presentation of the ZX-6RR 600 2003
until now, the ZX line(6, 9 and 12 R) has relied on versatility - but Kawa has decided to go back to the raw, the radical. the proof is in the new ZX-6R: a racing machine with turn signals. The only concession to the road is a 636 cm3 version (introduced on the previous generation ZX-6R), to preserve a minimum of torque and ease of use. First contact with the machine shows that theold ZX-6R is indeed getting on in years. Despite an identical wheelbase, the new model appears more compact, taller and slimmer. The height is an optical illusion, due to the new design. On the other hand, the seat height has increased by 5 mm, the straps have been moved under the fork crown and the bubble is shorter. As for the engine, the first surprise is that it has become very hollow at low revs. Where the old one pulled nicely from 4,000 rpm, the new one doesn't wake up until 7,000 rpm. Gone are the days of protection and comfort. From now on, the 600 Ninja is all about racing! But progress is good: at last, the fuel tap has disappeared, to be replaced by an automatic reserve switch and roller trips. The dashboard is ultra-modern, but the rev counter could be easier to read.
back to the mill. Once up to speed, it undergoes a metamorphosis: frankly weak below 7,000 rpm, it finally snaps to life and pushes on shamelessly from 9,500 rpm. However, it's only between 13,000 and 15,000 rpm that it really takes off like a fury. Gear ratios have been moved closer together for greater efficiency on the track. The new chassis is a marvel of stability, with a front end as precise and sure-footed as that of other current supersport models. The ZX-6RR is easy to corner, predictable, but also a little smoother than its predecessor. The new fork (now inverted) is extraordinarily stiff. This allows you to take full advantage of the power and feel of the new radial-mount brake calipers. The new ZX-6RR has become a weapon on the track, losing the charm of its versatility that set it apart from other supersports. But it's now formidable.

We never tire of looking at it and its engine ... a myth, a monster, a cargne !!! Hollow at low revs, so what?!!! It grunts at 6/7000 rpm, the airbox plays its raucous part at 9000 rpm and the rev counter (what can I say about the speedometer!!!) seems to go wild!!! All that's left to do is lick the (overpowered) brakes, avoid feeling the forks crush as they're so hard to adjust, downshift and start again... the kind of bike you buy when you're young and never manage to resell: every time you ride it, the enchanted merry-go-round kicks in, and it's with bliss and a banana on your lip that you lovingly put it away, wondering if one day, similar sensations (visual, olfactory and physical) will be possible on another bike... knowing full well that they won't...
