presentation of the SR 400 60eme anniversaire 2016
it takes a certain amount of faith and nostalgia, or one hell of a crush, to make the SR 400 your own. Yet Yamaha's approach is a nice one: to offer a truly vintage machine with all the simplicity of an old-fashioned machine. Because this isn't a reinterpretation of an old model or a styling exercise. It's the same as it was in its early days, only slightly adapted over time to meet homologation requirements. But the machine is not very spirited, its use is limited, and above all, it is very expensive considering its performance. More expensive than a CB 500 and barely less than an MT-07, that's a big price to pay. The law of the marketplace is hard.
in 2016, some will take another look at the SR 400, as it joins the clan of 60th-anniversary Yamaha models sporting the checkered black and yellow "Speedblock" color scheme. Immediately, the bike exudes much more charm. It no longer looks like a motorcycle lying dormant in a forgotten farm garage, but would make a great paddock companion. Almost hip, the SR 400 60th. It makes you want to get up close and rediscover its metal and/or chrome parts, so rare on modern roadsters. Details like the kickstand, spoked rims, mono cooling fins and fork gaiters are all eye-catching. It all harkens back to the days when the most modern technology was black-and-white TV, moon travel and the record player. But this living past still comes at a perennial price.
let's not forget a bit of technology, so that young people infused with Superbike engines and hyper-accomplished chassis can discover the charms of their parents' parents. The mono-engine derived from the 500 XT is virtually unchanged from its debut. With dimensions of 87 x 67.2 mm, it favors torque and responsiveness at low revs. The technical data sheet looks like something out of an old-fashioned catalog unearthed from a great-uncle's treasure chest. 2 valves, 1 ACT, a compression ratio of 8.5:1; technology in the Giscard d'Estaing style. An effort has been made to improve torque with a larger airbox and a larger 47 mm intake valve. The best part is that it starts up just as it did in the old days: with the kick. Nostalgic fans will love it. Younger riders will have to learn how to kick, find the compression point (there's a warning light on the cylinder head to make the job easier), use the decompressor or enjoy the pleasure of getting a kick back in the calf.
yes, yes, it's an original chassis (not to be confused with original) that holds the SR 400 for you. A steel semi-double cradle frame, with the engine oil running through the main vertical tube. Suspension consists of a conventional fork and 2 side shocks. The SR 400 also retains its 18-inch spoked wheels, a brake disc at the front and a drum at the rear.
Recall campaign:
At the end of October 2018 , Yamaha initiated a recall campaign for its SR 400s due to a concern with the oil return hose. Due to insufficient tightening torque of the nut securing this hose, there was a possibility of engine oil leaking from the tightening nut.
Machines concerned:
