presentation of the 600 GSX-R 2012
with this generation, the 600 GSX-R isn't planning to shock the world with its design. Especially in profile, where you'll need a more than trained eye to make out the differences with the old model. Admittedly, the fairing panels have been revised, the exhaust has been refined, and the rear shell is slimmer; but this chapter is closer to relifting than renewal. Just enough to bring the styling closer to that of the 2009 GSX-R 1000. It's no coincidence: Shigeru Uchiyama, the father of big Gex design, took the helm to revisit the 600 and 750, so there are a host of similarities, especially in the fork head pierced by those double forced-air channels. As a result, with its large superimposed headlights and singular mouths, the Suzuki sports bike changes personality, but the styling, in my opinion, becomes less sporty - it's closer to a GSX-F than a bleeding-edge sports bike. The new bodywork is one of the most significant contributors to the weight reduction achieved by this new generation GSX-R: 3.4 kilos less. And that's just the beginning.
9 kilos... It's lost 9 kilos. That's huge, especially in this class. The swingarm is 900g lighter, the redesigned frame 1,350g lighter, and the exhaust system 1,700g lighter. Visually, there's very little change. The only eye-catching features are the brake calipers. The traditional Tokico calipers have been replaced by Brembo calipers. The little Gex is equipped with monobloc brake shoes, a first for a sports bike of this displacement (normally, this type of technology is reserved for prestigious hypersports models). In addition to improving braking bite (which can only be at its best with braided hoses), these clamps also save weight: 405g. The Japanese rear caliper also loses weight: 325g for the Nissin.
Work on the engine offers little additional power. The 4-cylinder has really only been optimized for its revs. Pistons are stronger and 78 grams lighter, camshafts are meaner and valves are imperceptibly lighter. In terms of gross figures, this represents a gain of 1 horsepower, taking the stable to 126 horses.
the gearbox benefits from a new staggered ratio: longer first gear and the next 5 gears tightened.
the 600 GSX-R adopts 3-position adjustable footpegs, longer rear indicators, a redesigned front mudguard, and a revised swingarm with a banana-style right side. The fork is now a large-piston BPF model (860g lighter and more efficient), the S-DMS (several mappings, now reduced to 2 selections) is still part of the package, and the instrument panel has been radically changed to be more closely inspired by that of the 1000. In terms of geometry, the wheelbase has been reduced by 25 mm and the overall length by 10 mm. All rear suspension components have been slimmed by 780g. The rims are also 550g lighter and the crown 150g.
all these changes do not radically alter the philosophy of the little Gex, which remains one of the least radical and therefore most enjoyable sports bikes on the road. With the technical improvements listed, agility and increased efficiency are clearly in evidence. However, even with all this, it's hard for it to compete on the racetrack with thoroughbred racers. But for civilian use, the 600 GSX-R is certainly one of the most appropriate choices.
