presentation of the FR 750 2024
Mash takes on a whole new challenge with its FR 750. Hitherto accustomed to retro and simplistic machines, the Beaune-based manufacturer now ventures into the highly sought-after niche of entry-level roadsters. The young FR follows in the footsteps of the MT-07, Z 650 and SV 650. Suffice it to say that Mash is stepping out of its "comfort zone", and not just a little.
There's no question here of adopting an air-cooled engine forged with technology from 50 years ago. Instead, the FR 750 adopts a modern, water-cooled, twin-cylinder, 749 cm3 engine with 4 valves per cylinder and a 6-speed gearbox. In terms of performance, it's in the same vein as its competitors, with 74 horsepower at 8,200 rpm. The machine will have to distinguish itself by its character if it hopes to capture the attention of a young public eager for pubescent sensations.
The design of the Mash seven-and-a-half-seat roadster also bears witness to the company's plunge into the new century. The Burgundy firm has gone straight from the Seventies to the age of digital highways. Although neither tense nor sexy, the styling brings a serious breath of modernism to the range. The tank, however, lacks lightness and could do with some work. It holds 18 liters but feels like it's got 50 in the belly.
As ever, Mash is counting on a low price to attract the crowds. Priced at 6,999 euros, the FR 750 is in the same bracket as a CB 500 Hornet, 650 SV or 390 Duke. But the difference is only 600 euros with a Yam MT-07 Pure, one of the stars of the segment - with the reputation that goes with it.
In order to keep prices as low as possible, Mash teamed up with China's Jedi Motors to produce this FR. But as it doesn't want to be singled out because of its origins, it puts forward a few trump cards: Brembo brakes (radial calipers on 300 mm discs), Bosch ABS, Pirelli tires (from the Angel GT), large perimeter frame and aluminum swingarm, inverted fork... but without answering a few questions: suspension make, adjustment possibilities, weight distribution, finish, overall quality .... So many unknowns that can tip the balance. Especially as the FR 750 is no lightweight. 213 kilos fully loaded, that's 20 more than the competition. Almost as much as a 650 V-Strom.
The Mash FR 750 Jedi is due to arrive just before summer. Bridgable in A2, it opens up a new market for the brand, with as many promises as questions.
