presentation of the WR 250 F 2021
after its major makeover in 2020, the WR 250 F continues its momentum by updating its graphics in 2021.nothing more, as it's the 450 that takes pride of place in 2021. All of last year's evolutions are here:
yamaha has developed a faster, more powerful and lighter enduro model, based on the YZ 250 F motocross bike. Featuring a new high-performance inverted-cylinder engine, an aluminum frame with bilateral beams and optimized front and rear suspension, as well as redesigned, slimmer bodywork, the latest-generation WR 250 F is the most advanced 4-stroke 250 cm3 enduro motorcycle ever built by Yamaha.
high-performance engine based on the YZ 250 F
The 2020 / 2021 WR 250 F engine is based on that of theYZ 250 F, and features technologies that improve performance and deliver greater linear power across its entire operating range. A new forged aluminum piston leads to a higher compression ratio of 13.8:1. Optimized exhaust cam timing and new intake valve seats increase low- and mid-range torque values.
The 10-hole injector of the previous model is replaced by a 12-hole injector. A new 44 mm Mikuni throttle body and revised intake cone also contribute to improved performance. In addition, to accommodate these modifications, the 2020 / 2021 WR 250 F features a new crankshaft balancing weight.
Compared with its predecessor, the 2020 WR 250 F offers higher power across its entire operating range, as well as improved performance at higher engine speeds.
lighter starter
For faster, easier starting, the new model features a lightweight, compact starter motor with a diameter of just 50 mm. Repositioned in the chassis for optimized mass centering, this powerful 390 W starter is powered by a compact lead-acid battery. A new alternator provides a powerful, constant power supply.
lighter, stronger clutch
For 2020 / 2021, the WR 250 F's 6-speed transmission features a lighter, stronger clutch. Featuring special high-temperature-resistant friction discs, the new clutch provides improved lever feel. It is designed to operate consistently and efficiently over long periods in the toughest terrain.
enduro-specific air filter
Yamaha's unique inverted-head engine features a forward-facing intake with an airbox mounted in front of the fuel tank. For 2020 / 2021, a new air filter is used, allowing removal without tools. The length of the intake combined with the special design of the filter contributes to the new engine's linear power output and consequent improved traction. Its technical features ensure that only clean air reaches the combustion chamber.
compatible with the Power Tuner smartphone app
For 2020 / 2021, the power characteristics of the WR 250 F can be set wirelessly via smartphone or tablet using the Power Tuner app. Previously, this was only possible with the Yamaha Power Tuner device, but now it's easier and quicker than ever to set engine operating parameters.
The Power Tuner app offers an even wider range of settings, enabling WR 250 F riders to adapt power output to suit their preferences, terrain and ambient conditions. Riders can choose between 3 engine maps, and between 16 adjustable values for injection and ignition timing. The values are displayed on a 3D map for greater precision when adjusting settings in the desired rpm ranges, enabling engine character to be fine-tuned to suit virtually any situation.
The Power Tuner app also includes a race log, engine diagnostics, a real-time monitoring screen and a data backup function. It also enables riders to share and compare maps and race summaries when planning competition strategies, or simply to help other riders get the most out of their bikes.
engine mapping switch
The WR 250 F features a handlebar-mounted engine mapping switch. This function offers two factory-preset modes, but riders can choose to use custom maps created using the Power Tuner application. These maps can be downloaded to the WR 250 F's Communication Control Unit (CCU), and the rider can switch between them.
other engine modifications for 2020 / 2021
- Lower cylinder design reduces pumping effect
- Oil filler port and dipstick relocated
- Aluminum water pump propeller and new cooling hose routing
- New dual-electrode spark plug
- Lightweight nuts and bolts
chassis
new double-beam frame for more responsive steering
The new aluminum double-beam frame features a revised layout with straight fuel tank support spars and, to achieve the desired balance of rigidity, new main engine mounts with additional outer plates. The new design increases overall chassis rigidity by around 15% for a lighter, more balanced feel, as well as excellent feedback from the track.
high-performance front and rear suspension
Yamaha's front and rear suspension systems are considered among the best in the off-road world. For 2020 / 2021, the WR 250 F is equipped with a YZ 250 F-type AOS (Air Oil Separate) front fork that uses enduro-specific settings to handle low- and high-speed riding situations on a wide range of surfaces, hard and soft.
Operating with larger tubes (1 mm more than the previous model) and benefiting from greater oil flow, the new Kayaba fork (KYB) offers improved feel. A new leaf spring in the mid-speed valve (MSV) precisely adjusts the amount of oil to provide excellent low-speed damping. The adjustment of the enduro fork allows smooth transitions between compression and rebound phases. The new fork also features stiffer front axle mounts to reduce flex and provide a better grip feel, for enhanced stability and handling.
At the rear, the new shock absorber derived from theYZ 250 F features a stronger, lighter 350g coil spring. For more consistent damping, the fuel tank capacity has been increased by 30 cm³.
larger, extra-flat fuel tank
The WR 250 F offers greater range thanks to a new 7.9-liter fuel tank, an increase of 0.5 liters over the previous model. The new design was inspired by theYZ 250 F's fuel tank. The extra capacity was achieved by extending the tank downwards in the center of the bike to achieve optimum balance.
slimmer bodywork, improved ergonomics
For 2020 / 2021, this high-performance 4-stroke 250 cm3 model offers a bold new look, faithful to the WR 450 F model and motocross YZFs. New radiator gills and airbox cover offer a smoother, more uniform appearance, while new side covers and rear mudguard create a more aggressive look. To keep the bike looking the same, the trim features wear-resistant molded-in patterns.
Although the new fuel tank holds more fuel, the silhouette of the WR 250 F 2020 / 2021 is slimmer than that of the previous model. Combined with a flatter, lower seat, this improves rider ergonomics and mobility.
new front light plate
The WRF family's look is further enhanced by the use of a new front headlight plate that drops down onto the fork and sits closer to the rider. Not only does this contribute to mass centering, it also creates a lighter, more agile feel for the rider.
lighter, stronger engine cover
For even greater protection, the WR 250 F uses a new engine mount made of lightweight plastic resin. As well as protecting the chassis, water pump, hoses and crankcases, this prevents the ingress of dirt and mud that can increase operating weight. Its flat base ensures smooth gliding over rocks.
lightweight speed sensor and high-precision display
A new lightweight front wheel sensor transmits its data to a high-precision speed display. By eliminating the previous drive cable and clamp, the new system speeds up front wheel removal and reassembly. The compact display also includes fuel level and engine management indicators.
