presentation of the 996 SPS 1999
in motorcycle production, the 996 is a machine in a class of its own, sumptuous, physical and characterful. This SPS version is the culmination of this - in fact, it's almost a racing machine. The big twin-injector V-twin develops 123 horsepower. And Ducati horses need to be held tighter than any other. The camshafts are different, with a more incisive profile, the gearbox benefits from a "competition" gear ratio, the brakes are signed Brembo (floating cast-iron discs), and the suspension is hyper-efficient; the rear unit is an Öhlins. This helps to justify the poisonous price tag (150,000 frs), and with carbon in every corner, it looks a little better. All this is forgotten as you gallop along. With the 996 SPS, it's pure bliss: the big Desmo twin pushes hard with the rage of destructive torque, and the intense, pleasurable vibrations of Italian mechanics. The chassis, true to Ducati, is beyond reproach. With all this, the SPS is one of the best sports bikes around. A machine of desire and pleasure for discerning and wealthy riders. But do dreams come at a price?

what a machine! not for its power, but for its character. A blistering sound that slams into your ears once you've passed 8000rpm, a hoarse, low-pitched squeal coming from its guts, and impressive engine braking that makes accelerating as much fun as decelerating. The most brutal desmoquattro I've ever driven, after trying out a slightly hollow 748 and a smoother 916 strada
What's impressive is to have a character like 900 ss between 6,000 and 8,000 rpm, with 50 hp suddenly coming from behind, and then it's on!
The original narrow 190 rims accentuate the bulging profile of the tires, so cornering can be impressive! and it holds up. it fits perfectly with the ohlins, even though it's 10 years old
a machine that's good enough for the average person
a character you can't get enough of!
