presentation of the 450 SX-F 2015
the 450 SX-F is a KTM designed to win; it draws its potential from a large-displacement engine and a perfectly matched chassis. For the official KTM factory team, the 450 SX-F is the first choice for the AMA championship. Not surprisingly, the compact SOHC engine with its innovative injection technology delivers raw but easily controllable power. The 450 SX-F stands out from other big 4-strokes in terms of performance and handling. It's ideal for motocross enthusiasts who want plenty of torque and power, but still want good handling.
wheels
When it comes to wheels, the 2015 version features black-coated Excel rims with lightweight CNC-machined hubs and spokes with light aluminum nipples, to guarantee maximum stability for minimum weight. The new Dunlop Geomax MX 52 tires have been designed in collaboration with the KTM USA factory team and offer optimum traction and top performance. The new crowns save a further 50 grams on unsprung weight.
brakes
High-tech Brembo brakes have long been standard on KTM off-road bikes, with lightweight Wave disc brakes for optimum braking performance. Best-in-class motocross brakes, they remain unchanged on this 2015 version.
engine
The compact 60 hp power concentrate with overhead camshaft and all-new electronic fuel injection features unrivalled performance and even more efficient power delivery. On the 2015 version, new oil screen seals ensure greater resistance even under extreme conditions, as well as greater durability.
electric starter
Like all KTM 4-stroke bikes, the 450 SX-F starts at the touch of a button. It's especially in the heat of motocross action that the electric starter becomes an invaluable advantage.
cylinder head
In the 450 SX-F's cylinder head, an overhead camshaft drives four ultra-light titanium valves via the extremely robust, DLC-coated rocker arm on the intake side. This configuration allows engine speeds in excess of 11,500 rpm and contributes significantly to the unique performance of KTM's large-displacement engine.
piston
The 95 mm-bore cylinder houses an extremely lightweight forged piston with a box-in-box design; its light weight is a major contributor to the engine's low vibration level and high revs. Compression ratio is 12.6:1.
bodywork
The connecting rod assembly of the 450 SX-F, with 63.4 mm stroke, features a plain bearing in the bottom of the connecting rod eye. Two pressed bushes are connected directly to the crank pin. The engine's pressure lubrication system supplies the bearing with oil. This construction is an essential prerequisite for the high engine speeds and impressive peak performance of the 450 SX-F. Another decisive advantage for customers is the longer service intervals for the connecting rod thanks to the plain bearing.
balancer shaft
The side-mounted balancer shaft also serves as a drive for the water pump. Thanks to perfect mass balancing and the engine's low moving masses, it has been possible to limit vibrations even at maximum engine speeds.
clutch
The 450 SX-F engine is equipped with a DDS (Damped Diaphragm Steel) clutch developed by KTM, featuring a wear-resistant steel bell and extremely heat-resistant friction surfaces. A special feature of this design is the use of a spring washer instead of the usual spiral springs, which significantly reduces the force required. The spring washer leaves space for the integrated damping hub: an advantage in terms of grip and durability. Brembo's hydraulically actuated clutch ensures easy, controllable modulation.
gearbox
The 450 SX-F engine features a lightweight 4-speed gearbox specially adapted to the characteristics of this large-displacement engine. For the US market, the 450 SX-F is equipped with a 5-speed gearbox, which is slightly heavier but better adapted to the requirements of American customers.
engine Management System (EMS)
Keihin's Engine Management System (EMS), with electronic fuel injection, 44 mm throttle valves and the revolutionary injector position developed by KTM, ensures spontaneous response and maximum engine performance. Many wiring harness connectors are now protected against steam by rubber sheaths. The Map-Select-Switch available in the PowerPart catalog also enables various engine characteristics to be selected via the EMS. In addition, a User-Setting-Tool, also available as an option, lets you use a laptop to access motorcycle data and modify ignition and fuel injection mapping with just a few clicks.
frame
The modern frame design of SX models in lightweight, high-strength chromium-molybdenum steel tubing combines maximum longitudinal rigidity with optimum torsional rigidity. On the new 2015 SX frame, a forged and milled cross tube connects the two halves of the frame and the idler mechanism's pull rod. The absence of welds ensures extremely precise manufacturing tolerances and enhanced safety, while saving 60 grams in weight.
return mechanism / shock absorber
Revamped for the 2015 model year, the shock absorber features a new return mechanism with optimized geometry. A more linear progression with a higher starting rate ensures greater stability while lowering the rear end. What's more, this new design saves a further 40 grams. Fully adjustable, the WP 5018 shock absorber has been perfectly optimized for this new geometry.
fork tees
High-quality CNC-milled fork crowns have been part of KTM's standard equipment for many years. They ensure precise handling and clearly underline the bending characteristics and therefore the responsiveness of the telescopic fork. The new O-ring support for the lower fork head bearing, a redesigned tube and a new steering head bolt save a further 40 grams.
fork
Fully adjustable, WP Suspension's inverted fork has been perfectly matched to the rear shock absorber and the new 22 mm front axle (up from 26 mm) for the 2015 model year. The new axle provides better front-wheel feel, while also reducing weight by a further 40 grams. The new front wheel axle mountings have an offset of only 33 mm instead of 35 mm, providing greater stability with a higher caster angle. They also include new fork protectors that are 50 grams lighter.
graphics
A new, more stylish deco kit with clear lines underlines the uncompromising demands of this modern off-road bike.
fairing
The aim of KTM designers was to create a more ergonomic and functional fairing, so that every detail of the bike is in perfect harmony with the rider. The plastic mouldings of the front mudguard are a model of solidity thanks to their sophisticated structure and fastening.
saddle
Perfectly ergonomic, the saddle features a tough foam core for enhanced comfort and strength.
air box
The airbox design ensures optimum protection of the air filter from dirt, and maximum air flow for enhanced performance. Changing the Twin Air filter in just a few seconds and without tools has long been standard at KTM.
handlebars
All SX models are equipped with super-strong Renthal Fatbar 827 tapered handlebars, shaped to meet motocross requirements. The proven KTM system allows the handlebars to be fixed in a choice of four positions. The 2015 model has been fitted with softer bi-component grips to protect the rider's hands.
