presentation of the SCR 950 Yard Built - Jeff Palhegyi Designs - 2017
The SCR 950 clearly attracts the attention of the Yard Built program. For the second time, Yamaha's custom-scrambler passes into the creative hands of a chosen tuner. We're off to a strong start in 2017 and back to the States. Yam has already forged spectacular
with several of America's leading tuners, including legends such as Greg Hageman of Hageman Cycles, Californian Roland Sands and his many Yard Built creations (including the XSR 900 "Faster Sons") and California-based tuner Go Takamine of Brat Style, who created the SCR 950 "Chequered Scrambler".
Renowned for the beautiful customizations of Yamaha motorcycles they have created over the past twenty years, Southern California-based tuner Jeff Palhegyi and the Jeff Palhegyi Designs team have become experts in developing functional machines from conceptual works. Following their first customization (a Royal Star from Yamaha's Star Cruiser range in 1995), Jeff Palhegyi Designs has designed and produced a number of motorcycles, from long-distance Raiders to motocross Bolts and the SR 400 "TT". The company has customized over 70 motorcycles since its first collaboration with Yamaha in 1995. The launch of the 2017 Yamaha SCR 950 was therefore a perfect preparation opportunity for Jeff Palhegyi Designs.
"The SCR 950 is a bike that can meet a rider's many needs," comments Cristian Barelli, Marketing Coordinator at Yamaha Motor Europe."Whether you want to go to the beach or get lost in the mountains, it's a very versatile machine that can offer totally different experiences, while remaining fun and retaining the spirit found in all Yamaha Sport Heritage models. We really like Jeff Palhegyi's preparation. He's managed to create a spectacular, sleek and offensive scrambler that retains the character and ride quality of the standard SCR 950."

Jeff Palhegyi's great creativity is the driving force behind his current projects. It draws on 29 years of R&D experience with Yamaha Motor Corporation, including projects for quads and SSVs in addition to motorcycles. He owns several rare vintage Yamaha motorcycles, which he exhibits regularly. These include the TZ750 and XS motocross models. Armed with this passion and history, the Jeff Palhegyi Designs team drew inspiration from a 1966 Big Bear Scrambler YDS3C for Yard Built's latest project.
"When I first saw the SCR 950, I knew it would be a great bike to customize," says Jeff Palhegyi,"but with so many scrambler-type preparations coming out recently, we wanted to offer something really different. It was during the press presentation that I saw the Big Bear Scrambler alongside the SCR 950, and that's what ultimately inspired the preparation."
The finished project clearly pays homage to the Big Bear Scrambler, with features such as the inlaid Yamaha logo and rubber knee pads on the fuel tank, two-tone paint and a custom exhaust system featuring heat shields that hark back to the days of do-it-all motorcycles. Other customization elements make this "Faster Sons" a true modern-day motorcycle. From the Renthal handlebars in custom Duane Ballard leather, to the tool bag on the fork and saddle, to the shortened swingarm suspended by Fox's high-performance 14-inch Podium RC1 rear shocks, contemporary parts combine perfectly with retro elegance.
This successful marriage is perfectly illustrated by the shot-glass taillight, but also by the custom subframe and side panels, custom vintage off-road-style front and rear mudguards, chunky Shinko Adventure Trail tires mounted on 40-spoke, soft-rimmed aluminum rims, custom aluminum headlight shoe and bracket, twisted steel brake shoes and an aluminum fairing with custom "Faster Sons" logo for the K&N air filter.
"I'm really happy with this preparation," comments Jeff Palhegyi,"and I'd like to thank my team who worked with me to take an artistic concept and turn it into the bike you see today."
