presentation of the SR 400 2014

what would you think if, tomorrow, you could find a Renault 4L, a Peugeot 205, a VCR... brand new from the factory?!? Yamaha offers us something like that, with the return of a famous model from the late 70s. The SR 400 hasn't aged a day, and since revival is always in fashion, there's no reason to miss out.

mind you, this is not a neo-retro interpretation like the BMW 1200 Nine T or a Vintage like the Guzzi V7 or Triumph Thuxton. No, the 2014 SR 400 is virtually the same as its 1978 ancestor. And for good reason: it's not a genuine novelty, but a re-introduction to the French market. The SR 400 has never ceased to be sold in Japan, where it is a star, all the more so as it lends itself readily to any type of preparation. Only a few essential evolutions have been added over the decades. Fuel injection has replaced carburetors, and a catalytic converter has been installed in the muffler. But the bottom line is this: this is not a modern motorcycle with retro styling... it's a retro motorcycle sold today as it was 10, 20, 35 years ago!

the single-cylinder engine derived from the 500 XT is virtually unchanged from its early days. With dimensions of 87 x 67.2 mm, it favors torque and responsiveness at low revs. The technical data sheet looks like something out of an old-fashioned catalog unearthed from a great-uncle's treasure chest. 2 valves, 1 ACT, a compression ratio of 8.5:1; technology in the Giscard d'Estaing style. An effort has been made to improve torque with a larger airbox and a larger 47 mm intake valve. To top it all off, the engine starts as it did in the old days: with a kick. Nostalgic fans will love it. Younger riders will have to learn how to kick, find the compression point (there's a telltale on the cylinder head to make the job easier), use the decompressor or enjoy the pleasure of getting a kick back in the calf.

Yamaha SR 400 2014 - 1Yamaha SR 400 2014 - 1

yes, yes, it's an original chassis (not to be confused with original) that holds the SR 400 for you. A steel semi-double cradle frame, with the engine oil running through the main vertical tube. Suspension consists of a conventional fork and 2 side shocks. The SR 400 also retains its 18-inch spoked wheels, front disc brake and rear drum brake.

at the time, the SR 400 was considered a utility vehicle. With vintage fashion, chrome and retro charm, the SR 400 became a Sport Heritage and made a remarkable comeback... even though it's still the same type of bike, with a ridiculous 23 horsepower, forgotten technology and a design that hasn't changed a bit since Claude François disappeared. And that's why it's going to please, and all those who go out of their way to vocalize that "it was better before" will have a perfect example at their disposal. In fact, with the SR 400, it's not really a motorcycle you're buying yourself, it's its soul, and the pleasure of simple things.

Recall campaign:

At the end of October 2018 , Yamaha initiated a recall campaign for its SR 400s due to a concern with the oil return hose. Due to insufficient tightening torque of the nut securing this hose, there was a possibility of engine oil leaking from the tightening nut.

Machines concerned:

- SR400 models 2014 - 2016 (2RD1/2RDB) with serial numbers between RH051 0000301 and RH051 0002787.

A total of 464 machines on the French market.

Customers owning these machines have been notified by registered mail to have the work carried out free of charge.

Mythique

Sr 400 Yamaha: myth, antiquity, or a survivor of the good old days of rock and roll, the Beatles, the relaxed life without laptops or computers, in short, the good old days, when we took our time, the time to listen, to share, to be compassionate, etc.......

It's a beautiful bike, beautiful steel, spokes, flashy colors, especially like mine in the 60 th edition (usa-yamaha). Yes, some will say that you have to be crazy to buy this granny for 6,000 euros, and yet she gives you your money's worth, not for the power of course (26.7 hp), which is the power of a good modern 250, but for its secret, which lies elsewhere, in the spirit, the rediscovery of the sensations of yesteryear, without stress, taking the time to feel what modern motorcycles have lost, the little something that only machines from a time almost forgotten can give. Who still remembers the cromwell, the barbour, the 750 h2, the cbx, the 1300 kawa, the 750 Benelli with the 6 pots?............ It's timeless, seductive, bewitching, it'll take you calmly on the road to simple pleasures. It's a treat to savor, a pleasure for the eyes with its chrome, its curves, its truly vintage style, not a copy, a true vintage. Happy trails to all.

I own a scrambler... This bike is extraordinary, you can play with the selector, the sound takes us back to the late 70's when the big mono unleashed passions... You don't need a fighter jet to get away from it all...
It's "La Grande Evasion" on the handlebars... I've ridden them all: European, HD, Japanese, Indian, super-sports, enduro, custom, etc...

YAMAHA 400 SR EFI 30 HP
French Model 2014
An excellent, detailed essay and a very objective view of this bike, we mustn't fall into the trap of comparing it with today's bikes, or even neo-retros.
The SR400 is a basic, utilitarian bike from the 1970s that has naturally achieved Vintage Motorcycle status.
On price, I'm with Rhimi, even if the fact is that this bike sells for â'¬4,500 in Japan.
You have two options: the second-hand one, which is bound to be well cared for and pampered, or the patient one of finding a dealer who doesn't know how to sell this kind of bike.
I opted for the second solution at 5,120â'¬, which, given the distance to Japan and the price of some SRs from the last century, seems to me to be a coherent, or at least acceptable, price.
Performance-wise, this Yamaha 400 SR EFI is biblically simple to unleash, and I did say "unleash", not turn into a missile.
The first thing to do is to remove the castrating stopper from the fuel injection throttle to return it to Japanese 27 hp DIN configuration, and the four nags stashed at the back of the stable join their counterparts for bucolic rides.
The second step is to replace the asthmatic exhaust muffler, which weighs as much as a dead donkey, with a real exhaust.
And I mean a real exhaust, not a hollow tube whose din blurs the listener's experience.
In this case, there aren't thirty-six solutions, and it's best to opt for a Japanese exhaust system of the Peyton, WM or Daytona style, preferably EFI-approved with a small catalytic converter.
And last but not least, the AIS system, which is useless on this bike, must be removed or neutralized (as the case may be).
Melody-wise, it's between 87 and 92 db at maximum, but it's round and pretty, and no one will look at you like you're the last of the miscreants.
And when it comes to performance, 3 or even 4 more drunks are guaranteed on the bill.
So, all in all, with just thirty Taishu-uma in the stable, it becomes a particularly endearing bike, lively and torquey enough to take on the hills.

I'm an old and experienced tarmo. I ride a Ducati but I wanted to replace my scoot (work commute) with this SR that I've loved for years in a 500. That's it, I've got it, I've ridden it: it's beautiful (obviously), it makes a nice noise (admittedly a little dampened by the pot, but hey...), the engine is very torquey (I'm still breaking it in, riding between 3,000 and 3,500 rpm), the power rise is very linear, and it grips well - even on hills! So far, I can't find anything but good things about it, and I'm really enjoying riding this SR400. It does have one (minor) flaw: I find the saddle a little stiff for long distances (but you can order saddles with more padding). As for the number plate, it's an eyesore (but Yamaha has nothing to do with it): I'm going to fit it with a small type-approved number plate designed for "collector" bikes. To be continued. Hello G29
My SR is nearing the 1500km mark on the pretty little roads of Avallon. I've changed the original mirrors for round ones with more comfortable vision, I can see better; I've fitted a luggage rack and 2 SPORFABRIC R50 metal back panniers. It fits like a glove. All that's left is to find a little wind-jumper for fun.
Its 170kg make it very comfortable at 80 9O 100 on our country roads. When stationary, it's easy to handle thanks to its low position. Fuel consumption 4l to 4.5l/100 sp95. Very good braking. Acceleration is quiet, but sufficient for me. Comfort is good on my 30 to 100km rides, even for the passenger. The SR lets you enjoy the scenery with your nose to the wind, it's a spirit, 3 kicks and you're off! Now that it's unbridled, the noise of the mono is audible but subdued. At 64, I was looking for a pleasure bike with a nice little g....e to ride around on, and I found it! \"Marcus" described it very well. Best regards.

Hi, for your information, the SR400 is limited to 23.2 hp in Europe, whereas in the rest of the world it's 27 hp. To gain these 4hp, simply cut the stopper on the injector, which prevents the gas pedal from going to maximum. Result guaranteed. Rating : 5/5

Hello Godsavethemono,
Personally, I worked on the bike. First, I disassembled the wheel (10 mm wrench). Be careful behind this wheel there is a spring and a plastic spacer (mark the direction of the spacer). Then dismantled the plate held in place with 2 cruciform screws. I held the wheel in the air with a wire to clear the plate. Cutting the turntable with an angle grinder (the trickiest part of the job). File and paint the edge for the finishing touch. Ya pu qu\'à remonter. Voilou

thank you sr2014 - like you, I worked on the beast without dismantling anything - using a "dremmel" equipped with a flexible extension cable and a mini diamond milling cutter, I cut the stopper (take care to spread the cable, otherwise...)....) the throttle is free and the bike is much more pleasant to ride... reaching the 130-meter mark (for a few hectometres) on our curvy, "potholed" country roads is a sweet pleasure. But it's between 80 and 110 that the sr is most at ease. Thanks again for the tip.
Free the mono!

Well, I'm halfway through the break-in and I'm beginning to think I'm slipping on an electric bike... I can't hear it! Has anyone found an exhaust that's a bit more caustic than the original? I don't want to panic the crowds, but I'd like a motorcycle sound! I've started looking at tire sites, just to see, and I realize that these Metzeler Perfect ME 77s aren't so easy to find. You can find the front at a good price on one site, and the rear with the 110/90/18 ratings a bit more difficult... Do you have any tips?! Rating : 4/5

Hi there!
I installed a DUNSTALL style pot from GP CLASSIC. Big bang but engine more liberated. You have to pinch the air intake pipe at the exhaust, otherwise you'll get unbearable backfiring...

So I modified the inside of this pot to make it more tortuous, and therefore bearable for the ears of the maréchaussée. A good compromise.

It's not specific to the SR400, it's an adaptable one, 66cm long, diameter 45 with reducer 41. You'll need to make an angled bracket, because the one supplied won't fit over the old mount. I'm having one made in stainless steel, and you'll need to find a 12-pitch bolt to take the place of the original one; the seatbelt bolts are the same pitch, so you'll just have to adapt the length so it doesn't stick out and touch the swingarm. For the center stand, I temporarily put a rubber pad on the left rear passenger footrest support, but Kedo sells a specific pad for this purpose. Here's the fruit of my new experiment! Rating : 4/5

It's true that it's not cheap, and it's true that it doesn't push very hard (I've just swapped it with my 2006 GSXR 600 with almost 2000 balls to spare), but nostalgia was the strongest! The look, the retro feel, the controlled speed (!) at nearly 70, I thought it could be my last bike. One or two minor criticisms, perhaps, concerning the sound, which doesn't reflect the noise of the mono, and the lack of a small storage space for a disk-block, for example... I was 20 in 1980, and for me the 500 SR was never a utility bike. Back then, it was the big mono and its noise, the kick and the elegance of a retro motorcycle in its lines. Sure, you could classify it as such, but it's first and foremost a pleasure bike.
Just imagine the 70-something who goes out to get his bread kicking on it.

Yes, that's me, the 70-year-old, I still have a cb 1100 rs, plus a solex even slower than this good old sr 400, which reminds me of my first motorcycles: cb 125 s, 250 ducati mono. Then VINRE 450 honda, then 6 cylinders, cbx proling, 1300 kawasaki inj ( a tgv , 130 cv à 8000 tr/mn. The time has come to return not to a 190 cv yabusa, but a calmer mode, and less dangerous for the license, a motorcycle for quiet ballad, and for trips I have my good 1100 rs honda. Yes, the 400 sr is a coup de coeur, because to buy this bike, either be crazy to put such a price in a nice lung, or a great nostalgic, ( which I am )with a retiree budget. Otherwise, I would have liked to buy a 1000 cbx or z 900 kawa with the 4 pots..... I have the sr 400 60 th ( it slams, hard to find), lol: not the engine that slams, but the color Yamaha usa.

i'm all for the myth, but it's at least 1000 euros too expensive for a small single-cylinder, when it should be mounted as a bobber or scrambler at this price, and you can find a W800 or Triumph Bonneville without too many kilometers at this price with a longer-lasting, more torquey twin-cylinder. Du bonheur, tout simplement
French Model 2014
Beautiful to look at, balanced, retro, classy, a relatively torquey engine up to 4000 rpm
A bike in the steep s, correct braking, a little vibration, but more than bearable, a top finish, (better than the Chinese), d'accord guys, it's not the same price).

400 sr, there's the myth and reputation of Yamaha, the last machine still assembled, half by hand, in Japan, a guarantee of seriousness and quality.

For those who know how to take the time to take the time, a return to the source, classy and invigorating, a unique and soothing experience that will make you rediscover, the smell of field flowers, the enchanting visions of nature that surrounds you.

It's a motorcycle for the connoisseur, for the wise, and not for the throttle, the show-off, or the stopwatch.

So, if you share my philosophy, and believe me, when it comes to motorcycle experience, in all modesty, I know a thing or two .....

An expensive bike, it may seem so at first glance, but it's all metal, except for the indicators, assembled almost by hand in Japan, with quality made to last, so expensive, not really, for such quality, sold in small quantities (max 300 sr 400 for France). in short, an adorable machine, more than endearing and truly beautiful.

6 000 â'¬ !!! What a joke, especially if it sells for 3,700 â'¬ in Japan. They won't sell many, that's for sure. Too bad. The price should have been a maximum of 4,500 â'¬. And 23 hp is a pittance, so we should at least have gone for the CB 400 HONDA SS, which boasts 29 hp and 4 valves (2 for the YAM). Unfortunately, it's not sold in Europe. Rating : 3/5

Too expensive! At this price, I'd rather add 1500 and buy the Bonneville SE.

Otherwise mash motors! Wait Yamaha abuse.

I don't know if it's possible to buy it in Japan. 3700 ok but 6000 E, no way!!

... and for occasional bikers.
How many of us leave the bike in the garage for weeks or months between uses? It's the assurance of being able to restart without depending on the battery!

Decompress to the height of the exhaust pipe, lower again without decompressing, raise the kick and give it a sharp push Rating : 4/5

superb in spirit and philosophy, but the best would be 100cm3 more, (and therefore a few 7 or 8 horsepower more) or 1000 euros less. NB: The curb weight is 150 and a few kilos, 174 kilos when fully loaded Rating : 4/5
Hello
i checked the weight, and you're right. So I corrected the empty weight to the correct value ;)
Thanks for the feedback

French Model 2014
i like the simple idea of putting a good product back on the shelves, but price-wise, Yam's got a heavy hand for a model that's already more than paid for itself! No?
5000 yes...for the rest, they say, when you love it, you don't count. Too bad, SR 400 could have been an anti-crisis model as well as an anti-depression one!

... just a note: in Japan its price is 5,250,000 Yen, or 3,700 â'¬uros... you be the judge... Rating : 5/5

Superb bike, except for the seat with its plastic add-on at the rear, ideal for a cool way of riding - I love simple, uncluttered things - But as always, there's a catch: the price is exorbitant for a motorcycle of old design with very modest performance, which certainly fits in with current restrictions: speed limits, fuel prices..........Donc, it won't be bought by people of limited means, and those who can afford it will buy motorcycles that enhance their standing. So, I'm afraid that Yamaha-France will end up abandoning imports again, unless they lower
the PRICE .... Anyway, I'll be abstaining for this little gem at 5999 euros !!!!!!!*

tarif de la SR 400 excessif !!!!!
French Model 2014
I find it regrettable that this bike is sold at such a high price. In my opinion, 3,500 or 4,000 â'¬ would have been more appropriate for this displacement, and would have made it accessible to those without a large budget.

Too bad, I'd do without this nice little bike.

let's not exaggerate, it's not even the price of a good 125 Rating : 4/5
Pas mal mais ... trop chère !
French Model 2014
why is the engine only 23 hp? I think 30 or 35 would have been nice, especially as the bike is quite heavy. A nice looking machine, but the price-quality ratio is too high. TOO EXPENSIVE. Rating : 3/5
cher le cheval!
French Model 2014
At that price, you'd be better off with a Royal Enfield with 30 horsepower and a real retro that'll knock your socks off and make friends with everyone.
Reliability aside.........oh la la!

i've been riding a Royal Enfield 500 EFI for 3 years, my Bullet has nearly 25,000km and I haven't encountered any major problems.
the cast-iron engine with separate gearbox of the old bikes has been redesigned, and is now equipped with a 28hp aluminum single-block engine. Today's Royal Enfields are reliable, but they are also overpriced.
2500â'¬ in India, 5490 and 6350 â'¬ in France

In Japan it costs 4300 euros in France 5999 euros = ?

TOO HIGH!!! yamaha france can try to justify the price, but don't go overboard and take people for cows.

Anti-pollution standards in Japan are similar to those in Europe

I drive the original. A 1979 500 SR. It's simple, but what a joy to ride cool!
It's great against speed cameras and not even annoying at legal speeds. It's true happiness, pure revival!
Fellow bikers, rediscover the original pleasure of motorcycling and let us take you back to the 70s.
