presentation of the 650 Calibro 2025
Italian brands and custom bikes have a chequered history. Some are famous, like the Guzzi California and, to a lesser extent, the Bellagio. Some are more confidential(Aprilia 125 Classic). Others quite muscular and exclusive(Ducati XDiavel or Headbanger). But Italy can't be said to be fertile ground in this field. And yet, Moto Morini has entered the segment with this new 650 Calibro.
As you'll have gathered, this is no big Harley-style cruiser or MGX-21-style tourer. Instead, the Calibro is aiming to make its mark in the small-gallopers segment, like the 650 Vulcan S or the Honda 500 Rebel. The Morini's lines are inspired by the latter.
Rather pretty and a bit of a rogue, it also plays on charm with its beautiful red color and its gently sloping stern à la dolce vita.
Morini had given in to the siren calls of custom motorcycling in the late '80s with the 350 / 500 Excalibur and the 350 New York, both very chopper-like. The brand's revival in this segment can therefore be described as a revival, albeit with Asian-sounding powertrains. The engine used is the 649 cm3 in-line twin (close to the Kawasaki block) found in the X-Cape and Seiemmezzo. Rated at 69 hp and 7 mkg, its profile has been revised for greater roundness at mid-range. The use of a belt drive instead of a chain should bring a little more flexibility and avoid dirtying the rear rim with grease splashes. The manufacturer has also thought about young licence holders, as the machine will be A2-rated.
The Calibro has its own steel frame, as does the swingarm. As is customary in this segment, Morini has fitted wide wheels for maximum show-off. 130/70 - 18 at the front and 180 / 70 - 16 at the rear. Agility will suffer, but that's not the priority for this type of machine. Users will be more interested in the very low seat height, just 725 mm off the ground. The frame also features two anchor points for footrests, so that the rider can choose between a cruising or classic profile.
Weighing in at 200 kilos, the 650 Calibro is a classic in its segment, midway between Kawasaki's Vulcan and Honda's CMX. It features a 41 mm fork, a 320 mm front brake disc with a dual-piston caliper, a 255 mm rear disc with a single piston to push the brake pads, J.Juan shoes, Bosch ABS, twin side shocks, LED headlights with circular daytime running light signature and an analog speedo.
