presentation of the ZX-6R 636 2002
So why 636 cm3? it doesn't fit into any category. What's more, it's impossible to enter the machine in a Supersport championship ( 600 cm3 max allowed on 4-cylinders). And above all, what's the point?
Kawasaki's idea is actually quite ingenious. Let's start by reassuring riders: the 600 is not disappearing. The 2 machines will cohabit - one for competition use, the other for more versatile use.
"Versatile?!? But the ZX-6R already is..." For a sports bike, it's true. The green one is already one of the most powerful and user-friendly 600s on the market. This 636 version is intended to offer an ounce of extra torque and power in less extreme use. Most track bike owners spend 95% of their miles on the road. So we might as well offer a fuller model. Besides, it's not that complicated for Kawa to do. No need to create a new engine; just increase the bore by 2 mm. The current block makes it possible to trim the edges of the cylinders, something the competition can't do on the R6 or CBR 600. It was even technically possible to go up to 680 cm3, an audacity the greens didn't attempt. Maybe next time...
We'll skip the bridled version, as there's virtually no difference. But if you unleash the whole herd, the scenery is never the same. The first surge up the revs is made with good will and a pleasantly raucous soundtrack. In the mid-range, up to 10,000 rpm, the engine offers more generous acceleration. Handy for overtaking without revving up the mill. But where the difference is most obvious is after the 5-figure mark. Handle in the corner - The ZX-600R pushes copiously from 10 to 12,000 and then goes off like a bomb up to 14,000, as if a mini-turbo had kicked in. On the 636, this boost effect seems to be regulated, while the boiler spits out watts without restraint from 10 to 14,000 rpm. The 280-meter mark was a slight effort for the 600, almost a formality for the 636.
There's nothing to reproach this block for, as it refines the Ninja without losing any of its qualities. Very respectable protection, reasonable riding position, top-notch chassis combining agility, liveliness and stability. just 2 or 3 minor adjustments and it's ready for the track. The ZX-6R never ceases to please. It's a shame the market isn't so enthusiastic. And yet, it deserves to be.

Unbridled with carburettor caps, but still with the original pot, as I don't like to bother my neighbors.
So with 118 HP, what a pleasure, between lightness and power ideally distributed due to its cubic capacity, a weight distribution bordering on perfection and a natural position, which you can't find on today's midsize sportbikes, as if all buyers of 600 sportbikes were circuit racers, which perhaps explains why more and more buyers are turning away from them in favor of roadsters. Where have all the sportbikes with their beautiful endurance paintwork gone, which made us all dream, well, I digress...
For my 21st bike, I think I've found the right grale, mine at least... To my fellow bikers and bon route ✌ to you all... Rating : 5/5 Respond to Marc
A lively engine, which even with a bridle works hard for a 600. Unbridled, it never falters right up to the red zone.
The only unresolved problem is the front disc cover for heavy brakers.
I've done a bit of track work with it, and it doesn't rust when compared with the latest 600s. Rating : 5/5 Respond to antonio67
