presentation of the 1690 ROAD GLIDE SPECIAL 2015
It's true that the Road Glide has been present on the French market for some time, but mainly under the guise of the CVO version. Apart from this confidential release, it had been a good ten years since the Road Glide had left the Harley France range. Project Rushmore blew this Touring back across the Atlantic in 2015. And not just any Touring: in the USA, it's available in two versions, standard and over-equipped. Guess which one is coming to our roads? The 1690 Road Glide Special.
why Special? Because of the carefully added equipment. Starting with the BOOM Box 6.5 GT multimedia console, the very best Harley has to offer, with GPS, 6.5-inch touchscreen, Bluetooth, USB, 25 watts per channel, voice recognition system, etc... Enough to keep you entertained should you feel the urge to listen to something other than Twin Cam 103 ci. And yet, isn't it partly this engine that guided you in your choice?! On the Road Glide, the chosen version is High Output Optimization. With a revised camshaft and airbox, the 1690 pushes out 5% extra torque. Not too much to keep this 400-kilo machine cruising. For such a beast, and with such personality, perhaps the liquid solution of the innovative (for the Harley world) Twin Cooled would have been more appropriate and rewarding. For the next evolution or another vintage?
let's not get ahead of ourselves: the developments linked to the Rushmore project are already here. The experience of all to benefit the Harleys of tomorrow. The brakes benefit from ABS and the Reflex coupled system. The 300 mm discs, bitten by 4-piston calipers, are monitored for safety.
The Road Glide's look has changed somewhat. Normal, its eyes are new, much more efficient Daymaker LED headlights. The brand says it loud and clear in figures: 85% wider and 6% more power in low beam, 35% wider and 45% more power in high beam. But what you'll appreciate most is the optimization of the top fairing, the famous Shark Nose. Subtly reworked after numerous wind tunnel and road tests, it now features a triple vent to equalize pressure in front of and behind the windscreen. As a result, the rider can cut through the air with a quietude unknown on a Harley, while enjoying a new riding position. The handlebars move the grips 22 cm closer to the rider.
Comfort also comes in the form of more easily adjustable rear air suspension, "One-touch" luggage opening, cruise control, improved instrument readability and new, more ergonomic controls. Braking is entrusted to a strong team: ABS, Reflex coupled braking, 2 x 300 mm discs at the front and one at the rear, all backed up by 4-piston calipers
for its return to the "mainstream" H-D Touring clan, the Road Glide does things right, with aplomb, serenity, assurance and class. It's confident, and so is Harley-Davidson. Doesn't the MoCo lightly proclaim "Serez-vous à la hauteur"?
