presentation of the XJS 900 Diversion 1998

no technological debauchery, a classic image, the 900 Diversion is first and foremost designed for riding. With a design very similar to that of the 600 (it's easy to confuse the two), it also incorporates the same simple, indestructible technical solutions. A double-cradle frame houses a 4-cylinder engine of traditional design, giving priority to reliability, flexibility and mileage. We'd have liked a little more torque down low, and a more demonstrative engine. What it does offer, and what we really appreciate, is its kilometre-eating vocation at a very competitive price. The cardan shaft (a much-appreciated type of transmission on this type of machine) is virtually unnoticeable when you're riding it, comfort is up to the task of logging long mileage, and the optional saddlebags (and top-case) are ideal for road trips. Pleasant to ride, well-balanced and not at all vicious, it will take you far and wide in complete peace of mind. The dashboard features all the essentials for a tourer, including a clock and fuel gauge. Admittedly, the machine is old, and lacks the temperament and class of a BMW RT (which also happens to be more playful), but it's a motorcycle that costs half as much to provide almost the same services.

Excellente 900 diversion
I bought my beautiful 2002 in 2019 with 28000km of original in good condition but maintained to a minimum by its first 2 owners to date in 2024 and 52000km I took the time and invested to bring it technically up to date and erase its 22 years. Bearings, intake pipes and all seals, plus all valve adjustments and overhauls, ultrasonic cleaning of the 4 carburettors, and a few improvements: comfort seat, heated grips, handlebar riser, vintage Yamaha high bubble. Add to that brake discs, avia hoses, road 6 tires, and you've got a machine that's been transformed. And I'm forgetting... that's a purchase of €2200 and around €4000 of maintenance and upgrades. It goes without saying that the technical inspection was 0 defects. It might seem crazy to spend so much, but compared to an equivalent new machine with cardan shaft, 90hp, 5s to 0/100km/h, a range of 400km, super comfort. You can spend a minimum of 12 to 15,000€. Heavy? no ABS? I started out on a k2 honda 125 in '73 and haven't missed it since.
The 900 diversion is one hell of a bike.

Hello, I've just read your review of the xjs diversion. You have mounted handlebar risers.
Have you changed the cables and hoses for the risers? Can you give me the brand of these risers?

With an extension 20mm high and 16mm back, there's no need to modify or change anything, not even the routing of cables and hoses. Just release them from the serflexes, readjust and reattach with new serflexes. Rating : 5/5

This is my second diversion, and the second one I equipped with handlebar riser, high bubble and lower fairing. And now, even with the suitcases, it goes everywhere. Very comfortable and with a good range, it's great - too bad you have to pass the technical inspection. Rating : 4/5

French KAZO Model 1999
On a very "rhythmic" ride in the Vosges with my MT 10 SP, I followed a bike equipped with full luggage through a pass, ridden by a Swiss couple. I was with two friends, and when I say that I followed this couple, I mean that to overtake them would have been pretentious, even risky, as the rider wound up cleanly at a sustained and respectable pace. At the top of the pass, taking advantage of a stop sign, I was able to get up to speed with this bike, which I identified as a 900 Diversion. It was a revelation, and as soon as I got home I bought myself a 1998 model, with which I've had some of my best road trips. It's my second machine, my good old friend, I use it every day, always ready to go, docile, comfortable, sober, with the range of a camel, in short a delight! Strangely enough, it earns me far more compliments than my more recent cars, from passers-by (often old-timers) to whom it evokes fond memories; I'm crazy about it! Rating : 5/5
Hi bikers, I've had a 900 div since 2003, 80,000 km, I wanted to change model, after thinking about it, what's the point, it starts in all weathers, very economical, 500 km on it without tiring, as for the weight, of course you have to be careful, so I'm keeping my old companion, no divorce on the agenda, biker friendships, let's stay safe Rating : 4/5

Here I am, an old retiree in Asia, and a 2002 900 Diversion is for sale at $1,500. My back is shot after more than 40 years of motorcycling. I had a GSX 750 (rectangular headlight and chain), and my back didn't hurt: That's how it is with the Diversion, because my lumbar vertebrae are really in kit form! Rating : 5/5
I bought my 900 Diversion mill 2002 in 2019 it had 28 000 km, we can not say that the 2 previous owners have driven a lot... I've done 20,000 km since then in 3 years. It's a great machine, very economical, comfortable and still has 89 horsepower, which is more than enough for long journeys, its preferred terrain being the departmental and national roads. For annual maintenance, oil change with a good oil, motul type 7100 10w40 + oil and air filters and 4 spark plugs for a total of 85€, easy to do yourself, fuel consumption 5.2l/100km Only SP98. On LBC, you'll find used machines with 35,000 km, preferably post-2000, for around €2500, and you'll need to change all the rubber seals, such as forks, 4 intake pipes, if they haven't already been done, which you can buy at half price from getor.we'll also do a complete overhaul of the brake calipers and two good road 5-type tires for better agility, as well as the wheel bearings and conicals for the steering column to eliminate any steering wheel tracking. We'll finish off the preparation with a second-hand high bubble, for a total cost of €1,500 to get her out of the woods and into a practically brand-new super bike that will take you over 100,000km. You'll quickly fall in love with this bike and wonder why you didn't buy it sooner, especially when passers-by stop to look at the chrome-plated pots and finned engine from another era, or when you're winding big curves in great comfort. French Phil Model 2000
Its great quality is its seriousness, but for some it's also its weakness
It always starts on the first try
Its design is a direct descendant of the motorcycles of the 70s: a large air-cooled four-cylinder engine, fed by four carburetors. It's easy to maintain on your own in the garage. Its tires are inexpensive, as are its consumables
It's a cushy ride, saving fuel to give you a good range, or you can enjoy it at the top of the rev counter, as you like
For travel with a passenger and luggage, you can add the suitcase-topcase kit. The seat is fabulous, and its softness reminds us that this machine is more about comfort than attack
The downside is its weight. It's not made of lightweight materials, and you can feel it when you stop. You have to think carefully when you stop and when you start again, and be careful when maneuvering to avoid lifting it, which is something to be dreaded if you don't have outside help!

The uniquely dark-blue GT version, proposed to the Gendarmerie Nationale in 1999 and not adopted, features a different fairing, two fog lamps, a reinforced frame, a reinforced shock absorber, a comfort seat, two storage compartments, higher handlebars and two 32-liter Krauser cases. Its weight is indicated on the registration document: 265 Kg.

Hello, I bought a 900 Diversion 2001 a few months ago, after owning several recent motorcycles, but doing less I still wanted to keep a 2-wheeler. I'm very, very happy with it, it's an incredible machine. It's not equipped with luggage and I'm having a lot of trouble finding what I need (top case + side cases). Could you give me some advice? Thanks in advance... Rating : 5/5
Super Moto
Made for budget-conscious riders, passengers don't have a hard time of it, even on long trips. The weight at standstill requires a bit of concentration, but it all depends on your muscles (there are much heavier bikes out there). Light vibrations around 4,000 rpm could have been better filtered out, but are forgotten at cruising speed. It's by no means old-fashioned, given the many neo-retro models back in production. If fuel consumption rises, there's something wrong: fuel quality, spark plugs, air filter, etc. An overhaul is in order.
If you have one...keep it, otherwise you'll regret it. Alfman.

A bit heavy, but reliable, never had a problem, good acceleration, easy to handle, cardan shaft transmission, too good, a glass of oil from time to time and off you go again. I love my machine, even if it's not a real eye-catcher in terms of looks. Good machine. Rating : 5/5

Hello everyone, I've just bought a 900diiversion from December 1998, I find that it consumes quite a lot, I'm doing 10 liters 5 /100, is this normal or do I need to do a carburettor adjustment because I'm driving really cool, plus my rev counter is constantly going back and forth from 0 to 10, if anyone can give me some information, that would be great, thank you in advance and have a good trip! very good bike very powerful just a little heavy and reliable . Rating : 4/5
Hello everyone.
It's true that the bike is heavy to handle at a standstill and that you have to take the slightest 2 cm pavement head-on, in which case it's better to be strong enough to keep the bike upright. Otherwise, the bike is ideal, with sufficient power for long distances and a comfortable passenger. The engine is quite smooth, with slight vibrations around 4000 rpm, but of short duration. Reliability is unquestionable. A very good investment. What's more, the owners of still-beautiful diversions aren't m'a tu vu in one-season bangers, but rather careful and in love with their DIVs. You've got a YAM 900 DIV, you keep it. It's a real pleasure to ride. ALF.

Hello biker friends
I bought my 900 diversion, second hand with 40000km in like new condition
As I was looking for a reliable bike for travel, ride, and not for arsouilles, so it is perfect
In 2019, 16,800km behind the wheel and nothing but happiness, thank you Mr Yamaha, the more you ride, the more you want to ride
I've never had a breakdown, okay, I've always ridden Yamaha and I've never had a breakdown
But it's true that the 900 is so versatile and sturdy that it's in a class of its own
Happy riding.

After selling my xjr 1300 in 2002, today at 62 years old I've just bought a 2002 900 DIV with 28,000 km in exceptional condition. i'd forgotten on the 1st try that these beasts are so heavy to stop, but after taking great care for the first 300 km, I'm back to the joy of winding round corners and whistling into my helmet. What a great touring bike this 900 is. In its Galaxy blue, I agree with the other reviewers: it's a real motorcycle, with its 4-cylinder fins and rustproof stainless steel! It starts right up, is well tuned, and has no gaps in the rev range. At 265kg, it's no beginner's bike, but it's easy to ride and responds nicely to its rider's impulses. It's in tune with the times, adapted to today's overcrowded traffic conditions and speed limits that didn't exist in the 70s. At 2,000 francs, it's a great, sustainable purchase, to use a fashionable term. Rating : 5/5

11,000 kms done
Admittedly, engine not very powerful, but reliable machine, not expensive in maintenance. Starts in all weathers. Pleasant to handle in town. 1 slightly heavy machine, but with 1 cardan shaft. Not possible to have your cake and eat it too.
So very satisfied and to be recommended, but not too much so that there are still some on the second-hand market. Bonne route à tous

I bought a new 900 Diversion xjs freeway in July 1999 and I'm still riding it, even though I've just acquired a 2015 1300 FJR with 31500 km on the odometer. The Diversion is certainly showing its age, but it's still so comfortable and practical to use. Its power is more than enough to make you lose your points! Two defects for me at the end of 80,000 km in 20 years, the fork too soft which slams on the shit called French road network and the collector 4 in 2 which melts like snow in the sun ... I repaired with stainless vacuum cleaner hose! As for the rest, my Yamaha dealer calls his mechanic every time he visits because he has the impression that it's new! With its 2 suitcases, I go on vacation every year as a duo with one of my sons, and it's always HAPPY! Now it's time for the FJR, but Granny's staying at home and I intend to stretch her legs regularly! Rating : 5/5

I bought mine last year, and since then, apart from the tires which were tired, no mechanical problems, just the gas gauge which doesn't work any more. Otherwise, it's a great machine, with no frills, but with all the essentials. I've been riding motorcycles for 35 years, with Guzzi, Honda, BMW and Suzuki. in fact, it's the one I prefer, the only complaint being its weight, I was caught out at the start of a manoeuvre at 2 km/h and had to eat... Another fault is its lighting, with full headlights I can barely see at 10 metres, so if anyone knows a trick I'd be interested. Bonne route à tous les diversionnistes ✌✌ Rating : 4/5

After having had the chance to sit on the saddle of mythical motorcycles such as the CB900 bol d'or, the Z650 and 900 of the 80s, the XT500, the 850 california and so on. I'm the proud owner of 2 XJ900Ss, one from 1998 (100,000km) and the other from 2001 (20,000km), and I've been riding them for 15 years now, and I can't think of any other bike that would inspire me enough to abandon my faithful grannies, other than taking over an old one from the 80s. No breakdowns, no maintenance (well, what's needed, of course), 1200km in one day to reach the south of Spain without a second thought, great comfort and a bike that's easy to ride. Its only fault, which everyone claims, is its weight when stationary. But what's that compared with the reliability of its drivetrain and the solidity of its engine? Rating : 5/5

For cruising in complete peace of mind, this bike is simply perfect for daily commutes and lots and lots of riding.
One regret is that the bubble is too short, but it's easy to change.
In town, it's a little heavy and tends to get a bit hot, but as soon as you're on the road, everything's just fine.
Admittedly, the design is a bit old-fashioned and it doesn't have ABS, traction control or cruise control...., but you've got a real motorcycle between your legs.

brave bike
big reliable solid simple comfortable peaceful but powerful
a true little donkey, loyal and courageous, with a carefree cardan shaft
no show-offs no fun no chi chi no bling bling nothing but the useful and practical
it's great to have a motorcycle whose quality and load capacity nobody knows about
and so much the better for those who love it
it's powerful enough to sweat between two speed cameras
and its noise is hoarse and retro
not to mention the top case and suitcases that turn it into a reliable bmw, unlike the proud bavarians and their rich drivers...
on this point, its modest price distinguishes it from the elitist tariffs of the munich firm
it's so good to drive old-fashioned, with the silky sound of a sturdy four-cylinder engine, without the shadow of electronics or absurd pollution control
no salad of sustainable development it was ahead of its time
20 years ahead
it respects the planet in the sense that you don't change it, you keep it, and because of its fuel consumption, which often drops below 5 liters !!!
the 900xjs isn't a plastic motorcycle with absurd shapes and anecdotal, unsightly additions
contemporary motorcycles are ugly and similar: no more rear end, no more nose, no more saddle, no more space... no more soul!
so yes, the xjs 900 has one; it offers us the chance to go anywhere without constraints
soon we won't be able to ride ...
limited to 80 or 50 or 30 or not at all in Paris for bikes built before 2000 ...
the xjs is an anti-delusion
it embodies a form of peaceful resistance to the invisible frontier that separates the wise and lucid motorcyclist from madame hidalgo
the delirious, plastic-coated euphoria of motorcycle dealerships, worthy of car dealerships, no longer concerns us as a diversion
don't buy them, leave them to us
and that's how enthusiasts recognize each other
it's a supreme luxury to be able to leave your bike unlocked, knowing that nobody wants it
faithfully waiting for us

150,000 km on the odometer. 22,000 km/year: indestructible. It's a bitumen eater. The bike isn't made for cruising at 90/110 km/h. The fuel tank offers a comfortable range. The only drawback is a hole in the throttle that can cause the bike to stall and fall over. My next bike? A 900 Diversion. Rating : 5/5

hello, i bought 1 lot of 3 yamaha xj 900 s (diversion) for 2000â'¬, the 1st one had the gearbox neiman front and rear calipers hs, the 2nd one had 1 broken connecting rod although its oil level was good as well as all the seized calipers and for the 3rd one, the carburettors ramp and the neiman front and rear calipers seized up ! not to mention the exhaust silencers, which were all eaten away by rust, even though they were made of stainless steel! i managed to salvage 2 of the 3 at the cost of expensive labor, but the 3rd was destroyed for spare parts (I'd have been better off buying 1 other model in working order). What a waste! Now I'll have to sell them at a loss, because at 1m68 tall, I can't even ride them, the tips of my feet don't even touch the ground! Rating : 1/5

I also like the range, which is not insignificant! a bit heavy to maneuver, but you can't have everything if you want a minimum of space. good brakes, nice handling. it's a good compromise between quality, road and money

It's true that the bike isn't exactly sexy, but if you want to go far for a long time, the cardan shaft is just the thing! It's true that it lacks a 6th gear for the freeway, but it's not bad. However, when it comes to value for money, you can't beat it...

Apart from the exhaust system, which I had to have replaced last year (due to corrosion), it's an excellent machine for a quiet biker, with which I've never had any problems, even after long breaks from riding due to long, harsh winters.
In short, it's a joy to ride.

Hi everyone,
I've owned a 1996 900 Diversion for 7 years now, and it's a joy to ride. Apart from the weight, it's a machine that meets the needs of riders who don't have too much money, because it's powerful, sturdy, economical and, aesthetically speaking, a machine that looks good. Turned on all sides, it remains beautiful. As for me, I'm on a road 2 and there's plenty to enjoy. The 900 diversion is a fairly heavy bike, and especially one with a lot of torque, so to start with, it's not the most reassuring thing. Even at 61...

So I'd advise you to take a more modest view, get the hang of it for a few months, and then get your kicks with this 900 diversion.

of abstinence from motorcycling, following an accident, and I've found it to be a bike full of good points, and its excess weight, which you get used to very quickly compared to the year it came out, has very few faults, and with a good set of road smart tires, for my part, it's going to give me nothing but happiness.

I bought my Diversion 900 in October 1994, which could only be seen in photos at the time, making it probably one of the very first to arrive in Belgium

Apart from a few minor teething problems (a few parts changed on recall from Yamaha, the cracked fork head fairing also taken under warranty), a weak first set of Bridgestone tires and prematurely worn brake pads, I've had nothing to report for 12 years, apart from an electronic ignition failure after 5 years.

I'm complaining about a few vibrations around 4,000 rpm, and a seat that's a bit tight for long rides. When it comes to power, you know where its limits are when you buy it, but personally I find it quite sufficient

This is a sturdy, puncture-proof machine, which always picks up the pace, remains surprisingly clean and beautiful, the chromework is as good as new, and it's great fun to ride, whether solo or in a duo, sober and supple, which doesn't prevent more aggressive bursts of power if you want to open the throttle wide

I'm regularly eyeing the FJR 1300, but... the charm of the Diversion is still there, and I don't think I'll be disgusted with it for a long time

One hell of a good buy

Handicapped on the right arm, I've converted my '96 900 div with all the controls on the left and it's nothing but bliss: phenomenal torque, acceleration that doesn't rip my arms off and a lot of fun to ride a motorcycle with a cardan shaft.on the minus side, I tend to find the gearbox a bit hard, the seat a bit wearing after a long ride, and please advise me on the right tires and pressure, as I'm currently on Michelin macadam and it's operation suicide. I've had my motorcycle licence since December 19 (at the age of 46) and bought a '97 900 diversion with 78,000km. I had a good overhaul at 80000km and fitted more efficient air hoses. I've done 3000km with it and I find that apart from the weight, which is a bit surprising at first (after the ER5, it's a change), I think it's really an excellent bike for logging kilometers. Supple and comfortable, I can only regret the vibrations around 3800/4000 rpm. Hi everyone
For my part 3rd XJ, 650, 750 then 900. All 3 used from 80,000km, up to 200,000 km with original engine..
Cons hard seat, driving position, lacks a 6th for the highway
For power, silence, fuel consumption, range, smoothness and so on..
Its weight is a handicap when stopped, but very useful at high speeds
I don't own a car, but I drive a lot (since July 14th 2005: 20,000km). They've all been fitted with top-cases (3x42l), and yes, that's what you need to travel
Longest trip made with the 900 in 1 day 1200km, only gene, the saddle
Otherwise, a very good range of economical, mileage-guzzling bikes. Sincerely and have a good trip!

too hard for my taste, it becomes almost uncomfortable after 300 kilometers....

I've been driving an XJ900S since November 2003. It's true that at first its weight gave me a bit of stress when manoeuvring, but you just have to get used to it. Otherwise, it's great, not greedy (gasoline + or - 6.5l & maintenance), comfortable with an engine that starts to show character from 5500trm. Having owned a 1,900 Diversion for the past 6 months, I have mixed feelings about it. I'm 25, it's my first big cube and I find it particularly heavy to handle. Apart from that, fuel consumption is very decent when riding cool, but strong when opening up a bit. Good range with its 24L fuel tank. But really, its weight is a handicap! You have to go very long distances not to feel it. If I have to change, I'm thinking of going for a 650 V-Strom: well-equipped, lighter, tough. I ride an '88 900XJ, just like my grandmother! At the time, this machine was classed as 'sportivo-gt', i.e. 98 real HP; not bad... And after 72,000 km, there's still a hell of a lot of it left, all the while demonstrating the traditional qualities: solidity, reliability, economy, low fuel consumption if you're reasonable. You can do anything with it, including a very, very decent duo. The only drawbacks are the high weight and poor handling at low speeds. The worst thing is that I can't find anything to replace it in current production! We've got to stop this 'hippo weight + elephant price + high running costs' nonsense. I've even had the bold idea of wanting to restore it, which just goes to show my attachment to this great machine. Rating : 5/5

What's more, equipped with a high bubble and full luggage, it's a real GT for weekends and vacations, not to mention low-maintenance thanks to its cardan shaft. In short, this bike is a joy to ride.
