presentation of the Tracer 9 2022
With its high-slung eyes, dripping cheeks, flushed confidence, renewed vitality in the face of rough roads, mischievousness in every turn of the wheel - the Tracer wants to grab hold of everything. Tracer 9 to be precise. A small change of name for this crossover for a big technical evolution?
More than that. It's truly a new motorcycle. From 900 Tracer to Tracer 9, so much has changed that only the concept remains. So yes, its shape allows us to identify it almost immediately, while the design plays with detours. The rest of its existence is a new life for this third generation.
There ' s no denying it, the Tracer needed a major facelift. Want.... Or need? The new visual personality justifies this with a homogeneity of a different kind. The scalpel of design sometimes stigmatizes straight, perhaps hesitantly in certain areas like the appendages ejected from the tank to the underside of the seat. Is this part finished?
Its look and forehead have become more independent. This is followed by R1-style headlights hidden in the lips of the fairing. The Tracer 9 denies the 900, but can't deny the pride of being just like it, only better.
Rediscover its frame. A brand-new element for the Tracer 9, which, as in its early days, is shared with the MT-09. Since the latter has renewed everything, both muscle and skeleton, its cousin (inbred?) is doing the same. Still in aluminum, the backbone is lighter, stiffer and more compact, and its main muscle, the 3-leg, is fixed by Tracer-specific brackets. It has also been straightened by a few degrees to improve front-end feel and motricity. The latter will be further enhanced by a new swingarm 6 cm longer, without any increase in wheelbase.

Well, not completely. The master cylinder control is now in radial format, as on the R1. The feel is better and more consistent.
Agility ? A key point of the Tracer, which some have perceived as nervous, others as restless. As for its looks, it's ready to move on, as evidenced by the 700g lighter SpinForged rims, also borrowed from the MT-09. After that, it's up to the damping to keep up, engine fever included. Yam has therefore redesigned the suspension and installed a 30 mm shorter fork - a model that has been re-sized to fit the new frame. At the rear, the system is assembled differently.
A little work on the hydraulics would have been appreciated. Fortunately, the fork is fully adjustable to improve its performance. The amorto's only adjustment is preload.
But, good news, the Tracer 9 finally gets tires worthy of its level, namely Bridgestone T32s designed for it. The gumshoes + the new frame + the 1,500 mm wheelbase + the long swingarm should ensure that the Tracer 9 is as efficient as possible, without losing any of its fun.
Especially since there's a choice piece between the aluminum beams. The ebullient CP3 engine gets a promotion. We've known it to be powerful, fiery, jovial and demonstrative in each of the models in which its 847 cm3 engine was used. Suffice it to say that the new version is going to kick ass. with 3 mm more stroke for each of the 3 cylinders, the 889 cm3 is ready for battle. The gain in power isn't huge: 4 hp. That still gives a total of 119 horsepower in the boiler. On top of this, the new block adds torque and puts it to work sooner. The 9.5 mkg (7% gain) are reached at 7,000 rpm, 1,500 revolutions less than on the previous 900 Tracer. as a bonus, it loses 1.7 kilos on the scales and is 9% more frugal. More range in sight.
That's a shame. The bronze finish on certain elements is no longer welcome. What would be welcome, however, is a clog or something to hide the exhaust line, which has become a rather indigestible intestine. No choice but to fit the catalytic converters.

No, she wants two. There's no question of doing what everyone else is doing, with a larger or smaller screen. On board, a pair of 3.5" TFT screens perfectly separate the display, while offering a singular vision of the instrumentation.
On the left is the same display as on the new MT-09. The TCS and D-Mode displays have been reversed, but everything else is identical. On the port side, the rider can read the revs, speed, gear, fuel level and other information. In short, everything you need to know when you're on the road. By entering the menus, you can also calibrate the steering assistants.
The right-hand side is reserved for less 'essential' information. This is where you'll find trip kilometers, temperatures, cruise control settings and other info. It's a shame, though, as this would be a perfect place to display a GPS, especially if it could duplicate the screen of a smartphone.
After all, the Tracer has never been afraid of the open road. Only the saddles didn't see it as well. Rolling up its sleeves and taking advantage of the machine's complete overhaul, the manufacturer has greatly improved overall ergonomics. For a start, the saddles are more inviting. The seat is 15 mm lower and can be adjusted to two different heights without the need for tools, the footrests can be positioned 15 mm up or down, and the handlebars can be adjusted by reversing the clamps, moving them 9 mm forwards and 4 mm upwards - before you even set off, you'll appreciate these gestures of civility.
Protection is the other winner. The windscreen has been further enlarged, with height adjustment in steps of 5 mm up to 50 mm. Knees should benefit from the deviations generated by the fairing sides.
On a positive note, the big Tracer retains some appreciable assets. The center stand, an 18-liter fuel tank, a 12V socket, good passenger grips, and anchoring points for suitcases. These are brand-new models, eclipsing the Touring and City versions. Their support is a "floating" suspension system to reduce the disruptive effects of luggage movements. In all, the Tracer 9 can carry 193 kilos on its back, 7% more than before.

Yesterday's Tracer came with ABS, traction control and 3 injection maps. For the 9, the dowry is on a whole new level:
- Its D-Mode now features 4 maps. 1 for the sportiest, 2 for everyday use and versatility, 3 for cool riding, 4 when it floats.
- New Ride-by-wire throttle.
- Cruise control added as standard. Activated from 50 km/h and adjustable in 2 km/h increments via a knob on the left-hand commodo.
- Addition of an IMU inertial unit, smaller and lighter than that of the R1. It informs the riding aids of multiple motorcycle dynamics parameters
- TCS traction control is more responsive thanks to the IMU. With 3 adjustment positions.
- Added 3-stage slip control (SCS) for maximum stability. Can be deactivated.
- Addition of 3-level LIFt wheeling control, to more or less calm front-wheel flight. Can be deactivated.
- Addition of BC brake control. This system modulates circuit pressure in two modes. BC1 is the standard ABS mode. BC2 intervenes in braking power in delicate situations indicated by the IMU. Like braking too hard in a curve.
Let me come back for a moment to all the modules that manage the rear wheel. To simplify things, Yamaha has "grouped" them into 3 modes. With 1, they're all at level 1, so you don't have to work too hard and leave the sport to the rider. In 2, everyone goes to setting 2; logical. More suited to standard riding.
Things get complicated with 3. Well, not exactly. It's just that here, everything is parameterized and you have access to 48 possible combinations. There's plenty for setting enthusiasts to do.

Metamorphosed and highly modernized, the Tracer 9, on the other hand, is less affordable. The price has risen to 11,500 baht, almost 1,000 baht more than the previous generation. Let's not look too far back, when the first MT-09 Tracer was priced at just under 10,000 euros.
A GT version accompanies it once again, with all-new pretensions. As with the second generation, it boasts more equipment, such as standard panniers, Up&Down shifter, heated grips, and new features that are rare at this level of the range: cornering lights and semi-active suspension. The confrontation with an F 900 XR packed with options promises to be tough.
You can tell it loves the road more. We can see that it has big ambitions. We appreciate the fact that it still plays as hard as ever to move the cursor between touring and sport. However, the larger handguards augur better coverage and tip the balance towards the former... while the adoption of a sport brake chamber counters the latter. The Yamaha Tracer 9 continues to play the double game, and we love it.
