presentation of the KX 450 F 2012
the all-new KX450F features the latest "Factory" upgrades for 2012. A host of innovations, including a start management mode never before seen on a production machine, a new electronic control unit with 3 easy-to-set maps, and an adjustable riding position, mean that the KX450F has everything it takes to stay ahead of the pack.
if its predecessor had already distinguished itself in competition through the performance of its engine and the velocity of its chassis, the 2012 KX 450 F features a host of factory-inspired elements that give racing enthusiasts a head start.
among the main evolutions are the "Launch Control" start assist mode - a first for a production crossthe redesigned ECU with three easily-configurable maps, and a saddle position that can be adapted to the rider's size and style.
all the bite of fuel injection
The 449 cm³ liquid-cooled, 4-stroke single-cylinder engine delivers punchy power from low to high revs. The highly exploitable powerband and responsive acceleration deliver a torrent of torque that allows riders to push the throttle right from low revs.
optimized cam profile
By raising valve lift by 0.4 mm, the reprofiled intake cams allow a greater volume of incoming air, a factor that accentuates low- and mid-range performance. At idle, a small portion of the intake air is sent to the bypass circuit (main duct 3: bypass 7 >> main duct 6: bypass 4), for improved response to initial throttle opening.
the piston
The piston, identical in design to those on factory machines, enhances performance at all engine speeds. Its short skirt, external reinforcing ribs and internal bridge cap (exclusive to a production machine) with flush internal reinforcement make it lighter and stronger.
On the piston, the redesigned cross-section of the bridge provides an ideal balance of rigidity, enhancing performance at medium and high rpm.
easy engine tuning: direct injection parameters (choice of 3 mappings)
The default settings for the three maps are: Standard, Hard and Soft. using the supplied DFI couplers, the rider can easily switch from one map to another to adapt settings to driving conditions. Simply plug in either of the 4-input couplers to activate the corresponding map. The location of the socket, to the right of the steering column, allows easy access without disassembling any parts.
The optional KX FI fuel injection calibration kit can be used to reprogram all three maps.
precise engine tuning: KX FI injection calibration kit (optional)
The KX FI injection calibration kit is identical to that used by official Kawasaki Teams in Europe and the USA. It allows experienced riders not only to adjust engine settings to their preferences (by modifying the original mapping), but also to record ride data and then analyze it to fine-tune the settings even further.
launch Control mode - how to do the holeshot
The 2012 KX450F features Launch Control, a start-assist system very similar to that used on factory KX models. At the touch of a button, the rider can activate a separate engine map that multiplies the chances of a good race start in slippery conditions: by delaying ignition timing, Launch Control mode allows the rear tire to regain grip in low traction situations, and the rider to concentrate on the trajectory.
transmission
Given the wider power curve, the gearbox has been redesigned to facilitate shifting at high revs, while significantly improving the overall feeling of power.
new frame
Narrower by 4 mm (2 mm on each side) between the main beams, the more ergonomic frame refines the riding position and provides greater control.
front suspension
The Kayaba AOS (Air-Oil-Separate) fork features two separate cartridges for oil and air, ensuring consistent damping quality during extended sessions. Low-friction spigot seals contribute to smoother operation.
The flanges of the lower fork crown open towards the rear rather than to the side, thus increasing rigidity and optimizing fork operation.
The outer surface of the inner fork tubes benefits from an ultradur DLC (Diamond-Like Carbon) treatment that reduces friction (by preventing it from sticking) and thus improves damping and ride quality. This coating retains its effectiveness when the fork is subjected to lateral forces that generally impede sliding, in bends for example. The increased surface hardness makes the tubes less susceptible to scratches and marks.
rear suspension
By using an optional rear suspension link (1 mm longer than normal), riders can lower the seat height by 4 mm (measured from the middle of the seat). Even if 4 mm doesn't seem like much of a difference, on a machine designed for competition, having the possibility of modifying the riding position without interfering with chassis performance proves extremely beneficial.
adjustable handlebars
Two bridge mounting positions and reversible bridges on the top tee offer four handlebar adjustments: 25 mm forward, 15 mm forward, normal and 10 mm rear.
adjustable footrests
Thanks to their adjustable plate, the footrests can be lowered by 5 mm; by lowering the center of gravity and line of vision, this position enhances physical and psychological stability.
shorter muffler
The short muffler (minus 60 mm) refocuses weight and improves manoeuvrability.
front brake
Featuring a new, aggressively styled petal pattern, the fixed front disc reduces unsprung weight by 80g.
