presentation of the S 1000 RR HP4 2014

HP stands for Hautes Performances; BMW Motorrad's sports department, similar to Motorsport and its 4-wheelers (M3, M5, etc.). For the record, the HP2 Sport propelled the Boxer to the pinnacle of its evolution. A superb machine for gentleman riders, it attracted a great deal of attention when it took part in endurance races. The HP2 Enduro and Megamoto were also fine achievements in their segments.

an S 1000 RR is already a high-caliber missile. But with the HP4 version, we're faced with a machine that's largely optimized to make up for those missing seconds, while being equipped with fine parts and even more advanced electronic assistance.

a specific deco and a set of racing stickers to sharpen the retina... you'll be curious to know more. With the addition of carbon parts, an Akrapovic muffler and lightened forged-aluminum wheels, this version of the hypersport is seriously slimmed down. As standard, the S 1000 RR weighs 206.5 kg fully loaded; the HP4 drops below 200 kg. But how? Most of the weight is lost through lighter wheels, which save 2.4 kilos, and a titanium exhaust system, which saves 4.5 kilos.

BMW S 1000 RR HP4 2014

The Brembo braking system uses one-piece radial calipers with special brake pads for the HP4. For greater efficiency, it is assisted by a different version of Race ABS, refined by feedback from IDM (German speed championship).

the engine benefits from no changes (with 200 hp, there's already enough to go around) apart from the breathing of the titanium Akra pot and slightly revised engine management: whatever the mode, the 4-cylinder delivers full power. The engine-makers have also boosted torque between 6,000 and 9,750 rpm for better cornering. In "Rain" mode, however, they have smoothed out the watts between 2,500 and 8,000 rpm.
To save a few thousandths, the shifter is fitted as standard, allowing you to shift up a gear without a load break. There's not a second's respite on the straights for the new 200 mm-wide gumshoe.

on the chassis side, the HP4 takes sportbikes into a new world with silicon caravels, wedges packed with sensors, algorithms and software. Increased efficiency and unprecedented versatility are the order of the day with DDC electronic suspension. What's DDC? Dynamic Damping Control; self-adaptive damping to suit road conditions and driving style.
With BMW's ESA and other servo-controlled suspensions, you could leave the screwdriver at home. This time, it goes much further. The DDC control unit constantly receives a wealth of information from the various sensors (bike speed, inclination, travel, etc.) and then adapts the damping in a few thousandths of a second. Depending on the rider's riding style and road conditions, the system adjusts the hydraulics just right.
The DDC also acts according to your preferences and chosen driving modes. In "Rain" and "Sport", for example, damping is calibrated to be more supple. In "Race" and "Slick", the setting is much firmer. A sports car that's "harder" on the track, then softer on the road, all at the touch of a button! Top stuff!

BMW S 1000 RR HP4 2014

Let's stay on the track for a moment. BMW has thought about hot starts and added a start-assist widget, just like on the Aprilia RSV4 APRC. Launch Control is with you to precisely dose power so you can concentrate on other things. No, not the umbrella girl... That bend over there, where you've got to get in first. Maximum torque is regulated according to how much the rear wheel can digest and how much the front wheel is relieved. And the regulation doesn't stop there. In 1st gear, engine speed is limited to 8,000 rpm up to 60 km/h. Then, in second gear, the torque is recalibrated according to the gear and sends out the optimum mashed potato. Launch Control deactivates in 3rd gear, when the bike passes 30° of angle or when another DTC mode is selected. It also prevents wheelies.
But don't worry, the HP4 knows how to play the game: without Launch Control, you can "wheelie" as long as the bike's angle doesn't exceed 25° in "Race" mode, or 30° in "Slick" mode.

that's right, the "Slick" mode. Béhème has tweaked it a little on the HP4, with optimized traction control. It can be adjusted while riding, over a range from +7 to -7. A touch of the appropriate button on the left-hand commodo allows the desired calibration.

the advertised price is in excess of 21,000 euros for this impressive tracker. A limited-edition thoroughbred, each HP4 has its serial number laser-engraved on the upper fork crown. More anecdotally, this Super S 1000 RR gains a smoked bubble, LED indicators and an extended engine cowling. As with all BMWs, the catalog of options is extensive, including a passenger kit. Yes, as an exclusive sports car, the HP4 can be driven solo.

A Competition pack is available to "sport" the HP4 even further and indulge in an even more pronounced racing flavour. It includes a series of carbon parts, HP footrests, brake and clutch levers, and blue-painted wheels, all for a set of 7 violets.
Want more? Check out HP Race and pick up a data logger, a calibration kit, a reverse gear grid, a Power Kit, etc...

Manufacturer recall in the following countries: France, Germany, Slovenia.

At high engine speeds (>= 12,500 rpm), the oil filter's screw connection may come loose, causing oil to leak from the oil filter. This can lead to oil deposits on the road, creating slippery sections and increasing the risk of accidents and injuries.
