You walk past it, around it, in front of it... We let the past guide our eyes towards the passive modernity of this Bonneville. We look for carburetors, an oil puddle, a black jacket, a photo of the Queen - all of which are no longer part of Triumph's present. And lingering on the edge of its stomach, a golden logo takes on its full meaning on this special "Icon" series.
This year's collection pays tribute to a bygone era. This is reflected in a grey and black dress, especially worked on the tank. The piping is hand-drawn, while the brand emblem nods to the enlightened connoisseurs of Coventry*. The Bonneville 900 Icon's dashing logo is the same as that used from 1907 to 1914.
The classic roadster still works on its strong nostalgic presence, making it possible to afford the "myth" for a more accessible price than the 1200. Less punch, less equipment, but 3000 bales less. The Icon finish stands out not only for its decoration, but also for its six-hundred-euro higher price tag, more polished looks and limited availability... in time. Like the Gold Line, Chrome and Stealth collections, the Icon will only be available for one year.
Distinction above all
One year? A flick of the wrist for the Bonneville, whose existence goes back over 60 years. The current 900 generation came out in 2017, bringing its share of evolutions, including an increase in power from 55hp to 65hp.
Retro right down to its spoked rims, it cleverly hides its fuel injection, ride-by-wire, traction control and USB.... socket, but highlights a dual needle speedometer, a pleasant twin, 80 Nm with a well-rounded character, comfort, and almost 230 kgs to be calmed by a single brake disc at each wheel.
