The Bosch 9.1MP version, with an active function when cornering, and the option of deactivating the rear when attacking off-road. ABS with multiple intervention levels is almost a standard feature nowadays, as are a good series of riding aids. What's on the Adventure? Traction control, 4 driving modes including off-road, 5-inch TFT color display, ride-by-wire. Plus options such as cruise control, shifter, smartphone connectivity and a Rally Pack to unlock Rally mode and adjust traction control.

KTM 790 Adventure 2019the weight comes as a pleasant surprise, managing to keep it down to 189 kilos. That's about halfway between an old KLX 250 and a 650 V-Strom. Even the seat height is correct, although a little legroom will be required.
With this 790 Adventure, we can feel a confirmation of the privateer side of things. It's the perfect match for the Excursions and the 750 / 850 GS, 800 Tiger, 700 Ténéré, etc... All that's missing is a 390 Adventure, and there's something for everyone.

Trail très bon rapport qualité prix.
French Model 2019
With nearly 20,000 kms of rolling roads and tracks (Parpaillon and others in the Alps), I've found a good trail bike that's easy to ride and easy to handle for a 200-kg motorcycle. The engine is very good, with plenty of torque and power (solo), but lacks suppleness below 3,000 rpm, average fuel consumption 4.5 l/100, with good tires and TT experience, you can also venture out onto our country lanes open to traffic, the shifter (optional) is a plus on small roads and tracks when you swallow several hundred kms in a day, to conclude a good bike with very good value for money. 22000 kms - model 2019 white - owner since May 2022 - used for touring/leisure, solo or duo, in the PACA region, especially in the mountains. Good all-round motorcycle. One of the first "mid-size" bikes on the market, with 03 street/rain/off-road modes and shifter. Can be used extensively as a duo. Lively and light from the outset, the bike has been converted to Pirelli Scorpion STRs (effective off-road on dry and tarmac surfaces, but slightly noisy). Superbly stable and well suspended, despite the non-adjustable front fork. Lacks a bit of torque at the bottom, but the 95hp are there and it revs up nicely. Little engine braking like many KTMs. 400 kms of range. Weak rear brake despite original reinforced hoses. Problem with rear disc, changed for a "petal". RAS Strong, well-built plastics, like metal parts. Front brake master cylinder oozing slightly: cap and diaphragm changed, RAS. No major problems. Huge KTM catalog to accessorize the bike, otherwise good bike. I haven't tried the 890, but it must be even nicer. Dealer servicing not cheap (I think KTM is one of the most expensive). After the warranty, oil changes and servicing can easily be done on your own. Good accessibility, except for a badly placed oil filler cap, but it doesn't consume any. Good bike for those looking for a Swiss Army knife with the "ouache". After two years of use, I'm selling it for a 1290 Super Duke GT, but I'll keep great memories of it. I wouldn't rule out buying another 890 or maybe the new 990 Adventure... I'm not an absolute KTM fan, but you've got to admit that they know how to make bikes for winding (hairy) up hills. French BOB48 Model 2020
23,000 km of pure pleasure. Playground: the roads of Lozère. Agile everywhere, even on dirt roads with a Mitas mount. In town, the only drawback is that it likes to squeeze in everywhere, but below 4,000 rpm, the horses get a bit restless in the stable. Autonomy averages 400 km on a full tank. The saddle reminds you that it's an Austrian, a little hard....but you get used to it, and a break every 2 hours, to be on your best behavior, soon makes you forget this detail. A truly reliable bike, with no major faults. Rating : 5/5
French ticube Model 2020
Bought new in April 2021, my bike now has 12000km. This machine is fantastic but overall reliability is not really up to scratch. You have to know that. Brake problems, fogging of the TFT screen, a master cylinder that oozes a bit, loss of pressure in the tires due to the rims
The only thing that can really be a pain is that the engine is hollow below 4000rpm
As for the rest, I'm really happy with it, because it's as good on the road as it is on the trails, and I can't think of a better compromise ... except maybe the 890!
Rating : 4/5
Well I'm not objective since I've been the happy owner of this katoche for 15 days
Of course it's the best bike around!!!
I just got off a K1300S HP and had an Adventure 990
Compared to these two bikes, the 790 is much lighter and less thirsty. It's lively and easy to handle, and perfect for everyday use. The seat, though hard, is comfortable and the riding position more pleasant than on the BM
The heated grips and cruise control, available only as options, are regrettable, but the ergonomics and TFT screen are superbly user-friendly.
All in all, a real pleasure
Bonne route

Hello,
i'm taking possession of the 2020 ktm 790 adventure next week without having tried the bike!
I had my 2014 BMW K1300 R taken back by the dealership, I think I'm going to change planet, as we're going from 173 HP to 95 HP!
But for the weight and my license it will be much better I think
I've had many BMWs, 1200 RT, R1200R, K1200 R, the best that I'll certainly mourn for a long time is the K1300R.

i find that the 2020 KTM 790 ADVENTURE gives off a lot of heat in the legs and even under the saddle. I've had it for three days and I've only done 100 kms running in at 5000 rpm max, the weather was fine, about 25 degrees!
The dealer tells me it's due to the break-in and that it's all over!
If anyone has noticed this problem, please share your experience.

I've owned one since the end of 2024, and it's a very good bike indeed. My only complaint is that it gives off a lot of heat in the legs. Rating : 5/5

French Model 2019
I took it for a test drive today….
The pros:Pleasant engine that doesn't overheat the legs, even in town, superb handling, great looks (for me), well finished.
The minuses:Saddle a bit hard (a habit with Katoche), no adjustable suspension on the base model, no adjustable bubble either!
I knew it was a smaller bike and less powerful than my 1190 Adv. At 57, I was ready to make concessions, but there are too many to make... The 790 is a very good bike, but for now I'm keeping my 1190

Tried and tested at the KTM dealership in Nantes. Stable but agile, effective handling even on poor surfaces, powerful engine at around 6000 rpm, decent protection. Great homogeneity, high overall comfort. Wooden seat, but it can be changed... Rating : 4/5

I went to see her on Saturday, MAGNIFICENT!
I'm waiting for the Orange days to try it. After an SMT, currently an 1190 Adventure and a 390 DUKE to play with, I'm very much afraid that this 790 will replace my 1190 for its lightness, hoping that it won't disappoint me on the engine side, as the 1190's is really great
