presentation of the XSR 900 GP Yard Built - Back to the Paddock - 2024
It's been a while since the Yard Buit project showed its face. Launched at the end of 2012, this customization "branch" encouraged by Yamaha has given birth to over sixty preparations.
With the new XSR 900 GP, Yamaha Motor Europe has been inspired to pay tribute to an iconic GP figure: Randy Mamola.
For its Back to the Paddock project, YME is spotlighting the whimsical American rider, a 13-time 500cc winner, and the famous 1987 YZR 500. Using the XSR 900 GP as a base, YME's design evokes the heyday of 500cc racing, drawing on the 1987 machine that helped fan-favorite Mamola score three wins and nine podiums in a single year, and finish second in the premier class.
In keeping with the Yard Built tradition, no cutting or welding was allowed on the frame of the bike, which was fitted with parts and accessories to demonstrate the ease with which Yamaha Sport Heritage models can be customized. The XSR 900 GP "Mamola" is fitted with the elegant Racer pack, which adds a color-matched engine cover, a rear rack and an Akrapovic exhaust that reinforces the nostalgic feel of the 80s.
YME's Mamola has been painted in red, white and yellow, a classic Yamaha color that still attracts as much attention as it did almost 40 years ago. The XSR 900 GP was painted by Robert Lammers, who was delighted to be commissioned to create this stunning livery.
In addition to the paintwork, Fasters Sons and Yamaha stickers were cleverly used in place of sponsor logos, and the American flag was placed exactly as on Randy's bike to maintain the nostalgia. Eddy Speelman is the man behind the stickers and, like Robert, he was very enthusiastic about taking on the project.
Yamaha Motor Europe's "Mamola" is one of many "Back to the Paddock" bikes to have been created, and is a benchmark among retro-inspired projects. It will be presented at the Wheels & Waves festival in Biarritz, France, from June 12 to 16.
