presentation of the XSR 700 2016

To offer a machine with character, to have fun with a bike inspired by the values and style of Yamaha's past, to combine today's technology with the flavour of creations from the past. That's how you could describe the"Faster Sons" philosophy. Tempting as it is to explain in our own words a Japanese idea, often imbued with references, sensations and concepts difficult for a European to grasp. But this first creation - the XSR 700 - is the result of an embrace between Yamaha and Shinya Kimura, the famous Japanese tuner. This time, Yam is fully committed to the neo-retro roadster niche. Its XSR takes on a symbolic name, and joins the ranks of BMW Nine-T and Ducati Scrambler.

but where does it come from? The company with the tuning forks presents it as a tribute to the XS 650, a famous model covering the dawn of the 70s. A bit like the SR 400 back in the catalog? No, not at all. The SR has been the same bike for ages. The XSR, on the other hand, is based on an MT-07 with a strong taste of old-school preparation. Could this be the descendant of the XS 650? Let's digress for a moment and look at this illustrious machine from the '70s.

the year was 1969. At the time, Yamaha had only 2-strokes in its range, with the largest displacement reaching 350 cm3. The arrival of the XS 650 was a revolution in the range: it was the first large-displacement model for the manufacturer, and the engine was a 4-stroke. Elegant and slender (for its cubic capacity), the beauty didn't hit French roads until 1971.
More than 40 years later, how is the XSR 700 passing the torch?

Yamaha XSR 700 2016 - 1Yamaha XSR 700 2016 - 1

it's interesting to see the extent to which the evolution in displacement has shaken things up. The XS 650 was Yamaha's biggest cube; today, the MT-07 is an entry-level bike, despite its 45 cm3 increase. It's a top-seller in France, and deservedly so. Playful, with a lively, super-fun engine and as agile as a ballerina, it's a pleasure to ride. As the XSR 700 has the same chassis and engine, you'll find the same performance and the same pleasure in riding this bike. The riding position is more relaxed, with handlebars bent further back.

Yamaha XSR 700 2016

So it's the look that's going to sway us one way or the other. The XSR asserts its "Faster Sons" identity with a stylishly worked tank, a retro headlight recessed in a half-bus, a double-textured leather seat, and perforated plates covering the injection system and electronics.
The round headlight at the rear is nice, old-school style, but all plastic is average. A metal part would be much more appropriate. The aluminum radiator cover is a real eye-catcher; wouldn't more discretion be better?
Let's stop grumbling for a moment, and appreciate the opportunity to ride a neo-retro machine at a great price. Admittedly, the XSR 700 is about 1,000 euros more expensive than the MT-07, but it's still well below the price of a BMW Nine-T. We also appreciate the little goodies, such as the XSR700 inlay on the back of the seat, the XSR logo on the tank, the stitching on the seat, the minimalist dashboard, etc... and, as a very chauvinistic bonus, this bike will be assembled at the MBK factory in St-Quentin.

like the Bolt, the XSR will be happy to play the game of customization - the XV 950 Racer setting the example. The bolt-on rear frame has been designed with this in mind. And the owner will be able to maintain the spirit of the XS 650. Because for the moment, apart from a little engine architecture (parallel twin 4-stroke), the silhouette of the seat and the curvature of the handlebars, the resemblance between the two bikes is more a matter of imagination than anything else. If we were to accentuate the temporal bridge with spoked rims, two exhaust pipes running along the sides, chrome mudguards and a pair of tires... Oh no, the Pirelli Phantoms already have the treads from another era.
If you're in the mood for a workshop, a catalog of accessories is available, and several tuners are working on "Yard Built" parts.
*recall campaign*****
On July 31, 2018, Yamaha launched a recall campaign for its MT07s as well as its on-road ' Tracer 700 ' and neo-retro ' XSR700 ' variants.
The screws securing the drive chain housing to the swingarm could loosen and fall out due to vibrations while riding the vehicle. In addition, there was a possibility that once the fixing screws had fallen out, the chain case would break when it hit the drive chain. In extreme cases, the broken part of the chain guard could fall onto the road and hinder traffic. To counter this, Yamaha has launched a recall campaign to replace the chain case spacers and fixing screws.

For the French market, a total of 8,871 machines have been recalled.

Problème calcul
French fab32 Model 2022
You have a problem in your calculations because the xsr 188kg:73,4hp is 2,56 and not 2,39 the kawa I buy is the same 2,75 and not 2,57 you are very optimistic or the values weight real power are better than the official values Rating : 3/5
French Yvan Model 2019
I was looking for an unrestricted beginner's bike for daily use in the city (Paris region). For a long time, I hesitated with the KTM 690 for its lightness. I'm fully satisfied with the XSR: it's very maneuverable, yet light, and has plenty of power to sneak around, get out of the way quickly and sometimes knock the wind out of troublesome scooters. Small roads are also its playground. But forget the freeway.
I'm really delighted. Nevertheless, despite the engine's great flexibility, you often have to "pedal" to change gear, as you're not on a 4-legged bike.

model 2021 , after 12 bikes , from 500 cm3 to 1200 cm3 , excellent bike , you have to remove the rear shock absorber from the olhins for me , plus the front springs , a Mivv exhaust , carbon , and you have another bike , a very good bike that responds , power to weight ratio , road holding , pleasure to ride , my humble opinion Rating : 3/5

French Model 2016
After 5 years at the wheel of my Kawasaki Versys 650, for which I have nothing to reproach after 20,000 kilometers together, I felt like switching to something lighter, modern and punchy. As much as I wasn't seduced by the MT07 in 2017 (angular manga style), this XSR700 wins my approval in 2020, after 12 bikes I've tried (BMW GS750, F800R, Aprilia Shiver 900, Honda CB650R, Triumph Tiger, Ducat scrambler 800, Royal Enfield interceptor...), I tried it again this morning and I've signed, it will be mine soon (2020 Dynamic White model). It's a great "little" bike, with a great engine, and a great pick-up all the time, what do people expect? Rating : 4/5
French Hemge Model 2019
An excellent bike, I'd had enough of overweight road bikes and sport bikes that were increasingly difficult to ride on open roads
The XSR has it all: light, responsive, fast enough and with a look that stands out from the crowd. You'll find every possible accessory to equip it, including a windshield, center stand and single-seat saddle on mine
Its only fault, in my opinion, is the indecent rear suspension for a modern motorcycle. The shock absorber has been replaced by a factory schock

Excellent bike, very lively, powerful engine, I do not regret my purchase at all.
On the other hand, I’d like to get rid of the rear shock absorber, which is unworthy of this bike.

excellent bike, lively, pleasant, sparkling…
The only downside is the average suspension, which isn't up to par with the rest.
Nevertheless, it's a pleasure to ride.

French Model 2016
Really nice bike. The engine is beyond reproach. The only drawback is the chassis. It's quickly overwhelmed when the pace quickens. It gives up as soon as the road gets rough. Rodeo session ..... guaranteed. Engine braking is relatively strong. It's a twin-cylinder affair, but it's one of the most pronounced I've ever driven (and yet I'm riding a 1000cc twin). There's so much of it, it's like a single-cylinder. It lacks a little anti-dribble clutch for the sportier among us.
Apart from that, it remains an excellent "little" bike for everyday pleasure.

Fun à souhait
French Model 2016
Playful, light and comfortable, with a great face that's easy to modify. All this with low fuel consumption and low insurance costs - a great bike for everyday pleasure. Rating : 5/5
An affordable pleasure bike that allows me to ride in a variety of modes, depending on my mood, with a riding position that never gets tiring (it's really fun, it's a bike). Its retro-style design reminds me of the motorcycles I used to dream about when I was young. I didn't give it 5 stars because perfection doesn't exist. Rating : 4/5
It's a good-looking bike that's out of the ordinary, light and equipped with a pleasant engine. I'm buying it.
And it's strange, but I think the radiator is part of the bike's look, and the optional black covers would break up the style.
In short, I'm in.

esthétique, c'est carrément raté.
French Model 2016
It's too modern to appeal to the old, and too retro to appeal to the young.

Why that huge radiator, that amateurish mess, that impression of a botched motorcycle, and that ugly plastic headlight?

It would have been so easy to add fins, an aluminum-colored engine, and beautiful chrome pots with counter-cones in the spirit of the
Triumph thruxton. It's a pity, because the engine is super pleasant.

As for the resemblance with the xs 650 of my youth, you'll have to explain to me where the filiation lies, apart from the fact that this bike is a twin-cylinder of similar displacement.

Too bad you didn't dare to create a real vintage....

Amitiés motarde.

I'm currently riding a yamaha sr 400, and I'm waiting for yamaha to come out with an approved pot for this bike, to give it a bit more track and power (a little too much).

Really not bad at all, it's a change from what's currently being done in this range, and if it's even more economical than the MT-07 with an ECO mode.
I'd probably have preferred a price closer to 7000â'¬, but otherwise I can't see many faults.

Really nice, like all raodsters it's a bike for riding alone, I was going to take an MT07, as a second bike (I have a Tiger to ride with my wife, but now I'll wait to take this very pretty machine more endearing than the MT (as long as you put a coat of matte black on the radiator caps!) it's a good thing the xs 650 didn't have that awful design, it would never have been sold. The can looks nothing like the rest of the machine. it's an insult to vintage motorcycles.....

\"Vintage style"??? Not my taste, that's for sure.
\A descendant of the XS 650! I wouldn't wish that on her! The XS 650 (which was beautiful) was a coffin on two wheels. I know, I owned one.

In short, a banal, ugly (but surely effective) motorcycle perfectly in tune with the times.

plus neo que retro !
French Model 2016
In fact, it's a cheap nine-T ... but like the BM, it's more neo than retro: the rims are batten and the radiator is a mess, and the same goes for the pot: it's a far cry from the sausage pots of a true neo-retro like the Kawa W800 or the Bonneville ...
And much less classy than the nine-T

Answer to Bronco: indeed it's not a BMW Nine-T!!! because it's not a BMW but a Yamaha... go and buy a Nine T at the price of the XSR! you have to compare what's comparable! Rating : 4/5

couldn't there have been a more thoughtful integration of this p..... radiator. It looks like a shopping cart, it's all you can see. It puts all the preparation work on the ground. in my opinion. Can't we make curves or verticals out of it? hide it or paint it black? heck
