presentation of the 250 EXC-F 2014

For years, the 250 EXC-F has been the benchmark in the E1 World Championship, and last year it led Antoine Meo to the World Championship title. For 2014, this feisty four-stroke is equipped with an all-new DOHC engine, which differs from its predecessor above all in its significantly higher torque. The new drivetrain, optimized frame and new fairing make the 250 EXC?F model year 2014 more than ever the winner's bike that will redefine the standards in its class.

eMBIELLAGE

The bodywork of the new 250 EXC?F is more than 5% heavier for optimum traction. Like last season's KTM SX-F models, it features a plain bearing in the lower connecting rod. The old needle bearing is replaced by two pressed bushes which are directly connected to the connecting rod crankpin. The engine's pressure lubrication system provides the oil supply. This design benefits the motor's durability and extends the service intervals for the connecting rod: saving time and money for the customer.

mOTOR HOUSING

A completely redesigned crankcase, now manufactured using the die-casting process, enables a significant reduction in wall thickness compared with a die-cast crankcase. A new, highly resistant aluminum alloy ensures the crankcase's resistance to stone chips and other damage.

bALANCING SHAFT

To balance the masses, the new 250 EXC?F engine now also incorporates a multifunction balance shaft that simultaneously drives the timing chain and water pump.

nEW ENGINE

The 250 EXC?F is your best ally when it comes to podium finishes in hotly contested enduros, as demonstrated by its numerous world championship titles. For the 2014 model year, KTM engineers have gone to the next level with the development of an all-new, ultra-modern DOHC engine that combines all our motorsport know-how. In terms of construction, the new generation shares many similar parts with the proven 350 EXC?F drivetrain. The result is a clear increase in torque, particularly at low and medium engine speeds (up 4 Nm between 6,000 and 7,000 rpm).

cYLINDER

The heart of the new DOHC engine is the new cylinder head with dual overhead camshafts and DLC-coated rocker arms. Compared to last year's model, larger, flow-optimized channels combined with larger intake valves guarantee almost 10% greater gas flow, and thus significantly improved performance. The new camshafts have been improved over last year's model to achieve a clear increase in torque and offer enduro-targeted engine characteristics. The engine's optimized water jacket ensures better heat dissipation.

sTART

The new 250 EXC-F engine can be started by either the kick or an electric starter. The electric starter is well protected behind the cylinder and connected to the improved ignition rotor freewheel via the electric starter drive in the ignition housing. The starter freewheel has been optimized for greater robustness and reliability.

dDS CLUTCH

The new 250 EXC-F is now equipped with a proven and further optimized DDS (Damped Diaphragm Steel) clutch with wear-resistant housing and spring washer. The one-piece housing is milled from high-strength steel, together with the timing gear. This process guarantees unrivalled reliability, and the compact, rivet-free design of the clutch housing results in a very slim motor. This design also allows the use of thinner steel plates, which also contribute to the clutch's compact dimensions. The spring washer provides additional hub damping: an invaluable advantage in terms of traction and gearbox wear. An optimized drive dog also enhances the clutch's robustness. Finally, the Brembo hydraulically actuated clutch and spring washer ensure easy, controllable progressiveness.

gEARBOX

The new 6-speed enduro gearbox, specially developed for the 250 EXC?F, features slightly shorter ratios than before for 4th, 5th and 6th gears. Gear change. The new gearbox stands out for its precision and ease of shifting. The secondary transmission has been adapted to the new gearbox.

eNGINE MANAGEMENT SYSTEM (EMS)

Keihin's EMS engine management system with electronic fuel injection and 42 mm butterflies ensures spontaneous responsiveness and maximum engine performance. A 196 W oil-cooled generator provides sufficient power for fuel injection, lighting and other consumers. A new electronic control unit (ECU) enables even faster and more secure data processing. The Map-Select-Switch available in the PowerPart catalog enables different engine characteristics to be selected via the EMS. A User-Setting-Tool, also available as an option, lets you use a laptop to access motorcycle data and modify ignition and fuel injection mapping with just a few clicks.

wHEELS

Lightweight CNC-machined hubs, top-of-the-range Excel rims and black-coated spokes with lightweight aluminum nipples ensure minimum weight and maximum stability. Maxxis enduro tires have been specially developed for KTM, offering perfect grip and excellent performance.

bRAKES

High-tech Brembo brakes have long been standard on KTM off-road bikes, with lightweight Wave disc brakes for optimum braking performance. For the 2014 model year, we note a new brake cocotte with a new compensation reservoir, a smaller piston diameter and a new lever with optimized kinematics. Thanks to this and sintered brake pads (Toyo B169), front brake performance and dosability have been further significantly improved.

bODYWORK

Spoiler, airbox cover, front mudguard, front mask and headlight were restyled for the 2014 model. The aim was to create a new, more ergonomic and functional fairing, so that every detail of the bike is in perfect harmony with the rider. But other aspects were also taken into account. For example, the designers removed the ribs on the inside of the new front mudguard, to prevent any accumulation of mud. Even so, the new mudguard, with its cleverly chosen shapes and improved fastening system on the lower fork crown, is up to 50% stronger than the previous model.

sADDLE

The saddle incorporates an improved foam core for more resistant padding.

aIR BOX

The new airbox design ensures optimum protection of the air filter from dirt, and maximum airflow for enhanced performance. The new airbox covers are manufactured using a two-component process, with new "Inmould" graphics. The fastenings and mounting of the left-hand cover have been further improved to allow even faster replacement of the Twin Air filter, which is securely fastened thanks to an optimized system. As always with KTM, filter replacement is tool-free. Two additional tabs on the cover also allow it to be secured with screws. The 250 EXC?F is equipped with a new suction line for enhanced performance.

fUEL TANK

The lightweight polyethylene fuel tank incorporates a fuel pump and pressure regulator. The bayonet-type tank lid features an optimized snap-open mechanism for easier, faster opening.

gUIDON

All EXC models are equipped with extremely sturdy Neken tapered handlebars made from solid aluminum alloy. The proven KTM system allows the handlebars to be fixed in a choice of four positions. The 2014 model features new handguards in robust bi-component plastic for more effective hand protection. The new Brembo clutch cover has been adapted to the look of the brake cover.

gRAPHICS

A refined new graphic design with clear lines underlines the uncompromising demands of this modern off-road motorcycle.

fRAME

The modern frame design in lightweight, high-strength chrome-molybdenum tubular sections combines precise longitudinal rigidity with maximum torsional rigidity. This not only ensures good handling and precise steering, but also excellent riding stability. The new frame of the 250 EXC?F model year 2014 boasts thinner-walled, even lighter tubes. Engine mountings on the cylinder head have been optimized and the frame adapted to the new engine. It is now identical to the frame of the 350 EXC?F. The new frame not only shines in its new colors, but also clearly sets new standards in terms of weight and stability. The location of the steering lock and the adjustment of the new headlight have also been improved.

sINGLE ARM

The cast aluminum swingarm has been designed using state-of-the-art calculation and simulation software; the design and wall thickness ensure minimum weight for optimum strength and a perfectly defined flex. For the 2014 model year, engineers have improved the chain guide for greater reliability and reduced weight.

sUSPENSION / DAMPING

Enduro-targeted settings optimized for certain models ensure maximum grip and comfort. Fork rebound and compression can be quickly adjusted to suit rider and track. The rear shock absorber also features separate High-Speed and Low-Speed settings. Chassis adjustment on the 250 EXC?F is now identical to that of the 350 EXC?F.

fORK TIPS

The lower fork crown has been modified for optimum attachment of the new front mudguard. Thanks to its new shape and the use of two screws from the front and two from the bottom, the new mudguard is much more robust.

eXHAUST

The EXC models' sturdy, lightweight aluminum mufflers are renowned for their excellent performance, with low noise levels well below FIM limits. The 250 EXC?F model year 2014 features an exhaust adapted to its new engine, with a new manifold and a double-cone perforated-tube silencer for reduced noise and improved performance.
