presentation of the XV 950 (Bolt) 2016

here's the kind of little rascal that's going to make customs long for more. Or rather, bobbers. With its stripped-down look, maximum simplification, surly spirit and head for the hills, Yamaha's new XV 950 is sure to shake up the manufacturer's range... and everyone else's. And upset one of the segment's icons, the Harley 883 Sportster. And by the same token, it upsets one of the segment's icons, the Harley 883 Sportster. Presented in the States under the name Bolt, this machine is a real agitator, and it shows!

the XV 950 gives the Japanese manufacturer's series a real boost. With its compact profile and fighting spirit, it's a world away from the long XVS cruisers and their senatorial Dragstar ancestors. You have to go back to the 535 Virago to find this cheeky attitude.
In Uncle Sam's country, it's called Bolt; and that name suits it so well that I'll continue to call it that. Do you mind?!? So, Bolt, young metal and twin mad dog, arrives on the old continent with a striking silhouette, a hard-hitting style, and a few little effects for show. Petal brake discs, an impetuous round LED taillight, minimalist mudguards; and if you opt for the R version, an imitation suede saddle and separate bottle amortos.

is the Bolt derived from the XVS 950? Not at all. Aside from the engine (revised for this new case), the Yam bobber has been given its own definition. Chrome, big handlebars and ostentation are all gone. Featuring a new chassis with double steel cradle, 41 mm fork and twin side shocks, the Bolt is a sparrow compared to its XVS cousin. It is 145 mm shorter, weighs 31 kg less, and its 1570 mm wheelbase is 115 mm shorter. The machine is much more agile than the Midnight Star, especially with a much lighter tire profile: 100 / 90 - 19 at the front and 150 / 80 - 16 at the rear. Nothing exceptional in the braking department. We stick to the basics, with a 298 mm disc per wheel, combined with a 2-piston caliper on the bow and a single-piston caliper on the stern. It can be skilfully complemented by optional ABS (standard on the R).

back on the rear! Look at that pot! Or should I say, that big, manly gun. We can also talk about the air filter cover, which isn't discreet either. And so much the better! The Bolt isn't here to hide in the shadows.
On the engine side, the 942 cm3 has been reworked, especially in the intake area. Its air filter is 15% smaller than that of the XVS. New mapping was required, and the result is 52 horsepower, or 2 less (no big deal), but improved torque. With 8.1 mkg, that's 0.3 more at the same 3,000 rpm. Oh, and before I forget, the engineers took the opportunity to integrate a rubber damper in the clutch to smooth gear changes.

low in the saddle, with a 690 mm seat height in line with class standards, the Yam Sportster promises to be a sensational machine. The technical choice of rear drivetrain doesn't give us cause for optimism when it comes to comfort (to be put into perspective with the R version). The 21 mm wide drive belt is the thinnest ever used by Yamaha.

a few small accessories are available to spice up the 950 Bolt, such as an Akrapovic exhaust system, a bubble, a Stiletto saddle, spoked wheels, a spring-loaded saddle, fork protectors and more... With this model, Yamaha offers a substantially daring custom, ready to abuse the initiatory H-D 883. It doesn't want to make any concessions, and in fact, it doesn't have to.

Good evening,

i like this topic on the Bolt even better than the one where I already made a comment about the top speed, which you corrected, and I thank you for that, because you should give credit where credit is due!

Don't change anything in this approach to this bike, it's top!

For motorcycle data sheets, I always consult your site first; without pretension I wanted to tell you that for reading your site, the blue with the black tires the eyes, please excuse me for this off-topic, but I found that before it was better.

Yours sincerely

Michel (Moto Exaltation).

Thank you for your opinion.

Concerning the appearance of the site, we haven't changed anything, the problem comes from a certain version of Internet Explorer that doesn't respect anything (no standards). If you use another browser (chrome or firefox for example) you'll notice that the reading is perfect.

Bonne route en bolt ;)

hi, well I just bought my bolt yesterday for my christmas a little early, a delight, easy to get to grips with, super torque, nice power, more than enough, impeccable road holding despite the fact that I couldn't push it too hard because I was breaking it in and I had new tires, can't wait for the sun to rise so I can go back and try it out a little more, hi Rating : 5/5

hello everyone!

A little scoop...
Basic version at 8490 euros...
R version at 9490 euros....

The HD883 still has a bright future ahead of it! Nothing to fear for the house of Harley.

In the USA, the Bolt is sold at the same price as the MT09 ($8000 for each), but over here, the Bolt is 800â'¬ more expensive (8500â'¬/7800â'¬) !!!

Yamaha has obviously aligned itself with the prices of the 883, figuring that if HD sold for more in Europe, there was no reason why they shouldn't take advantage of it to make even more margin than in the USA.

I've always liked Yamaha, but they're far too greedy, and for the same price, I'd rather buy the original.
Too bad, because I really liked the Bolt...

what do you want? They sell it for 5000 euros!
for the same price as a sportster, you really get what you pay for (I ride a sportster and I've just tried the bolt, so I'm putting it up for sale and taking the bolt: better brakes, engine, smooth controls, etc....)in short, nothing but the best.

Having had a sportster with its agonizing suspension and braking, I have to say that I like the R version. The engine is much better than that of the Harley. Just look at the comparo us on youtube...
As for the price, 8000â'¬ is a journalist's estimate, Yamaha has not yet released the official price. In my opinion, if they're not too stupid, it'll be more like 7000â'¬. To be continued ;)

This bike is featured in the Cool Wide magazine at $8,000, or 6,145â'¬ on the US market... Clearly, if 1$=1â'¬ is better to buy an HD, and to break into the EU market, you'll have to do better in terms of price Rating : 2/5

8000â'¬ for the model without suspension! I was thinking about it, but that's the negotiated price of an IRON. To break into the market, you have to go much lower in price. Rating : 3/5
French darkpearl Model 2014
there's nothing to do, I just don't get it... The pot is horrible, and above all, the tank and the plastic extension of the fender... Well, that's fine, there's something for everyone, but frankly, for another 1,000 euros, I like the H. D better. The Honda Shadows were sterile compared to the custom Harleys. I hope Yamaha has "virilized" them all, as they would make an acceptable alternative for those who don't like Harleys or Victories... Rating : 3/5
French Guigoon34 Model 2014
Why pay for a copy when you can have the original, with chrome pots and Harley sound, for the same or almost the same price? Honestly... Rating : 2/5

yes, and good vibrations too! I've never felt such pleasure on a jap bicylinder, but there's something for everyone and that's fine Rating : 3/5
French Vic
I think it's nice... Certainly if the price is 8,000 â'¬, Iron is still a better choice. At 7,000, it can do the trick... But having owned one, the Harley sound, as Guigoon34 says, is completely stifled by anti-pollution standards!!! My Virago 535 sounded better, and my current Shadow 750 Spirit even better! You have to go through stage 1 to get back a "real" Harley, and that means an extra 1,500 â'¬ (depending on the pots, and the conces...)!!!! And of course in this case you're breaking the law (unapproved pots) and it's 90 â'¬ the plum plus cg confiscated with obligation to return to origin... So I sold it very quickly !!! Rating : 4/5
