presentation of the CBR 600 RR 2007
the 600 CBR will surprise us once again. The 2007 model year marks 4 years since the first 600 RR appeared on the market, so it's time for Honda to give its beloved 600 a complete overhaul. Shocking, aggressive, vicious... no doubt, but with a persistent sense of déjà vu that runs through the entire machine. The new CBR 600 RR seems to draw more on existing fashion than on bold styling. Nonetheless, the pencil stroke is daring, surprising, sometimes tormented, with a dose of spice not usually found in the winged manufacturer. The surprises are there, but where do they appeal most?
the rear end? With the RCV 211-style air vents removed, the folding seat seems very wise. It almost reminds us of the 2001 CBR 600 FS. Rest assured, the potty is still under the seat.
the lower fairing? Unabashedly inspired by that of the latest CBR 1000 RR, taking advantage of the opportunity to mark a certain break with the MotoGP-inspired design that has been the style of the CBR 600 since 2003. An evolution that continues right down to the...
forkhead? That's where we start to cringe. Following in the footsteps of the ZX-6RR and the Yamaha R6, the little CBR is now equipped with a forced-air intake with a central intake right in the middle of its face. The first criticism leads us to find marked similarities with the mouth of the sultry R6 or that of theAprilia RSV-R 1000. It would be unkind to criticize in this way: remember that it was Honda, with its VTR SP-1, that first created this distinctive type of forced air intake, 6 years ago.
l
"Yeah, yeah, but what's in the belly of this new CBR?"
i'm getting there. And now, pay close attention to what follows. What's in the guts of the new RR? The most compact and lightest 4-cylinder engine in its class. A rethought, redesigned, lightened mill, 2 kg lighter. An engine rated at 120 hp (4 more than before), with increased torque between 7,000 and 10,000 rpm. New magnesium parts, new connecting rods, forged pistons, technological transfer from the 1000 RR's boiler, exhaust valve, 500 extra rpm for maximum power, etc... the 600 is packed with the latest technological refinements. Even so, on paper, this engine is not yet as powerful as the Kawa and Yam powerplants. But beware ->
The thing that's going to shake you up the most, the argument that's going to hurt the competition, is weight. And here, I can tell you that I reread the specification sheet 3 times just to be sure.
To achieve this, in addition to the weight saved on the engine, the chassis has been trimmed (- 5.7 kgs) and even the electronics (- 400 g).
To enhance the sporty potential of this little worm, the chassis has also been radically reworked. The wheelbase is 22 mm shorter, the swingarm 5 mm longer, and the frame has been completely redesigned around the new engine. Still using the die-casting technique, the new frame is designed from just 4 sections, instead of the previous 11. The rider's position has also changed, with the seat moved back 15 mm and the handlebars raised by 10 mm. Suspension remains faithful to the 41 mm HMAS inverted fork with radial brake calipers, and the PRO-LINK rear suspension unit developed in MotoGP. The new radiator is 40 mm narrower and 33 mm taller, helping to refine the lines.
You've heard of steering on radical motorcycles. The CBR 600 now has a bonus, like the 1000 RR, to calm its steering ardor. Indeed, the little pistarde has inherited the new-generation HESD electronic steering damper. This system was first introduced on the first 1000 Fireblade in 2004.
could it beSébastien Charpentier's enthusiasm and talent that are giving wings to the creativity of the engineers in charge of the 600 CBR project? It's clear that things are starting to heat up at Honda, especially for this pistarde that's quivering in the hands of our national champion. Fortunately for the rest of us, judging by the performance of this new generation of pistardes, we can see that the CBR's surprising design has not overshadowed its usual ability to put its rider at ease. Honda's trademark: when you get on a CBR, you immediately feel at home.
