presentation of the CBF 900 HORNET 2004
The 600 set the ball rolling, and the 900 follows suit. It uses the same sytlically enticing recipe. High-mounted exhausts flush with the rear hull, large fuel tank and sporty heart.
In terms of looks, it's virile, and very pleasing for street-bike enthusiasts. Mechanically, it's no less than the 4-cylinder of the 900 CBR (model 98) that's installed in this "mono-backbone" frame. A mill full of watts, reworked to increase torque in the mid-range. A few jerks on the throttle change tarnish the picture, without calling into question the full health of the boiler. It's as supple as you want it to be, and accepts to be gently led into sixth gear to cruise like a tourist. A few turns of the throttle, and it pushes hard across the rev counter. Linear in its acceleration, the block nevertheless imposes a certain restraint on the first gears. With the power it delivers, you'll soon be taking the front wheel on a tour of the skies. It spins, it twirls, and the Hornet 900 comes out of the bend like a beautiful devil. Unfortunately, the chassis has a little trouble keeping up with the engine's enthusiasm. The frame (of the same type as the 600) has been strengthened, but the suspension can't cope with the bike's behavior. Overly supple, they fall apart on bumpy roads, while the frame makes a face when riding hard. The slightly understeering front end becomes too light for sporty riding. The mill's great potential can't be fully exploited, even though it itches with every turn of the right wrist.
High speed -> high vigilance required. Clearly, the 900 is not for chicks. This lack of rigor aside, the Honda is rather pleasant to ride, with a smooth, precise gearbox and remarkable braking (from Fireblade 96). The riding position has evolved from that of the 600: less leaning, closer to the handlebars, but also slightly higher.
While the price is right, the Hornet 900 has a bad temper. Primarily intended for black jackets, it's seductive in its plasticity, and won't play tricks on you when you're riding sensibly. Just because you've got a hypersport engine doesn't mean you've got to ride like a calu...

What a treat! It's unbelievably smooth and has just the right amount of power, even when limited to 106 HP. What's most surprising is its docile character, which makes it usable at all times!
