in the mid-size segment, there's been nothing to get excited about since 2005. BMW's roadsters since then have been nothing but big, or even skinny. Between the horsepower-packed K 1200 R and the classy R 1200 R (replacement for the R 1150 R), the Munich-based manufacturer's roadster offering was thin on the ground. That's changed with the arrival of the new F 800 R, the Naked version of the F 800 S / ST tandem. A very youthful machine for the brand, with the famous Chris Pfeiffer as its ambassador (and almost creator). But to enter one of the most turbulent (and juicy) markets in motorcycle production, you need to be well armed...

on a physical level, it's hard to remain indifferent or to be ecstatic. Admittedly, it's not in the Street-fighter category, but its very Germanic profile doesn't make you want to laugh. The headlight, taken from the recent 800 GS, gives it a strange look, and the inspiration from the K 1300 R can be glimpsed, but what really bothers us is the abandonment of the single-arm and belt drive for a classic swingarm with chain drive. A real shame.

technically speaking, and apart from the small apostrophe above, Beheme's "middle" roadster is far more interesting. Engine-wise, the twin 800 is a real crowd-pleaser. This engine, first used on the S BMW F 800 R 2009and ST roadsters (recently tested by Oli the Belgian), has a distinctive profile: its cylinders are inclined at 30°, and the 360° offset engine architecture produces a noise very similar to the Boxer engines of the big BM range. Technologically, the engineers have done their homework: semi-dry sump lubrication, K 1300 mill-inspired cylinder head, dual-throttle injection with innovative fuel flow regulation system, refined engine reengine tuning, a new exhaust system with repositioned catalytic converter and curt muffler, and a re-staggered gearbox with shortened final 3 gears. With its sportier positioning, it's a good idea to use a tighter gear ratio, and make the most of the twin-cylinder's 87 horsepower.

chassis-wise, the R borrows elements from its siblings. Namely, an aluminum perimeter frame where the engine acts as a swingarm mount, thanks to a reinforced housing in the rear section to anchor the swingarm. The telescopic fork is more classic. BMW doesn't often take risks with its medium-displacement models - so a Duolever fork, as found on the K 1300 R, was virtually impossible. But let's not be too intransigent... The F 800 R does come with Brembo brakes, 320 mm dual discs and 4-piston calipers, brake lines, sporty rims and optional ABS.
BMW F 800 R 2009This new BMW roadster also adopts THE brand's revolution, also present on the new 2009 models (K 1300 S, R, and GT): the new turn signal control. For decades, the Bavarian controls for each indicator were separate and located on either side of the handlebars. No more! BMW has adopted the standard Japanese format, with a single switch on the left-hand side. The seat is slightly lower than on the F 800 S, and can still be lowered as an option. Well, everything is optional at BM. The list below gives you all the possible customizations and accessories on offer - a vertiginous wallet guaranteed.

to further convince young people that this is the model for them, the F 800 R can be kitted out with 34 hp. Except that 21-year-olds don't necessarily have the potential to spend 8,000 euros on a bike, even for the propeller-driven model. At this price, the Behemoth can't compete with the Japanese bikes in the segment, but finds itself in direct competition with the Triumph 675 Street Triple and the Ducati 696 Monster. The F 800 R will be available in alpine white/black, fiery orange or aluminum white... and maybe one day a Chris Pfeiffer Replica version, as we saw at the Milan show ->.

Spanish Nogafe Model 2010
After 15 years and 119,000 km, I'm still in love with this bike. For my taste, I still don't see a bike on the market as versatile as this one. Although I've sometimes considered changing it, I've never found a worthy replacement. For the time being, we continue to ride together. Apart from a few problems with the fork seals, I can say I've had no problems at all. Rating : 5/5

Former owner of the 990 Super Duke, then 7 years off, I'm starting again with the 2010 F800R.
It's ugly, but what a fun machine.
Cross France and spend a week in the Pyrenees as a duo. It's surely the ultimate weapon, even with all its luggage.
I wanted something easy to get back on and I had a lot of fun.
To replace it, I'll probably go for the f900 XR or the cube in XR. Nice discovery.

French Model 2009
I've been riding a 2009 F800R for 3 years now, and every time I get on it, it's the same pleasure. Easy to handle, spirited and supple, it's a pleasure to ride on winding roads, country roads or freeways. As a duo, it's just as easy to handle as a solo model, with room for both passengers. Be careful, however, not to overuse the front brake at low speeds and when cornering... the Sinergie could play tricks on you! I'd recommend it to beginners, or to any rider who wants to reduce the weight of his bike (200kg for the 800R). The F800R is guaranteed fun! Rating : 5/5
Très bonne moto, mais perfectible
French Ornyal Model 2010
I rode it for over a year and 15,000 kilometers.

Positive points :
- fairly torquey for a mid-size;
- not too powerful for beginners;
- very sturdy and reliable (small drops don't scare it, and it starts right up, even after a few nights outside at -10°C);
- excellent braking;
- a good tourer, although it's not a 1200RT, but frankly, with the two suitcases, I was able to swallow up kilometers without a care in the world;
- ideal for a duo, with a generous, comfortable passenger seat;
- good range / reasonable fuel consumption.

Minus :
- perfectible chassis. A more precise chassis and firmer suspension are needed for a more aggressive driving style;
- rather lame noise (at least with the original exhaust), but at least it's discreet
- a little low (but I was still comfortable despite my 90 cm frame).

After 1 year, and more than 11,000km on it, it's a superb bike. Crossed France from north to south without a care, national roads, freeways very reliable. Tested with the winding roads of the Dordogne, handles like a bike.
Emergency braking is very safe with the abs, it doesn't move. It's also very stable in wet conditions.
What's more, it's a welcome change from the classic Japanese bikes

Bought my F800R in July, the twin-cylinder gives a very acceptable power, the 4 1st long gears are very pleasant, the road holding is top I strongly recommend it for the duo, the sound of the pot is very pleasant during deceleration, the twin gives a little more vibration than a 4 but in speed stabilized, is forgotten ... good appreciation in general ... I took this little bike for a test ride. I prefer it to the triumph speed tripple, the 800 is more fun to ride despite having less horsepower than the speed. After an hour of testing, I'd buy it, but I'm hesitating with the R1200R. One thing's for sure: it's a big change from Japanese bikes. The ride is different, 2 different styles - the Japanese roasters push more at the start, of course, but the 800 or 1200 have something extra. Rating : 5/5

i've tried this bike three times in different regions,small,light,easy to handle,good braking,efficient,it's really great.the only drawback for me is that I'd like it with higher handlebars and protection because it gets very tiring very quickly in road use.so bmw,think of the backpacker who wants to be protected for long trips,thank you!
