presentation of the 450 SX-F 2013
a completely redesigned, significantly lighter engine with a pioneering injection system guarantees raw but controllable power. Surrounded by a greatly improved chassis in terms of fairings, frame and suspension, the 2013 KTM 450 SX?F sets new benchmarks in the 450 four-stroke class in terms of handling and performance.
engine
Less weight, less maintenance. But because some things can't be reduced, the 449.3 cm³ (27.418 cu in) SOHC SX-F engine gives the 2013 model a big advantage: more power. Take away the 2 kilos saved thanks to a more compact architecture, and add the 60 hp for incomparable power and handling never before seen in the MX1 class.
cylinder head
Precision technology: a reconfigured cylinder head for ideal motocross characteristics and a very wide rpm range. Extremely compact and lightweight architecture, with a single camshaft specially designed for the KTM SX-F and lightweight rocker arms (DLC-coated on the intake side) controlling four titanium valves. With extra-light valve springs and spring cups, maximum revs of up to 11,500 1/min can be achieved for optimum power.
crankcase
The connecting rod assembly of the new KTM 450 SX-F with 63.4 mm (2.496 in) stroke features a revolutionary sliding bearing at the bottom of the connecting rod eye for 2013. This means that the conventional needle bearing is replaced by 2 bushes pressed into the ultra-light Pankl connecting rod, directly connected to the reinforced crank pin. The plain bearing is directly supplied with oil by the compressed oil circuit via the connecting rod. In other words: no more rev-limit problems, and half the crankcase maintenance. And since the moving masses are reduced, the bike has more bite, is more agile and more dynamic.
frame
A state-of-the-art frame design in lightweight, high-strength chromium-molybdenum profiled tubing ensures the perfect blend of longitudinal and torsional rigidity. This not only ensures good handling and precise steering, but also excellent riding stability. The four-stroke frames on the 2013 models feature a stiffer frame triangle and thinner-walled tubes. This improves stability (increased torsional strength) while reducing weight. Optimization also focused on the engine-head mountings and their connection to the frame. The frames of the 2013 KTM 450 SX-F have a new color and remain a benchmark in terms of weight and stability.
fork
The 48 mm (1.89 in) inverted fork with closed cartridge has been further improved with a fully optimized setup and a new oil specification for perfect harmonization with the new frames and engines. The new oil is much more resistant to wear, and guarantees more consistent damping over both the stroke and life cycle. The new lower triple clamp is 80 g (2.82 oz) lighter, and like the upper triple clamp, it has been CNC milled from high-quality cNC-milled from high-grade aluminum to significantly improve the fork's damping and response characteristics.
swingarm
The cast aluminum swingarm was designed using state-of-the-art calculation and simulation software; the design and wall thickness ensure minimum weight for optimum strength and sufficient flex. For the 2013 models, engineers have modified the design of the rear swingarm to fit a more robust rear wheel axle (25 mm (0.98 in) instead of 20 mm (0.79 in)) for improved handling. A weight reduction of over 100 g (3.53 oz) was also achieved by modifying the steering pins, cups and nuts.
clutch
The new KTM SX-F engine incorporates a damped DDS (Damped Diaphragm Steel) clutch with a wear-resistant steel bell, allowing the use of thinner steel plates for minimum integration width. Elastic washers for preloading reduce operating forces and leave space for integrated hub damping. The result: more traction and a gearbox with less stress. And with Brembo's hydraulically actuated clutch, the rider has everything under control right from the start.
electric starter
Every millisecond counts when starting. That's why the new KTM 450 SX-F can be started at the touch of a button. An invaluable advantage in the heat of motocross action.
bodywork
The completely redesigned fairing makes it clear - and not just from an aesthetic point of view - that the 2013 model represents a completely new generation of SX. In particular, the ergonomics and functionality of the new plastics are designed so that the chassis and engine as a whole form a whole, down to the smallest detail, in perfect harmony with the rider. The fuel tank and deflectors have been given a new look, as have the airbox and front mudguard covers, including the plate. The front mudguard, for example, no longer has any ribs on the inside to prevent mud accumulation. This innovative structure, combined with improved attachment of the mudguard to the fork crown, increases lateral torsional strength by up to 50%.
