Yamaha is making a comeback in the trail segment with the same spirit and pretensions as before. The 700 Ténéré is more about crumpling sand than smoothing asphalt. With it, destinations range from galloping trails to warm scents. Much lighter than the maxi-trailers on the market, powered by the MT-07's CP2 twin, both tall and slim, it makes no pretense of rally-raid affiliation. If a questioner whispers, "We're leaving!?!", she'll whisper, "We should have left by now! Depending on where you are, you may need some equipment. Yamaha has planned a pack to assert the Rally side and another to lean towards the raid with the Explorer endowment here.
When you're on the other side of the stone walls, or in the shelter of a few redwoods, you'll appreciate a piece of sausage, a lamp, some water and the essentials for the ends of the globe. All this, the 700 Ténéré can fit into a pair of aluminum suitcases. 35 liters on one side, 37 on the other. The brackets for attaching them are included in the Explorer package, as is the passenger seat, sacrificed in favor of a transport rack. Ideal for a large bag, a sleeping jackal or a crate of victuals.
Aware that the adventure will take on its full meaning if the rider practises it with conviction, the "little" Ténéré gets a higher-calibre boot, generously dimensioned and 1/3 thicker than the standard one. Crashbars also protect the engine and sidewalls. Last but not least, a central stand facilitates routine and unscheduled maintenance - greasing the chain, changing the wheel, unbolting, etc...
With all this equipment, you'll have to reckon with a dozen extra kilos to move. The bill is a little heavier: 1,941 euros to transform the Ténéré into an authentic off-roader, which is a minimal customer benefit compared to the price of the accessories taken separately.

Otherwise, a good, smooth, well-balanced bike. It will take you anywhere on asphalt, or even on good roads. For off-road riding, it will be tricky to take the 200kg up small vineyard paths and turn around, unless you have a solid enduro background..
I bought myself the lowering kit, connecting rods and low seat. It's better, but still high. Saddle comfort seems okay, but it's still winter and I haven't ridden 300 km in one go yet..
