presentation of the XJS 900 Diversion 1996
no technological debauchery, a classic image, the 900 Diversion is first and foremost designed for riding. With a design very similar to that of the 600 (it's easy to confuse the two), it also incorporates the same simple, indestructible technical solutions. A double-cradle frame houses a 4-cylinder engine of traditional design, giving priority to reliability, flexibility and mileage. We'd have liked a little more torque down low, and a more demonstrative engine. What it does offer, and what we really appreciate, is its kilometre-eating vocation at a very competitive price. The cardan shaft (a much-appreciated type of transmission on this type of machine) is virtually unnoticeable when you're riding it, comfort is up to the task of logging long mileage, and the optional saddlebags (and top-case) are ideal for road trips. Pleasant to ride, well-balanced and not at all vicious, it will take you far and wide in complete peace of mind. The dashboard features all the essentials for a tourer, including a clock and fuel gauge. Admittedly, the machine is old, and lacks the temperament and class of a BMW RT (which also happens to be more playful), but it's a motorcycle that costs half as much to provide almost the same services.

The 900 diversion is one hell of a bike. Rating : 5/5 Respond to JMH
Have you changed the cables and hoses for the risers? Can you give me the brand of these risers? Rating : 4/5 Participate in the conversation
It always starts on the first try
Its design is a direct descendant of the motorcycles of the 70s: a large air-cooled four-cylinder engine, fed by four carburetors. It's easy to maintain on your own in the garage. Its tires are inexpensive, as are its consumables
It's a cushy ride, saving fuel to give you a good range, or you can enjoy it at the top of the rev counter, as you like
For travel with a passenger and luggage, you can add the suitcase-topcase kit. The seat is fabulous, and its softness reminds us that this machine is more about comfort than attack
The downside is its weight. It's not made of lightweight materials, and you can feel it when you stop. You have to think carefully when you stop and when you start again, and be careful when maneuvering to avoid lifting it, which is something to be dreaded if you don't have outside help!
The uniquely dark-blue GT version, proposed to the Gendarmerie Nationale in 1999 and not adopted, features a different fairing, two fog lamps, a reinforced frame, a reinforced shock absorber, a comfort seat, two storage compartments, higher handlebars and two 32-liter Krauser cases. Its weight is indicated on the registration document: 265 Kg. Rating : 4/5 Respond to Phil
If you have one...keep it, otherwise you'll regret it. Alfman. Rating : 4/5 Respond to Alf
It's true that the bike is heavy to handle at a standstill and that you have to take the slightest 2 cm pavement head-on, in which case it's better to be strong enough to keep the bike upright. Otherwise, the bike is ideal, with sufficient power for long distances and a comfortable passenger. The engine is quite smooth, with slight vibrations around 4000 rpm, but of short duration. Reliability is unquestionable. A very good investment. What's more, the owners of still-beautiful diversions aren't m'a tu vu in one-season bangers, but rather careful and in love with their DIVs. You've got a YAM 900 DIV, you keep it. It's a real pleasure to ride. ALF. Rating : 4/5 Respond to ALF
I bought my 900 diversion, second hand with 40000km in like new condition
As I was looking for a reliable bike for travel, ride, and not for arsouilles, so it is perfect
In 2019, 16,800km behind the wheel and nothing but happiness, thank you Mr Yamaha, the more you ride, the more you want to ride
I've never had a breakdown, okay, I've always ridden Yamaha and I've never had a breakdown
But it's true that the 900 is so versatile and sturdy that it's in a class of its own
Happy riding. Rating : 5/5 Respond to pajo71

11,000 kms done
Admittedly, engine not very powerful, but reliable machine, not expensive in maintenance. Starts in all weathers. Pleasant to handle in town. 1 slightly heavy machine, but with 1 cardan shaft. Not possible to have your cake and eat it too.
So very satisfied and to be recommended, but not too much so that there are still some on the second-hand market. Bonne route à tous

Peut-être que t\'arsouilles un peu trop, pour moi je ne dépasse que rarement les 3500 t/mn et always - de 6L et sur route à 90 kh 5,4 L après si tu rentres dedans inevitément ça consomme
Sincerely Alain86n Rating : 4/5 Participate in the conversation
The only downside is the weight at standstill.
Nevertheless, I'm totally satisfied. Rating : 5/5 Respond to Mc.Cormick
One regret is that the bubble is too short, but it's easy to change.
In town, it's a little heavy and tends to get a bit hot, but as soon as you're on the road, everything's just fine.
Admittedly, the design is a bit old-fashioned and it doesn't have ABS, traction control or cruise control...., but you've got a real motorcycle between your legs. Rating : 4/5 Respond to Ptitman
big reliable solid simple comfortable peaceful but powerful
a true little donkey, loyal and courageous, with a carefree cardan shaft
no show-offs no fun no chi chi no bling bling nothing but the useful and practical
it's great to have a motorcycle whose quality and load capacity nobody knows about
and so much the better for those who love it
it's powerful enough to sweat between two speed cameras
and its noise is hoarse and retro
not to mention the top case and suitcases that turn it into a reliable bmw, unlike the proud bavarians and their rich drivers...
on this point, its modest price distinguishes it from the elitist tariffs of the munich firm
it's so good to drive old-fashioned, with the silky sound of a sturdy four-cylinder engine, without the shadow of electronics or absurd pollution control
no salad of sustainable development it was ahead of its time
20 years ahead
it respects the planet in the sense that you don't change it, you keep it, and because of its fuel consumption, which often drops below 5 liters !!!
the 900xjs isn't a plastic motorcycle with absurd shapes and anecdotal, unsightly additions
contemporary motorcycles are ugly and similar: no more rear end, no more nose, no more saddle, no more space... no more soul!
so yes, the xjs 900 has one; it offers us the chance to go anywhere without constraints
soon we won't be able to ride ...
limited to 80 or 50 or 30 or not at all in Paris for bikes built before 2000 ...
the xjs is an anti-delusion
it embodies a form of peaceful resistance to the invisible frontier that separates the wise and lucid motorcyclist from madame hidalgo
the delirious, plastic-coated euphoria of motorcycle dealerships, worthy of car dealerships, no longer concerns us as a diversion
don't buy them, leave them to us
and that's how enthusiasts recognize each other
it's a supreme luxury to be able to leave your bike unlocked, knowing that nobody wants it
faithfully waiting for us
it ...

I've been wanting to switch to the FJR 1300 for 2 years, but I'm finding it very hard to give up my '98 900 div.
Rating : 5/5 Participate in the conversation
In short, it's not for everyone to prefer reliability to show-offs, except for those whose pleasure in reliability goes above and beyond their equals. Before my 3 divs, I did 207,000 km in 100 rt. By the way, the div took me all the way to the North Cape, and even at -20 it starts up Rating : 5/5 Participate in the conversation
How do you say "wrong horse, wrong rider"?
for my part, the only fault I can find with the 900 XJS is that it lacks a 6th gear, for the rest it's a rock-solid machine

Apart from the exhaust system, which I had to have replaced last year (due to corrosion), it's an excellent machine for a quiet biker, with which I've never had any problems, even after long breaks from riding due to long, harsh winters.
In short, it's a joy to ride.

I've owned a 1996 900 Diversion for 7 years now, and it's a joy to ride. Apart from the weight, it's a machine that meets the needs of riders who don't have too much money, because it's powerful, sturdy, economical and, aesthetically speaking, a machine that looks good. Turned on all sides, it remains beautiful. As for me, I'm on a road 2 and there's plenty to enjoy. I also recommend this bike to young bikers, but you have to be careful with it, because when you ask, it gives

Current owner of a 1200 venture, I have to resign myself to sell it because following a knee operation, it is now too heavy for me. I'd like to replace it with a 900 diversion, but according to several reviews, its weight is also a handicap. What do you think? If not, what bike would you recommend to overcome this weight problem (a 650 Deauville?)
Thanks for your help. Rating : 5/5 Respond to schweppes
of abstinence from motorcycling, following an accident, and I've found it to be a bike full of good points, and its excess weight, which you get used to very quickly compared to the year it came out, has very few faults, and with a good set of road smart tires, for my part, it's going to give me nothing but happiness. Rating : 5/5 Respond to deltcom
Apart from a few minor teething problems (a few parts changed on recall from Yamaha, the cracked fork head fairing also taken under warranty), a weak first set of Bridgestone tires and prematurely worn brake pads, I've had nothing to report for 12 years, apart from an electronic ignition failure after 5 years.
I'm complaining about a few vibrations around 4,000 rpm, and a seat that's a bit tight for long rides. When it comes to power, you know where its limits are when you buy it, but personally I find it quite sufficient
This is a sturdy, puncture-proof machine, which always picks up the pace, remains surprisingly clean and beautiful, the chromework is as good as new, and it's great fun to ride, whether solo or in a duo, sober and supple, which doesn't prevent more aggressive bursts of power if you want to open the throttle wide
I'm regularly eyeing the FJR 1300, but... the charm of the Diversion is still there, and I don't think I'll be disgusted with it for a long time
One hell of a good buy

35,000 km on a 900 div GT since June 2003. positive results. economical, comfortable, robust. alone or with two + 160 liters of luggage, short or long trips, sun or rain, city or highway ... it can do it all
it's true that its weight is surprising at first, but you soon forget about it.
yamaha has just released the 125 YBR, 2 years after discontinuing the SR (cheap, foolproof 125). let's hope that yam's successor to the 900 div is on the drawing board. the 1300 fjr is too expensive (like BMW) and the other road bikes don't have gimbals (apart from the deauville, which I don't like)
in the meantime, i'm keeping mine

good finish, reliable, economical, etc. Just one little problem: for the first 3 or 4,000 kms, I found it very or even too heavy. For my part 3rd XJ, 650, 750 then 900. All 3 used from 80,000km, up to 200,000 km with original engine..
Cons hard seat, driving position, lacks a 6th for the highway
For power, silence, fuel consumption, range, smoothness and so on..
Its weight is a handicap when stopped, but very useful at high speeds
I don't own a car, but I drive a lot (since July 14th 2005: 20,000km). They've all been fitted with top-cases (3x42l), and yes, that's what you need to travel
Longest trip made with the 900 in 1 day 1200km, only gene, the saddle
Otherwise, a very good range of economical, mileage-guzzling bikes. Sincerely and have a good trip! Rating : 5/5 Respond to jef

too hard for my taste, it becomes almost uncomfortable after 300 kilometers....
otherwise, it's a real pleasure to ride, and from a mechanical point of view, it's reputed to be "puncture-proof". it's a shame that yam has decided to stop selling it. it's been brought up to date with improvements.....tant pis!!!! Rating : 5/5 Respond to seb
