presentation of the VISION NEXT 100 2016

Perhaps this is how the bikers of the 21st century will ride the machines of the future. BMW's vision is striking. At last, a surrealism beyond the future and beyond fantasy.

The BMW Motorrad VISION NEXT 100 motorcycle symbolizes the ultimate in rider experience. Without helmet or protective clothing, he feels centrifugal forces, acceleration, wind and nature. He can interact with his environment with all his senses and savor every moment. The design of the Vision Next 100 conveys the very essence of motorcycling: man and machine are one. Every detail exudes premium quality. With this in mind, BMW's design team takes the formal elements that have marked the brand's history and gives them a new interpretation, both visually and functionally.
Thanks to iconic elements such as the black triangular frame, the white rechampi and the classic shape of the flat-twin (boxer engine) that powers the motorcycle without releasing a single emission, the visionary vehicle unequivocally reveals its identity as a "true BMW". BMW Motorrad's past and future come together expressively on this bike.

triangular frame - a classic icon revisited

The shape of the Vision Next 100's black triangular frame deliberately evokes the very first BMW motorcycle - the R32 of 1923, while reinterpreting it as a functional sculpture: it links the front and rear wheels in a dynamic curve. There are no visible housings or joints; everything seems to spring from a single source.
Viewed from the side, the frame gives the Vision Next 100 a basic look. In keeping with this style, the ergonomics, and therefore the handlebar position, correspond to those of a roadster. Thanks to the skilful arrangement of surfaces, the frame offers wind and weather protection worthy of a motorcycle with a full fairing. The frame surface is made of matt black textile. Its silky sheen and fine lines further accentuate the frame's distinctive shape, while at the same time providing a modern interpretation of a classic BMW element. The Bavarian firm's logo is perfectly highlighted on the dark frame: during the ride, it shines in the brand's familiar blue and white colors.

flexframe - the frame that contributes to steering

The Vision Next 100's flexframe extends in a single line from the front to the rear wheel, allowing steering maneuvers to be performed without the hinges usually used today. When the rider turns the handlebars, the entire frame deforms, allowing the bike to change direction. The forces required for deformation vary according to the situation: for example, manoeuvring is particularly easy at standstill, while at high speeds the frame is extremely rigid.

the powertrain - inspired by BMW's flat-twin design

the powertrain is integrated into the middle of the black frame. It's both a styling element and a historical reminiscence: its shape and construction are reminiscent of the traditional BMW flat-twin (boxer), but it's an emission-free unit. The external shape of the "boxer" changes according to the situation. At rest, it hugs the bike just right. But as soon as you start riding, the engine block spreads out sideways. This optimizes aerodynamics and weather protection on the road. Sophisticated polished aluminum highlights this part of the bike.

minimalist form, prestigious details

The Vision Next 100 has a sleek look that makes you want to take off right away. The design of the front end is minimalist, but enriched by high-end details. A large metal reflector integrates the frame above the front wheel. It houses the daytime running light, which consists of two U-shaped elements stacked one above the other. At the same time, the reflector acts as a deflector. Combined with the integrated wind deflector, it optimizes airflow and therefore aerodynamics.
The "body" parts, such as the saddle, upper frame fairing and mudguards, are made of carbon.
Two tapering red light bodies under the seat act as taillights and indicators. They take up the double-C shape typical of the rear lights on today's BMW motorcycles and interpret it in a resolutely forward-looking manner.
The tires don't just act as shock absorbers. Their variable tread pattern actively adapts to the road surface, ensuring optimum grip at all times.

analog elements in the digital age

Displays, cables and switches have been eliminated. However, one element stands out from the sober forms of the front end: a red lever switch on the right-hand end of the handlebars. Knowingly designed as a mechanical element, it locks or unlocks the throttle. A reminiscence of the analogue era in which motorized two-wheelers were born. The articulated levers on the outside also evoke the history of the motorcycle.

digital technologies for an analog experience

The Vision Next 100 takes advantage of the possibilities offered by the digital world to take the analog experience of riding a motorcycle to a new level. At the heart of this special feeling of freedom is the intelligent interconnection between rider, bike and environment. It makes tricky road situations predictable. Combined with active assistance systems, the rider of the Vision Next 100 will always be in control of what's going on. The systems are not only capable of anticipating and indicating the required actions to the driver, they can also intervene during the journey to protect him or her. The usual protective equipment, such as helmets or reinforcements, are therefore no longer necessary.

" Self-balancing - intelligent active assistance systems

The active assistance systems of the future will automatically balance the motorcycle, both on the road and when stationary. The systems will thus be able to increase the bike's stability and the rider's safety in certain situations. Beginners will be reliably assisted, falling off will become impossible. They also ensure the bike's balance when stationary - it won't tip over, even when the rider has already dismounted.
The systems also ensure a particularly dynamic and agile riding experience. Experienced riders benefit from an even more agile motorcycle. Assistance systems extend its capabilities.
All riders, regardless of ability or experience, can constantly push their limits and intensify their riding experience. So, from the very first metre, every outing becomes an experience in which the rider lives his or her freedom.
