presentation of the 250 SX-F 2014
the 250 SX-F has been the benchmark in the MX2 World Championship for many years, and has won the Mattighofen-based company five world championship titles in a row. The most recent of these was Jeffrey Herlings' 2012 world championship title with the 250 SX-F, so it's only natural that he should renew his faith in the best bike on the market for the 2013 season. For 2014, this spirited four-stroke features engine and chassis upgrades; a performance powerhouse that's sure to continue dominating the MX2 class.
fRAME
The SX models' modern frame design in lightweight, high-strength chromium-molybdenum steel tubing combines maximum longitudinal rigidity with optimum torsional rigidity. This not only ensures good handling and precise steering, but also excellent riding stability.
sUSPENDING ARM
The cast aluminum swingarm has been designed using state-of-the-art calculation and simulation software; the design and wall thickness ensure minimum weight for optimum strength and a perfectly defined flex. For the 2014 model year, engineers have improved the chain guide and its attachment points on the swingarm for greater reliability and reduced weight.
sUSPENSION / DAMPING
Both the rear shock absorber and the 48 mm inverted fork from WP Suspension guarantee optimum damping behavior and responsiveness. For the 2014 model year, the telescopic fork boasts optimized adjustment and greater reserves against shock loads. Fork rebound and compression can be quickly adjusted to the needs of the rider and the track. The rear shock absorber also offers High-Speed and Low-Speed compression damping.
fORK TIPS
High-quality CNC-milled fork tees have been standard equipment at KTM for years. They ensure precise handling and clearly emphasize the flex characteristics and therefore the responsiveness of the telescopic fork.
eXHAUST
FIM noise limits are a huge challenge for motocross manufacturers, and KTM goes to great lengths to meet them. In fact, the 2014 250 SX-F is equipped with hydroformed parts and an additional resonance chamber (Header Resonator System HRS) to deliver superior torque while reducing noise.
eNGINE
The 250 SX-F is your best ally when it comes to podium finishes in hotly contested motocross competitions, as demonstrated by its numerous world championship titles. For the 2014 model year, KTM engineers have equipped the engine with a lighter gearbox with five speeds instead of six. The combination of compact engine design and unbeatable power once again make the 250 SX-F a future contender for victories.
sTART
The 250 SX-F engine is equipped with an electric starter as standard. This represents an undisputed advantage in the heat of competitive racing, even if it means a slight increase in weight. The 2014 model year features a new, stronger starter freewheel.
cOOLING
KTM's tried-and-tested integrated cooling system guides coolant from the cylinder head through the frame triangle to the WP aluminum radiator. Fewer hoses facilitate radiator installation and improve airflow under the tank.
cULASSE
The heart of the compact DOHC engine is the ultra-modern cylinder head with two overhead camshafts and DLC-coated rocker arms: a design that enables engine speeds of up to 14,000 rpm. Optimized flow channels and ultra-light titanium valves (32.5 mm intake, 26.5 mm exhaust) ensure maximum gas flow and top performance.
pISTONS
Forged pistons in Box-in-Box construction boast a super-strong structure while keeping weight to a minimum. Thanks to their low moving mass, the engine is particularly dynamic.
eMBIELLAGE
the connecting rod assembly of the 250 SX-F features a plain bearing in the lower connecting rod eye. Two pressed bearings are directly connected to the crank pin. This construction is an essential prerequisite for the very high revs and unbeatable peak performance of the 250 cm3 engine. It also benefits the engine's durability, extending the service intervals for the connecting rod: saving time and money for the customer.
bALANCING SHAFT
To balance the masses, the 250 SX-F engine features a multifunction balancer shaft that simultaneously drives the timing chain and the water pump. For the 2014 model year, the engine is fitted with a new water pump cover and gasket to optimize sealing.
gEARBOX
The 250 SX-F's 2014 model-year engine features a new, highly precise gearbox that facilitates gear changes. As the number of gears has been reduced from six to five, the new gearbox is 250 grams lighter than last year's.
cLUTCH
The highly compact CSS (Coil Spring Steel) clutch features a wear-resistant steel bell and eight highly heat-resistant lined discs made of steel. Brembo's hydraulically actuated clutch with new clutch cover ensures easy, controllable modulation.
eNGINE MANAGEMENT SYSTEM (EMS)
Keihin's Engine Management System with electronic fuel injection, 44 mm throttle valves and the revolutionary injector position developed by KTM, ensures spontaneous response and maximum engine performance. The 250 SX-F's wiring harness has been further simplified for the 2014 model year, and the quality of cables and connectors improved. Many connectors are now protected against pressurized steam jets by new rubber grommets. In addition, the Map-Select-Switch available in the PowerPart catalog enables different motor characteristics to be selected via the EMS. In addition, an optional User-Setting-Tool lets you use a laptop to access motorcycle data and modify ignition and fuel injection mapping with just a few clicks.
wHEELS
Lightweight CNC-machined hubs, top-of-the-range Excel rims and black-coated spokes with lightweight aluminum nipples ensure minimum weight and maximum stability. Pirelli Scorpion MX Mid Soft 32 tires offer perfect grip and excellent performance.
bRAKES
High-tech Brembo brakes have long been standard on KTM off-road bikes, with lightweight Wave disc brakes for optimum braking performance. For the 2014 model year, we note a new brake cocotte with a new compensation reservoir, a smaller piston diameter, and a new lever with optimized kinematics. Thanks to this and the optimized brake pads, front brake performance and dosability have been further significantly improved.
bODYWORK
The aim was to create a more ergonomic and functional fairing, so that every detail of the bike is in perfect harmony with the rider. The plastic mouldings of the front mudguard are a model of solidity thanks to their sophisticated structure and fastening.
sADDLE
The perfectly ergonomic saddle of the 2014 model year features an improved foam core for greater comfort and sturdiness.
aIR BOX
The airbox design ensures optimum protection of the air filter from dirt, and maximum air flow for enhanced performance. Changing the Twin Air filter in just a few seconds and without tools has long been standard at KTM.
fUEL TANK
All SX models are equipped with a new 7.5-liter fuel tank made of lightweight polyethylene.the inner thread of the lid and the lid itself have been modified, making it easier and more reliable to close. Four-stroke motocross bikes feature the same fuel pump system as four-stroke enduro models, allowing the optional installation of larger tanks available in the PowerParts catalog or on enduro models.
gUIDON
All SX models are equipped with super-strong Renthal Fatbar 827 tapered handlebars, shaped to meet motocross requirements. The tried-and-tested KTM system allows the handlebars to be fixed in a choice of four positions. For 2014, a large black/silver Renthal Crash Pad provides additional impact protection for the rider.
gRAPHICS
A refined new graphic design with clear lines underlines the uncompromising demands of this modern off-road bike.
