presentation of the Daytona Moto2 765 Edition limitée 2020
Affected like so many others by the decline of the sports car market, the Triumph Daytona slowly faded into the background a few years ago. It was the last of a line that included the 900 Super III and the 955i T595. She had fallen asleep under the roar of her 675 cm3 engine... Only to return through the front door, crowned by the song of the Moto2s and a 3-cylinder 765 cm3. The Daytona left a lasting impression on the hearts of sportsmen and racing drivers. Triumph saw and heard the wishes, and gave a new existence to its renowned SuperSport.
Riding theold Daytona 675, you could smell the arsouille and the trajectories. The British car didn't pretend, and put you directly in touch with the sport. It's a character trait that the 765 is set to take up with far greater force. Powered by the 3-legged Street Triple, itself adapted to the demands of Moto2, the Dayto is sure to get the adrenalin pumping. Disappointing though, is the claimed power output of this distiller: even when doped to conform to the pistarde, it develops 130 hp at 12,250 rpm - the 675 already produced 128 hp. Standards must have severely restricted the potency of the connecting rods... Fortunately, we've gained torque, with a maximum of 8.2 mkg. It's even 20% more present in the mid-range than on the 675. The Italians are sure to chuckle when they realize that an MV-Agusta F3 800, barely more cubed (33 cm3 more), spits out almost 20 extra horsepower... For those who want to go even further, the XX version had 160 horsepower.
Although this block is derived from the Street RS, it is set apart by a number of welcome improvements for a sports bike: titanium intake valves, meaner ACT cams, modified connecting rods, reinforced pistons, DLC-coated stud pins, revised intake, increased compression ratio and optimized gear ratios.

The chassis features lightened wheels and Öhlins and Brembo (Stylema) components, anchored to an aluminum perimeter frame. The Daytona's styling is identical to that of the 2013-2016 model, where refinement and lightness are combined in a fairing and a series of carbon elements. A modernized face would have been welcome, but... Triumph was cautious.
Focused on itself, the Dayto retains its reduced size. Only the exhaust seems cramped - the space under the engine is no longer sufficient for it, and it takes up a more classic sideways position. The Arrow muffler is just waiting to let out the Moto2 melody. Weight remains under wraps. However, according to the information provided, we can expect the weight to be in the region of 180 kilos.
On the other hand, as time and technology have not remained dormant since its retirement, the Daytona is equipped with a number of new electronic features. ABS, traction control, IMU inertial unit, 5 riding modes (Rain - Road - Rider - Sport - Track) and Up&Down shifter are all included. The instrument panel is updated with a color TFT screen, as on the Street R and RS.
Triumph is determined to make this rebirth a small event. Regretted by many when it was evicted from the catalog, the Daytona returned with panache to open the 2019 Silverstone GP. Those lucky enough to be on hand were treated to an exhibition of two models on the track, driven by two former world champions. The price is quite steep, much higher than the Daytona 675 R. Symbolic detail: note the last 3 digits of the advertised price... ;-)
So, will we only see these 765 examples? If it's a premium production like the TFC Thruxton and Rocket III TFC, we can only hope that a more affordable version will follow some time later.
