presentation of the HM 1100 HYPERMOTARD evo 2011

since its inception, the Ducati Hypermotard has attracted a great deal of curiosity, both in terms of its design and its existence. Even though the Bologna factory has made it clear that it's not just about Superbikes, we're still surprised to see it experimenting with concepts revealed by craftsmen. Except that this striking supermotard retains the Ducati identity: character, efficiency and looks!

why settle for good when you can have better? Here's the answer: Hypermotard 1100 Evo. The same idea, the same sporty silhouette, the same ingredients, with less fat in the cocktail and more punch in the lemon.
But the 1078cc twin... can't you get something more out of it? Is there no way to improve this desmo??? We're not panicking. Let's see what Ducat' can pull out of his bag of tricks. First of all, breathing. A new airbox, revised intake and exhaust ducts, a new camshaft in the cylinder heads with higher valve lift, new pistons to cope with the higher compression ratio (up from 10.7 to 11.3 : 1), a different ignition system with a single spark plug (previously 2), and 5 more horsepower. We'll even facilitate their gallop with an 848 flywheel.
Come on back, guys. As long as you're improving this, can't you also do something about that? Maybe there's some weight to be saved, eh? Thanks to Vacural's vacuum pressure die-casting process, we've shaved 3.2 kilos off the crankcases. A new starter freewheel saves a further 1,250g, magnesium covers a further 750g, and all in all, the twin-cylinder is 5.2kg lighter.
The frame, still a trellis, uses the same type of construction as for the 796 HM. The result is fewer welds, a better finish and a weight reduction of 1,800g. This general evolution is accompanied by new Siemens electronics and an oil cooler with an 85% larger heat exchange surface.
What hasn't changed didn't need to. To guide the beast, it's still a big 50 mm diameter Marzocchi inverted fork, with Brembo radial calipers on 305 mm discs. The rear end is unflappable and stylish, with a single-arm stemming from the long lineage of the 916 - 1098 and its evocative double exhaust under the seat. Underneath, a new dashboard straight out of the brand's superbikes accentuates the sporty feel.

although noticeably more powerful, the 1100 HM Evo suffers from what needs the most work: its engine. Much improved, it still lacks extension, and can't hold a candle to such furies as the KTM 990 SM and its 115 horsepower. Granted, the Katoche is more violent, and the Hypermotard will be a little easier to dominate with its less elitist ardor; but if you want accessible, isn't the HM 796 more appropriate?! Perhaps this Evo would have been perfect if it had adopted the liquid twin of the 1198... Let's remain courteous: the 1100 Evo remains a superb, highly efficient toy on the road, with a very attractive personality. Fanfan understood this before anyone else, and only reluctantly parted with it, without any of its successors coming into the garage.
