presentation of the BT 1100 BULLDOG 2003
make no mistake! The Bulldog isn't mean. The name is perhaps evocative, and the bike's lines follow the same trend. The BT 1100 looks good, and its double-beam frame gives pride of place to the big twin... derived from the 1100 dragstar. With 65 hp and 230 kg dry weight, it's clear that the Bulldog doesn't play with roadster fighters like the Hornet 900, Speed Triple or 900 monster. Still, the twin delivers 9 mkg of torque. Yamaha doesn't present it as a "streetfighter", but as a machine for distilling "riding pleasure". So, let's take a stroll, adopting a leisurely pace, without getting carried away by the thrill of the ride, but rather by the serenity of hazelnut-scented trails. Not very generous in terms of vibrations, the mill takes the crew along without fuss. The machine makes up for this in comfort and roadholding. The rider is delighted with the driving position - and the passenger isn't too shabby either. The finish is meticulous, and the presence of a universal joint will delight those who shy away from a can of grease (and the "fun" cleaning of the rear wheel). Thanks to its displacement, the Bulldog offers vigorous acceleration, but we're still left wanting more, as the machine's plastic appearance promises more aggressiveness. An atypical machine, the Bulldog is a cross between two families: XJR forks, R1 brakes, Dragstar twin and XJ 900 driveshaft... the combination doesn't make it a thoroughbred. But for those who like a machine that looks good and allows for bucolic, recreational riding. The price isn't an advantage: not so far from an XJR 1300 or a monster 800 - otherwise more demonstrative.

Bikers' reviews Leave a review - 32 reviews
My belated opinion on this bike, but I'm sure there are still bikers interested in the beast, and they're right
I owned 1 of them for 1 year. A 2003 model
It's a beautiful bike, made to have fun on the road!
The name is very very badly chosen ... although ... thinking about it ... a bulldog, it's muscular but not fast right?
In any case, don't think of it as a thunderbolt, that's not the bike's philosophy at all
65 hp. That's not much, is it? Well, it's more than enough for another cushy ride
I guarantee that your riding style will adapt to the bike, not the other way around. I found myself riding with a smile on my face, at (almost) regulation speeds. No hustle, no adrenalin, just FUN
A super bike with sound handling and good braking
In short, apart from its heavy weight (at least 95% metal), the bike is really perfect for its intended purpose: pleasure riding
Watch out for the starter freewheel, which is its weak point (at least for my version, the S1), otherwise... what more can you say?
Give it a try, it's important in any case, but if you're in the right mood (quiet cruising) then know that it's waiting for you and won't disappoint

For those looking for a motorcycle with character that won't go unnoticed, this is the one.
The Bulldog is a bit of a failure in itself: it didn't sell well, it was too expensive, and its performance was too poor for its time.
Even now, when you think "65hp", you see an ER6, but certainly not a big beast with two big bowls and 1.1L displacement.
I've been riding one in all conditions for 1 year now. It's seen the cold, the frost, the rain, the wind, the sand, the salt, the mud... Not always very clean, that's for sure, but I know she'll start up every morning with certainty.
You don't have to press the starter button for 2 seconds, it always starts in 1/4 turn. The big bowls come to life with a husky, low, muffled sound.
Only by revving up beyond 3-4,000 rpm does this machine roar, literally.
Once the first gear is engaged, with the chunky "chklonk\" typical of old Yamaha gearboxes, you're carried along, forgetting all about its weight of almost 250kg with full tanks. You ride at low revs, twisting the handle a little from time to time to load up the engine and enjoy its custom purr.
We soon reach mid-range, where we feel a little kick, where its torque is at its peak. And that's why we love this bike: for its imposing torque despite its weight.
And it's when you arrive among other bikers that you're proud to ride this machine of mixed success. There aren't many of them on the road, its look is perfectly atypical and you'll find yourself puffing your chest out at the handlebars of this machine that few people know about and that still attracts so much attention.
It's a no-questions-asked ride. Maintenance is reduced to an absolute minimum. There's no profusion of plastic, the finish is impeccable, and parts don't rust.
After a while, you'll regret its lack of power and extension, compensated for by its imposing torque. We also regret the somewhat muffled sound of its exhaust, which we'd have liked to be more expressive and furious. And perhaps the small digital odometer is a little out of place next to the beauty of the car.
But if you like to ride for the sake of riding, in all weathers, without worrying about the technical vagaries of which it is exempt, over 14 years without a breakdown (the freewheel having been changed preventively), you'll love the machine and forgive its faults. Rating : 5/5 Respond to MoYoX
After owning several machines, including one of the very first Yam 650 Special and a Honda CB1000 known as the Big One, I've been the proud owner of a Bulldog for over 15 years, probably being one of the first to acquire this bike in January 2002, just after it was put on the market.
Aside from the aluminium finish of the commodo covers, which have oxidized over time, and the fork sleeves, as well as the blistered paint on the bubble/headlight support, a few rust spots here and there, and the seat, which I've had redone, this is a great bike with a beautiful finish, which I still enjoy riding and which I'm going to keep for a long... very long time.
I'm not particularly conservative, but I feel in harmony with this bike, which I try to look after well, just as I do with my Toy Land Cruiser, which I've owned for 14 years and which is also in near-new condition.
Bulldoggingly yours.

A real pleasure to drive on torque.
I've lost just one point since then.
I'm a big mono fan, and I've found the torque available at low revs and the ease of use.
I recommend the experience. Rating : 4/5 Respond to Kinou60
Beware, however, of the starter's freewheel, which is this bike's weak point. This requires a special starting procedure, using the manual choke at full throttle and a clutch stroke without any acceleration, then repositioning the idle at 1000 rpm.
This is a known manufacturing defect at Yamaha, who some time ago supplied a free kit to replace the freewheel in the event of its failure, although you have to dismantle the engine to access it, and the cost in labor is quite high.
The battery must always be fully charged, so a permanent charger is a must if you don't ride every day.
The parking light eats up the battery in 2 hours, so be careful when turning the key to turn it off.
A comfort saddle is also to be recommended, as the original one isn't great.
And if you're going out on the road, a windscreen is a must, as the wind resistance is quite substantial above 100km/h.
Despite all this, it's an excellent bike, cheap to buy second-hand, and really very reliable (no breakdowns in 3 years and 24,000km), average fuel consumption: 6L/100km.
Front and rear pilot road 4: a real pleasure!
Ideal for those who like to devour kilometers.

A really nice bike, with the right amount of torque.
It's an endearing bike, which gives good sensations, which, my goodness, allows me to have some "d'arsouillesilles" moments, with a healthy chassis...
A "son" like few others... magnificent.
It's a bike where there's life.
Don't rely on technical data alone...
Efficiency isn't just about numbers...
A bike that unites a great bunch of 2-wheeled enthusiasts...

I don't think you can say that a motorcycle is a good or bad machine...it's very subjective and depends on what you're looking for. All bikes are good if they correspond to what you want.
Regarding the BT, if you're looking for a thunderbolt, go for a ducat, a Z 1000 or a street triple...if you're looking for a rocket, get an Ayabusa... but be careful with your license, your life and the lives of others! (unless you're going to a racetrack). On the other hand, if you're looking for a reliable, low-maintenance, well-finished motorcycle that's great fun to ride on any road trip thanks to its excellent torque, a bike that's good enough for a series of fast turns or safe overtaking, then get a BT and you won't be disappointed! For me, of course, it's a good bike, since it's what I'm looking for, and at an affordable price. Rating : 4/5 Participate in the conversation

I find this bike very aesthetically accomplished.
In terms of handling and road manners, it's a safe bet. Very good braking quality inherited from the R1, rigid frame, ...
The engine, if we take the Vtwin spirit, i.e. all torque, is very satisfying every day and on long trips.
Great on mountain roads and winding roads...
Low maintenance (cardan shafts, etc.) and decent fuel consumption.
I've been riding it for 4 years and it's nothing but pleasure...
Kind regards

Personally I bought a Bulldog as my first motorcycle. Although I heard a lot of comments about it, I don't have anything to complain about except the paint on the cylinder heads that peels off... I agree about the saddle, which tears very quickly. I myself opted for a personal saddle, and believe me, it gives this little beast a lot of "gueule"!
As for performance, I'm keeping my head up with my bull ..... I admit that it runs out of steam quickly at high revs, but it's got such torque to boot! No need for the 1st, the 2sec does the trick lol . Rating : 5/5 Respond to CharlieBro
29000kms with the first new model bike in 32 months and now I have the 2nd with 15OOkms... it's a very good doggie who loves travelling with 2 people and alone. it's a great ride with its many options; and what's more, I don't like any other bike on the market except one day, miraculously, a 700 transalp with a cardan joint. see you soon! Rating : 5/5 Respond to le chien
As for performance, it doesn't take much and you get more than your money's worth..
The GSXR1000 and the 1200Bandit at the Marne-la-Vallée traffic lights must still remember it!!!
Ridiculous fuel consumption: between 4.5 and 5.5 l in normal use
Royal comfort, stunning looks, cardan shafts (once you've tried them, it's hard to go back to an ordinary chain), a boot capable of holding a U, a disc block, a tool kit and a pair of rain pants (go and stuff all that under the saddle of an R1!!!!)
Of course, there are always little things we'd like to correct (weight, 6th gear or more extension...), but it's also because of its little faults that we're so attached to it..
What's more, its rarity allows Bulldog owners to be part of an even closer-knit community!

If you're a thrill-seeker, you should know that with a few small expenses and the right adjustments (2500 revs and around 60Km/h more), it becomes a real beast, truly deserving of its name: the bulldog
i could easily get 8500 € for it, but I love it too much. Rating : 5/5 Respond to djk
Mine goes much further than 200, and in terms of responsiveness, I'm well served
All the faults mentioned by others, I find insignificant and easily solvable
Once you've tasted the intense pleasure of this machine, you don't really want to sell it: I've done everything I could to keep it, and now I'm getting rid of it, for an MT 01. Rating : 5/5 Respond to djk
